Dear Friends & Family,

Welcome to New Dances/ New Choreographers. A performance showcasing the Junior Repertory Company Dancers, the pre- professional company of the School at DW. This year’s theme is Around Again . Each year the students and I sit down and discuss what their pieces are about and what is relevant in their lives. Each piece is unique in its own right but the common thread and ideas they kept returning to were: cycles, time, connectivity, patterns and growth. As artists we invite you to witness each dance and allow these concepts to connect to your own life. We can’t wait to hear what you saw and how the show impacted you. The student choreographers start the process of creating this show every fall by taking a choreography class where they learn tools and techniques to create dances and cultivate their ideas. In January, they audition their peers and begin to create and translate movement vocabulary to their classmates. As their pieces come to life, we see collaboration, decision making, community and young artists asking themselves what is important to them and how they can present their ideas through movement.

Choreographers participated in all the production elements of this show and with support from DW staff work on marketing and funding tasks including staging, costume, music and lighting choices – and all that hard work leads to what you will see tonight. Beyond the student work, this year the JRC students also had the amazing opportunity of working with professional choreographers Nik Owens and Gina Patterson.

Nik and Gina worked with the dancers intensely over a short period of time similar to a

professional working environment. They asked the dancers to move outside their comfort zones and generate some of the movement as well. It is always so amazing to see our dancers step up to plate and dive head first into this experience. The opportunity to create and present their own work as well as working with guest choreographers is truly an incredible opportunity, usually reserved for dancers at the college level. This show means so much to these young dancers and they have poured their hearts and souls into the process. Thank you for being here to witness their artistry. I am so honored to share this evening with you. We hope you enjoy Around Again .

THE SPACE CLEARS

Choreographer Lola Roberts

Dancers Gemma Billimoria, Lottie MacGregor, Edie May, Paschall McDaniel, Avery Taylor, Understudy: Fern Varga

Music “Goodbye Forever” by Evenings Various nature sounds

In my piece I explore the idea of connectivity- of a disjointed community, existing separately and within their own scopes of life. The piece bridges the gaps between each other, finding joy in connectivity, and exploring the whole and relationships with each other and oneself.

FLATLINE

Choreographer Edie May

Dancers Lane Brazell, Zoe Joralemon, Paschall McDaniel, Frances Reid, Kate Ryan Music “Experience” by Ludovico Enaudi, Daniel Hope, I Virtuosi Italiani

This piece is about searching for something that is life, knowing there are people there for you throughout your hardest times, and finding happiness and togetherness even during loss.

Dancer: Edie May

CONFINED IN COMFORT

Choreographer Paschall McDaniel

Dancers Lexy Ankeny, Biz Carlin, Aundra Guttormson, Caroline Korpi, Edie May, Lola Roberts, Kate Ryan, Mairi Schilling Music “Nothing Else Matters” by Apocalyptica Confined in comfort is an exploration of the simultaneity of certain emotions- feeling stuck and being content at the same time; comfortable and safe, but constricted; enticed with the future full of expected freedom, but lost in the inexperience of the present. It is a piece

inspired by ideas circling the fear that stems from constancy. This fear can feel like a sort of cabin fever, but for a way of life, for a place, for a mindset. It’s the itching to get out, but being uncertain of the next thing; it’s feeling a homesickness for a place you’ve never been and yet all the same, feeling scared to lose the person you are now by moving forward.

Dancers: Paschall McDaniel, Kate Ryan

FOR EACH OTHER

Choreographer Kate Ryan

Dancers Gemma Billimoria, Lane Brazell, Zoe Joralemon,

Sadie Mae LaPrade Paschall McDaniel, Understudy: Piper Benjamin

Music “Reload” by Michael Wall

This piece explores when helping others starts to harm ourselves. Having people rely on you for support and comfort can be a heavy weight that pulls you down. Although being there for others is an important part of life and can positively impact the lives of others and ourselves, at what point is it too much?

CITIZEN AND STONES

Choreographer Lane Brazell

Dancers Bella Gutierrez, Caroline Korpi, Sadie Mae LaPrade, Lottie MacGregor, Understudy: Piper Benjamin

Music “The Lemon of Pink I”, “The Lemon of Pink II”, and “Venice” by The Books

This piece explores how to show voices without words. These voices are trapped in routine, and it slowly gets more mundane. Each dancer works together to break the feeling of capture and normality, eventually breaking the cycle!

I LOVE YOU

Choreographers Sadie Mae LaPrade and Lottie MacGregor

Dancers Biz Carlin, Lola Roberts, Understudy: Aundra Guttormson

Music “Helikopter” by Ceeys

Our piece focuses on letting go but always finding ourselves circling back. We are always trying to break away from old habits in our lives but fear of loss brings us back. Even when we are allowed the opportunity to let go , something happens that causes us to return to the same things or people in our lives.

Dancers: Lane Brazell, Sadie Mae LaPrade, Lottie MacGregor

ME AND MY MIRRORS

Choreographer Biz Carlin

Dancers Lexy Ankeny, Piper Benjamin, Gemma Billimoria, Lane Brazell, Bella Gutierrez, Aundra Guttormson Delilah Irby, Zoe Joralemon, Caroline Korpi, Sadie Mae LaPrade, Lottie MacGregor, Edie May, Paschall McDaniel, Frances Reid, Lola Roberts, Kate Ryan, Mairi Schilling, Avery Taylor, Fern Varga

Music “Kirghiz” by Polo & Pan

This piece is about loving what is on both sides of ourselves. During modes of conflict the safest option is to dance in our room. What is so special is that there is no feeling of being alone because everybody else is going through something similar. Dancing together with the people you love makes you feel better.

overload Choreographer Zoe Joralemon Dancers Lane Brazell, Biz Carlin, Bella Gutierrez, Delilah Irby, Edie May, Lola Roberts

Music “Agape” by Nicholas Brittel

As we go through our lives we encounter new people, events, and situations that impact how we continue to live the rest of our lives. This piece explores the idea of the burdens we carry everyday, feeling an onus to hold onto these burdens no matter how little or how small. As humans we often circle around ourselves, we may try to avoid thinking about these burdens, but what is uncovered in this piece is that the only way to get rid of these burdens is to confront them. The poignant feeling presented through our insecurities, regrets, and emotions can become a heavy weight to carry, yet it’s important to recognize what we’ve been through and how it’s brought us to where we are, and the only way to do that is by coming to terms with our burdens.

Dancers: Zoe Joralemon, Biz Carlin

THIS JUST IN

Choreographer Bella Gutierrez

Dancers Zoe Joralemon, Avery Taylor, Understudy: Frances Reid

Music News clips edited by Bella Gutierrez and Eric Midgley Growing up in this world with all the different challenges and violence we’re faced with, especially at a young age- sometimes having to be aware and watch is too hard. You feel confined, hopeless, and scared. This piece is about all those catastrophic events that we never really give much thought to, and how that affects us and the younger generation.

Dancers: Bella Gutierrez, Avery Taylor

COMING HOME

Choreographer Avery Taylor

Dancers Delilah Irby, Lottie MacGregor, Kate Ryan, Understudy: Lexy Ankeny

Music “Music for Indigo” by Adrianne Lenker

This piece is about remembering and reliving memories from the past. It explores the memories one chooses to let go, memories one chooses to embrace, and how relationships between people impacts this. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized the importance of reflection; how valuable it is to confront things in my past, acknowledge the present moment, and then move on to the future. This reflection is the intention behind this piece.
