Two equine names transcend racing: the record-breakingAltior and everyone’s favourite Tiger Roll. Each had a role to play as they shared centre stage on Day Two of The Festival. Boy, did they deliver
AS THE GATES open on Day Two, city girls become country girls as The Jockey Club welcomes tens of thousands of racegoers to add a splash of colour to the Home of Jump Racing. Hailed the Queen Mother of all racedays, the second day of The Festival ™ presented by Magners plays host to the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase and the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase. Among the glamour of racegoers, Day Two in 2019 really got the ball rolling for The Festival as the record crowd were treated to record-breaking performances. The incredible, and seemingly unbeatable Altior stole the headlines, but it was the little tiger with the heart of a lion that captured the nation. Altior, the Nicky Henderson-trained Chasing Champion fought hard to hold onto his Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase Crown under Holland Cooper Leading Jockey Nico De Boinville. The pair were challenged by Sceau Royal (Daryl Jacob) in the familiar silks of Simon Munir and Isaac Souede over the final flight, alongside the Paul
Nicholls-trained Politologue who was running a career best under Harry Cobden, but the nine-year- old bay was just too good for the them as he pulled clear up the famous hill to the delight of the crowd, and equalled the record of Big Buck’s of the most consecutive wins in Jump racing, before going on to break the record at the Sandown Jump Season finale. Described as a “phenomenal athlete” by his pilot, Nico de Boinville, Altior was not his usual foot-perfect self throughout the race. “We had a bit of a miscommunication at the water, when he wanted to go long and I wanted him to pop it and not waste too much energy, we definitely went half-a-length down after the last but he just seemed to find this extra gear. I don’t know where it comes from. He doesn’t know how to lose at the moment and long may it continue.” The extraordinary achievement of Altior was followed up by an unforgettable performance from the household name of Tiger Roll.
