by Arnold D. Ehlert, Th.D. Librarian ond Professor of Library Science, Biola The Diamond Jubilee Story by H. Wilbert Norton, etc. The major histories of the smaller denominations are always significant because they chronicle for all time struggles and developments in the var ious branches of the Christian church which belong to the total history of our country. The story of the so-called free or independent churches is not only fascinating but also meaningful for hundreds of thousands of Chris tians who hold fiercely to the princi ples of local autonomy and freedom of the individual to interpret the Bible for himself under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This book tells the story of the seventy-five years of the Evan gelical Free Church of America. Four of its leaders collaborate in this vol ume. The beginnings go back to 1884 in Boston, with Chicago, Illinois, and Britt, Iowa, the centers of the Midwest development. Scandinavian revivals were the spiritual sources of both this group and the Evangelical Mission Covenant Church. The doctrinal posi tion is toward the middle of the road theologically but on the Arminian side, with a good deal of liberty. Mis sions were vigorously promoted. Many names, of course, dot the pages of this book, which is as it should be. Illustra tions and an index would have greatly enhanced it as a history. 335 pages; cloth, Free Church Publications, Min neapolis; $3.50. The Qumran texts are the Dead Sea Scrolls (from the name of the general area of the caves). Eleven years ago these manuscripts first came to the at tention of the public. Sufficient of them have now been collated and pub lished to provide fascinating material for study by Biblical scholars. Dr. Bruce is a keen student of the ancient Biblical languages and an evangelical Bible scholar. He studies here the method of interpretation that the commentators used in their commen taries. These commentary texts are proving interesting from the textual stand-point as well as the exegetical. He finds a strong tendency to inter pret the Old Testament prophecies in terms of the events transpiring around (Continued on page 34) Biblical Exegesis in the Qum ran Texts by F. F. Bruce
