School Dress Held A Discipline Factor

Causes for the decrease in enroll ment in theological schools of the United States and Canada during the last five years will be investigated from an office recently opened in Min neapolis, Minnesota. The question is one of several regarding the training of Christian ministers to be researched by the Lilly Endowment Study for Pre-Seminary Education. Two cler gymen, Dr. Keith R. Bridston, execu tive director of the project, and Dr. Dwight W. Culver, Associate director, will conduct the two-year investiga tion under a grant of $85,000 from the endowment. The decline in the number of ministerial candidates was disclosed in a recent survey conducted by the American Association of The ological Schools, one of the study’s sponsors; another is the National As sociation of Biblical Instructors, a group of college professors of religion. Black magic is still a booming busi ness up and down the ancient Nile Valley. When the wife of a runaway peasant seeks his return, she is likely to rely on the magic of a soothsayer. When a poor merchant is stricken with a mysterious illness, he may put more faith in an amulet than in his doctor. Men who seek the love of beautiful girls, old maids still hoping for husbands, men and women seek ing revenge —— these are the Egyp tians who make their way secretly into the dimly-lit rooms of “magi cians” who get substantial fees for uttering or writing gibberish guar anteed to perform the impossible. Or they may travel twenty-five miles out side of Cairo to a dusty, sun-baked village called Aghour Alward, known to many Egyptians as the “ capital” of the magic arts. When the sun goes down, inhabitants of Aghour Alward creep out of their huts and gather around an old man who unfurls a sheet of ancient Egyptian papyrus. This papyrus, they say, contains all the secrets of the magic arts and has been village property ever since it wks found in the ancient Pharaonic tombs. It has been a boon to the vil lage for years —- at 15 cents a head to any Egyptian who seeks Aghour Alward’s secret formulas. Egypt's Magicians Doing Brisk Trade

The once-fashionable “ Sloppy Joe” look is disappearing from high school class rooms in Ottawa, Canada. Stu dent-sponsored “ dress up days,” to gether with an official crack-down on ducktail haircuts, blue jeans and hea vy make-up, are bringing about the change. On dress-up days, held sev eral times each year, boys don ties and jackets, girls wear business clothes and light makeup, and every one makes a special effort to be well- groomed. These special days began in 1956, after J. B. Callan, a city high school principal, advised parents that he was prohibiting students from wearing overly casual clothes to school. Ottawa’s Central Students’ Council picked up the idea and be gan sponsoring the days through its affiliated councils. “ Dress-up days have a good over-all effect,” Mr. Cal lan said in an interview. “We find there is a definite relationship be tween good grooming and good be havior. Discipline problems are cut down when students dress up.” There is no compulsion to participate, but most of the students do, according to Mr. Callan. He said, “You’ll general ly catch a few who forgot about the day, but they’re always plainly em barrassed. Then there’s the rebel who says, ‘this is not for me,’ but the students look after him themselves.” The Communist party chief, Wlady- slaw Gomulka, has asserted that a long, hard road lies ahead in his party’s struggle against religious be liefs in Poland. In a rare interview with a Western news man Gomulka said: “ Religion is deeply rooted in a major part of our population. It is difficult to say how long religious be lief will persist in Poland—-certainly for tens of years and possibly even longer.” The P o l i s h Communist party’s First Secretary made these re marks after the latest public clash between his regime and Poland’s Ro man Catholic Church appeared to have left the church as strong as ever. The controversy flared over the ques tion of religious instruction, elimi nated from Polish schools by govern ment decree last year. Gomulka Expects Long Church Fight
