ENVIRONMENTAL

Sustainability and the environment are at the forefront of everyone’s mind at the moment and it is very much a hot topic, including here at Cheltenham MATTERS

Cheltenham’s Green Champions

F or a number of years, continue to get a lot of attention – especially when it comes to straws, but there are now huge expectations for all organisations to do more. As an events venue, we have a number of initiatives and projects in operation including plastic straws and stirrers being banned and biodegradable alternatives being introduced, that can be provided on request. No new stock of plastic straws have been ordered and concessions are banned from using plastic straws. But this is one small step and we have gone further with a project that saw the installation of solar panels on the roof of Cheltenham Racecourse has been striving to do its bit to help reduce the venue’s carbon footprint. Non-reusable plastics

The Centaur auditorium – the biggest venue of its kind between Birmingham and Bournemouth, which is used for everything from gigs to major exhibitions. Having something that size – 2,600m² of space – means that it takes up a lot of power, so using alternative energies is essential. It is not the first time that solar panels have been installed at the racecourse though; the Princess Royal Stand has them, as well as ground source heat pumps. Measures like these go a long way in helping the environment and it is very much part of the racecourse’s corporate social responsibility. Solar panels are part of a much wider effort, and as a business we have to continue to do more. That is why Green Champions have been enlisted to help. These are employees throughout the racecourse who spread the green message

such as through recycling and making sure electricals such as lights and computers are switched off. It may seem like small tasks, but these things all help and add up to less consumption of energy across the site and improve recycling rates. We have recycling bins in public areas with recent annual recycling rates of 73 per cent, and for The Festival ™ , presented by Magners, alone it was about 64 percent and zero waste to landfill since summer 2018, two years ahead of our target. Cheltenham Racecourse will not rest on its laurels and the team are looking at the next steps that we can take to push this further. As a rural business we know the beauty

and value of this planet, so we are passionate about doing our bit to protect it.
