CEO MESSAGE With dignity and compassion for all

» » Best Places to Work in Omaha® » » Best Places to Work for the Advancement of Women Award » » Better Business Bureau Integrity Award » » HRSA National Quality Leader and Health Center Quality Leader » » South High School Hall of Fame 2018 Community Partner Award » » Top 2% ranking for clinical quality among the nation’s 1,400+ community health centers » » Joint Commission re-accreditation and certification as a Patient-Centered Medical Home » » UNMC College of Pharmacy’s 2018 Site of the Year In 2018, we also celebrated milestones such as the 10-year anniversary of our clinic in Plattsmouth, and we made some noteworthy investments, including becoming the owner of the historic Livestock Exchange Building, expanding the Learning Community Center of South Omaha, finding a location for our second Teen and Young Adult Health Center and purchasing a second mobile dental clinic. OneWorld is growing and adapting to better serve our community, and we look forward to another year of opportunities. Thank you for your support as we continue to provide compassionate care both inside our clinics and outside our doors with a focus on vulnerable populations that need our services now more than ever.

We know that the journey to health is not always straightforward. Each patient faces a unique set of challenges, and we strive to treat everyone with dignity and compassion—from the inside out. When community members come inside our clinics, we care for the whole person. We help our patients access crucial services, including medical and dental care, and we offer behavioral/mental health care, substance abuse services, affordable medications and supportive services. We reduce health inequities by going beyond basic health care and by providing resources like warm clothes, food and legal assistance. We actively partner with the greater community to address significant barriers for our patients by advocating for underserved populations. Our work to meet our patients’ needs both inside and outside our doors has a collective impact on the overall health and economic vitality of each individual and the community. In 2018, our clinics provided 46,292 unique underserved patients with quality, affordable health care services—nearly an 11% increase from the number of patients we cared for in 2017. We strive to provide top-quality, compassionate care for each and every person, and in 2018, the community responded by recognizing us for our work. I am proud to share that OneWorld received a number of significant awards in 2018, including the following:

Andrea Skolkin, Chief Executive Officer

OneWorld Community Health Centers, in partnership with the community, provides culturally respectful, quality health care with special attention to the underserved.

To be an innovative leader in health care, empowering individuals and creating healthier communities.

“I would like you to know how much I appreciate your assistance. Whenever I come to OneWorld, I feel valued because of your time and the way you handle my care. The service that you provide to me is the most important aspect of my relationship with your organization. To feel respected and to be able to trust those you work with is what makes me feel good even when I leave the building. Because of you, I always feel welcome at OneWorld.”

“A gentleman sitting in the stairwell was obviously upset and had said something to another employee about not being able to pay for his medication … I told him not to worry about the cost of the antibiotic and that we would take care of that … He came back into the pharmacy, and we took care of the $4 charge. We had the opportunity to impact his life over an amount of money that most of us would take for granted.”

Compassion beyond the basics OneWorld helps patients overcome barriers to health

We know that a person’s health is affected not only by illness and chronic conditions, but also by inequities in social and economic conditions. Many of the families who seek care at OneWorld cannot obtain support services elsewhere due to barriers like unreliable transportation, language gaps, cultural misunderstandings and/or a lack of trust. Because we want everyone’s needs to be met, OneWorld works with donors, supporters, volunteers and partners to go beyond health care and provide needed resources for underserved members of our community.

OneWorld is committed to improving the overall health of the greater Omaha community. We partner with many community organizations, including the following, to better care for underserved populations: Collaborating with compassion OneWorld strengthens community connections PATIENT VOICE OneWorld’s grassroots Patient Voice Committee was formed in 2018 to allow more health center patients to share their ideas and shape decisions about how OneWorld can better serve the community. The group meets once per month at OneWorld’s Livestock Exchange Building campus. “I am proud and happy to be a part of this group,” Blanca Lopez, a founding member of the organization, said. “I feel important. When we first started, it was a bit unclear what kind of impact we had on the community and OneWorld, but most recently, we’ve been shown how our group impacts OneWorld and how we are helping the community.” PFLAG PFLAG Omaha is a support group for people within the LGBTQIA+ community, families, friends and allies. In partnership with OneWorld, PFLAG offers bilingual support meetings conducted in Spanish and English. The group meets monthly at OneWorld, and all meetings are free and open to everyone. ADOLESCENT HEALTH PROJECT/GET CHECKED OMAHA As an Adolescent Health Project partner, we provide sexual and reproductive health education, outreach and services for Omaha youth and young adults. Omaha Teen Generation (OTG) is OneWorld’s teen group of peer educators whose goal is to familiarize more teens with OneWorld and Get Checked Omaha so that, when young people need help with medical questions, birth control, STDs and more, visiting clinics won’t be a scary experience. COMMUNITY HEALTH PROMOTERS (PROMOTORAS) OneWorld’s promotoras , or community health promoters, work to increase health care access and disease prevention within minority populations in Douglas and Sarpy counties. Our promotoras are peers and community members who connect with their neighbors, families, friends and communities to promote health, offer screening services and focus on preventing diseases like diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. They also link individuals to OneWorld as their health care home.

Calling for compassion OneWorld advocates to impact lives

We actively advocate for issues that affect the health and well-being of our patients and employees. Through these efforts, we want to reinforce our mission of helping people one-on-one and letting the community know that everyone—regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, immigration status or ability to pay—is welcome at OneWorld. We are committed to being a steady voice in advocating for Nebraska’s most underserved populations.

Some of the issues we advocated for in 2018 include:

» » Medicaid Expansion » » Reproductive Health » » Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) » » Immigration Reform » » The Federal “Public Charge” Policy » » Funding for Community Health Centers » » LGBTQIA+ Health

After federal funding for community health centers expired in October 2017, OneWorld joined the Health Center Advocacy Network, the Health Center Association of Nebraska and other health centers nationwide in advocating for funding reauthorization. As Congress delayed action to fix the funding cliff, OneWorld faced losing federal funds, and more than 100,000 patients in Nebraska were at risk of losing access to comprehensive, affordable health care. Thanks to efforts from OneWorld and other community health center advocates, the 1,400 health centers across the nation received the resources they need to operate. “While we are grateful to have the funds we need for the time being, we also don’t want to have to go through this process again every two years,” Andrea Skolkin, Chief Executive Officer of OneWorld, said. “Health center advocates are now pushing for a long-term funding solution for community health centers.”
