'Ttecvayiawti. By James O. Henry Chairman, History Department , BIOLA College Bible Reading Marathon Two Long Island Presbyterian churches recently joined forces in a Bible reading marathon that covet ed four days. During that time more than 100 volunteers read both Old and New Testaments from cover to cover. The Rev. Norman W. Minard, pastor of the Selden and Centereach Community Churches, said that the churches were sponsoring the pro gram “ to stimulate interest in Bible- reading and to make the experience meaningful.” The reading continued from the pulpit for more than ninety hours. Many of those who vounteered to read were not members of the participating churches but those who became interested in the program. Mission on Wheels The Episcopal Motorama, a Church information exhibit on wheels de signed to “ roll into the lives and con sciousness” of non-Church people and members alike throughout the United States, was inaugurated recently in Fargo, North Dakota. It began its tour after being dedicated in con nection with the 100th aniversary of the Missionary District of North Dakota. Housed in a renovated city bus, the Motorama display highlights the “his tory, meaning, and nature” of the Episcopal Church and its program in the United States and overseas. In addition, free literature provides fur ther information for interested view ers. Scheduled to tour North Dakota until October, the Motorama will be driven by teams of clergymen-guides, including the Bishop of North Dakota. It will stop at county seats, fairs, and other public events, in areas where the Episcopal Church is established as well as where it is not. After Octo ber, the exhibit will go into other areas. A Wise Decision Two boys, 14 and 15 years old, charged with stealing from shops, were ordered by a magistrate in Can berra, Australia, to attend church at least once a week for the next three years. J. D. Button of the Children’s Court also forbade the boys to go out in the evening for the next eighteen months unless accompanied by a parent.

50-Mile Somersault' An ascetic Indian is accomplishing an unusual penance in Ceylon to gain peace and grace, according to a story appearing in the Tiger Standard, in Singapore. He is somersaulting, and he does not intend to stop until he has covered at least fifty miles. He has already covered thirty-five miles, and natives drop in prayer as he passes by. Rise In Negro Priests Fifty-four American Negroes have been ordained Roman Catholic priests since 1950, it was announced recently by St. Augustine’s Seminary in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The Seminary said, “ This reflects a substantial in crease,” in the number of Negroes being trained for the Roman Catholic priesthood. The Protestant Church in Portugal, according to a recent report, has a history that closely parallels that of Spain through the years of the in quisition and intermittent persecu tions. But unlike Spain today, the Portuguese Protestants suffer no gov ernmental censure. The present Portuguese Constitution insures religious freedom, but the spread of Protestantism within con tinental Portugal has been relatively slow. Today there are about 50,000 Protestants attending services in sixty to eighty churches. Hidden deterrents and tradition are sufficient to keep most of Portugal’s 9,000,000 within the Catholic fold. There are no high Government officials who are Protes tants, and no Protestants have been against losing members through per sonal surveillance. Because at least 35 percent of the Portuguese are illiter ate, and because street meetings are illegal, Protestant missionaries have a difficult task of proselytizing. Portugal Maintains Religious Liberty
