festival trials day 25th January

contender for the Sun Racing Stayers’ Hurdle when winning the Grade Two galliardhomes.com Cleeve Hurdle by an impressive 12 lengths. The eye-catching bay gelding is trained by Emma Lavelle (who tasted her first success at Grade 1 level earlier on in the season) and the horse certainly captured the hearts of racing fans as he shone on the sport’s biggest stage. Paisley Park’s owner, Andrew Gemmell, who has been blind since birth, forfeited tickets to the Australian Open tennis to head to Cheltenham for the day. He said: “I can’t believe it – it’s fantastic and has surpassed my expectations. After his first couple of runs, Paisley Park was seriously ill and it was touch and go whether he would survive. He has come back and is just growing into himself.” Lizzie Kelly is no stranger to success in the Cheltenham Winners’ Enclosure and Festival Trials Day was no different. Under a fine ride, Siruh Du Lac completed a hat-trick of Handicap Chase wins when rallying to hold off Janika in an exhilarating finish. Trainer Nick Williams said: “He is a hugely impressive jumper, he always has been, but I didn’t think that we would get back up. It was a huge relief and we have won a few races here by very tight margins.” Irish raider Joseph O’Brien brought over the popular Fakir D’oudairies (J J Slevin) who raced into contention for the JCB Triumph Hurdle at The Festival following his impressive victory

on this day in the JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle. The promising four-year-old bolted home by an impressive 13 lengths and rewarded Joseph with his first official Cheltenham winner as a trainer. The jockey said: “It’s a Grade 2 and we didn’t hang around – we went a nice, even gallop – and my horse travelled very comfortably and jumped very well. He stuck at it very well – I didn’t realise I had won by so far!” The celebrations keep going after racing as Festival Trials Day always rounds off with live music in The Centaur. It’s the last chance for racegoers, trainers, jockeys and owners to enjoy Cheltenham before the excitement of The Festival and everyone is encouraged to make the most of it before they return for the big one in March.
