“ I heard you speaking on the new birth — I don’t know much about it, but I do want to be born again.” Then Gypsy Smith pointed him to the Lord Jesus who died on the cross in his place and stead. After a while, the lad said, “ I think I see it — first you bring yourself to Jesus, then you leave yourself with Jesus and keep going on.” “Yes, that’s it,” said Gypsy Smith, and the lad went away rejoicing in his new-found Saviour. But the next night, the evangelist found him in the inquiry room again, his eyes shining like stars. “Why, sonny,” the Gypsy said, “ I thought you received Jesus as your Saviour last night.” “ I did,” the lad replied. “ Then why are you here tonight?” “ I came to bring my mother.” The next night, he was in the in quiry room a third time. “ Sonny, why are you here again tonight?” “ Oh, I came tonight to bring my grandfather.” Three generations were won for the Lord because a little boy, who found the Lord Jesus as his Saviour, became a personal worker in his own home. “Whosoever shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father which is in heaven” (Matt. 10:32).

Gypsy Smith, the evangelist, told this lovely story at one of his meet ings. He had been speaking at a certain place on the new birth (John 3). At the close of the meeting, the altar call was given. Among those who came forward to believe on the Lord Jesus as Saviour was a young lad of ten. Gypsy Smith watched this boy as he went into the inquiry room.
He remembered that when he came to the Lord, no one seemed to have any interest in him, thinking he was only a poor gypsy boy. So he deter mined that the boy should know that there was someone who cared. Gyp sy Smith went into the inquiry room and knelt by the lad.' “Why are you here, sonny?” the evangelist asked him; and through his tears, the boy said,
little Christian will be a light for God in his or her own way because each of you has a different experience and disposition. There is also a fish called the angelfish. There are two kinds. One kind lives in shallow water and has a beautiful light shining down ,in its throat. The other kind has a strange-looking growth on the top of its nose or on the middle of its face. This growth looks like a little fishing pole. On the end of this rod is a light. It is a very strong light, too. The fish uses this light to catch its food and I’ll tell you how it does it. (Of course, I was not down in the ocean listening and I did not see it, but I think this is what happened.) One of these angelfish went near a ledge of rock and turned its little fishing rod around so that it was in front of its mouth. Then it let the light shine brightly in front of its mouth. It has many very sharp teeth in that mouth and the mouth is very large. In the rocks were the homes of little baby fish. I think their mothers told them not to go out of the yard to play because they might get hurt, but I think those baby fish were like some children about whom I have heard who did not like to obey Mother and felt that she was interfering with their happiness if she would not let them play across the street. - So one night these little baby fish went far from their homes to play hide-and-seek or some other game. They saw this light shining and thought, “What is that?,” They talked about it and decided to go and see what it was. They were a bit afraid, of course, for they had never seen a light like this, but they swam very carefully and MARCH, 1962
very slowly toward the light. They came closer and closer, and the big fish kept watching and watching. He saw them coming but they did not know him because they had never seen him. When all these little baby fish were very near, he jumped and closed his big mouth, which had been wide open, and all the poor baby fish were swallowed. Poor Mother and Daddy Fish never knew where their baby fish went. They wondered what happened to those little ones, but they never knew. The baby fish should have stayed at home as Mother told them, but this bright light attracted them. That is exactly how Satan traps boys and girls. He makes his pleasures look attractive—very attractive. He brightens them with beautiful colors, beautiful music, beautiful pictures, and makes people forget that there is an end of the journey. God says that wise men foresee evil and hide themselves, but the simple pass on and are punished (Proverbs 22:3). You will see many, many things, chil dren, which will be attractive and alluring to you. Per haps business and money-making will fascinate you; possibly social position or pleasure will attract you, but we must learn that these are lights which may lead us to a terrible disaster at the end of the journey. The Lord wants you to be His child. Trust the Lord Jesus who died for you to save you. Be a Christian boy or girl. Then when you go into public life you will be preserved from the terrible disaster that awaits those who despise God and do not want the Saviour. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved (Acts 16:31). 45
