THE POPE'S ANNOUNCEMENT O n e of the most significant announcements to be made thus far during the current year was issued from the Vatican. The first major move on the part of Pope John XXIII was to publish his intention of calling together an ecumenical council, the date of which has not been set as yet. Christians should acquaint themselves with the mean ing and use of the word “ ecumenical,” inasmuch as this term will loom large in the vocabulary of religious leaders in the days and months which lie directly before us. The word “ ecumenical” means worldwide in its extent and influence. The Pope’s announcement, then, is the first step in a strategic project spearheaded by Rome to form a World Church.
