King's Business - 1959-11

not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:27). But in order to understand this peace, we must first see how that peace motivated Christ's own life and ministry. In the first place, His was a life of complete submission to His Father's will. The words He spoke in the Garden of Gethsemane, as the cruel cross loomed upon before Him, expressed the attitude of His heart from eternity to eter nity: "Nevertheless, not my will, but thine, be done." Alas, this is not always the heart purpose of His children! Every time that difficulties rise in a local church and Christians become involved in personal quarrels with each other, it is because someone is not submissive to the will of God, but is endeavoring to exert his own will upon others. James stated it plainly in his epistle: "Where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace" (James 3:16-18). The mind of the Master is not that of contradicion or con fusion. The peace is broken because all are not yielded to the will of their Lord. In order to experience the peace of God, one must manifest the same singleness of purpose which character ized Christ. As a Child in the temple He exclaimed: "Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" And as He announced the aim of His life and redemptive work it was in the words: "Lo, I come to do Thy will, 0 God" (Heb. 10:9). To this holy end He expended every ounce of energy and every moment of His time. And, as a consequence, He knew what the prophet was talking about when he wrote, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee" (Isa. 26:3). Likewise, when our minds, purposes, ambi tions and goals are centered upon the will of God, we too can experience the peace of God which was our heritage from the Saviour as He went to the cross. It follows that in order to enjoy this peace of God, we must exemplify the kind of meekness ("harnessed strength") the Lord Jesus Christ exemplified. There is no room for arrogance, pride and the haughty spirit which is so easily offended. Paul said, "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world," (Gal. 6:14). Personal pride has no place in the Christian's life and service. As John Bunyan put it so well in Pilgrim's-Progress: "He that is down need fear no fall He that is low no pride ; He that is humble ever shall Have God to be his guide." This is the peace that passes understanding. It is the peace which comes from the heart of God to the child of God. May we experience it as we live in a world that says, "Peace, peace" when there is no peace in the hearts of un saved men or between the nations of the world. There will be no peace on earth until the Prince of Peace is here in person, and there will be no peace in human hearts until He is there, as well. "Peace, peace, when there is no peace" (Jer. 6:14).
