personal evangelism by Benjamin Weiss
T h e r e w a s a p a u s e in the conver sation, then the elder of the two men looked up and said in a puzzled manner, “What do you mean by be ing born again? How is this possi ble?” This was the question expected, the core of the conversation. The words themselves were not puzzling. Birth is one of the most common terms. It was understandable to be bom once, but to be bom “ again” was an entirely new thought. He looked at the Master with a question mark on his face — “bom again?” Yes, bom again — “ Except a man be bom of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is bom of the flesh is flesh, and that which is bom of the Spirit is spirit” (John 3:5, 6). The word “ except” added weight to the statement of the Master. How could this happen? What was the process of being bom again? To any one who has not had the born-again experience this is the most important question he could ask. This birth brings a new kind of life — everlast ing life. How would a person receive this new life? Is it something mysti cal? Yes, it is that and more. It is a person. It is Jesus Christ Himself. Receiving Him is receiving eternal life, is being bom of the Spirit. Je sus said, “ I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me” (John 14:6). This is the way that a person is bom again, by receiving Jesus as His personal Saviour. Is this what being a Christian hing es upon? Yes, it is the beginning of a new life, but it is only the beginning. Without this spiritual experience however, there is no beginning. From this point on it will become whatever a person makes of this life. Paul said, “ I press on . . .” He had purpose and a goal. To him the Christian life was an achievement. He wasn’t just wait ing; he was pressing on. This is all determined by the beginning — the new birth. The possibility for a Chris tian to go on from the moment of be ing bom again is as significant as a little baby in its mother’s arms, de veloping into a person of achievement, power and self reliance. Yes, this is what it means to be bom again into a new family, into a new life, and into a new existence— bom of the Spirit. MARCH, 1962
