Toxic cargo safety The United Counties of Prescott-Russell supported a resolution from Kingston city council, calling on the provincial government to put into effect new safety measures dealing with transport of hazardous materials on public roads. The resolution, which is going out to all municipalities in Ontario for additional support, recommends that the province forbid transportation of hazardous materials during periods of severe weather. The Kingston resolution resulted from a recent incident, east of that city, when a March blizzard was credited as the cause for a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 401, which also involved a tanker truck with a cargo of fluorsilicic acid, which spilled out. The highway was closed for the day and a Code Orange situation declared at Kingston General Hospital, as staff there dealt with accident victims affected by the toxic spill. – Gregg Chamberlain Glengarry Pioneer Museum On Sunday, May 21, visitors can take in the new exhibits, as well as enjoy a Victorian Tea in the after- noon, and listen to a guest speaker who will delight attendees with tales and photos from the time of Confederation. Those looking for an educational adventure during the upcoming long weekend can pack a picnic and stop by the museum on Saturday, Sunday or Monday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, www.glengarrypioneermuseum.ca or 613-527-5230. – Maxime Myre
Prescott-Russell message for POTUS The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) has a message to pass on to President Donald Trump. The UCPR suggest that the current president of the United States rethink his idea of cancelling fund- ing for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), because this will have a serious impact on the condition of the Great Lakes. UCPR council gave unanimous support, during its April 26 session, to a resolution from Lasalle town council to lobby the provincial and federal governments to contact their counterparts, south of the border, and argue against EPA funding cuts since algal blooms and other aquatic infestations are still a problem in the Great Lakes, and can pose problems for tourism activities like boating, fishing, and swimming, and also affect the water supply for some shoreline communities. Hawkesbury Mayor Jeanne Charlebois urged her fellow mayors on UCPR council to support giving President Trump a message “and letting him know how we feel.” – Gregg Chamberlain Vankleek Hill and District Nature Society The Vankleek Hill and District Nature Society is holding a fundraiser in Vankleek Hill, in front of the Scotia Bank building, on May 18, from 10 a.m. until noon.
