Rising to Meet our Mission Because the challenges in our community are rising, OneWorld is rising. Our welcoming and culturally respectful clinic spaces help underserved members of our community feel comfortable coming to receive the health care services and support they need. We continue to grow and adapt in order to provide everyone who seeks our help with affordable, top-quality health care. Once again, we ranked in the top 2% for health outcomes among the nation’s 1,400+ community health centers. This year, we cared for more patients than ever before: 41,868 unique patients from 70 ZIP codes at our 11 clinical locations. In order to reach as many people as possible, we expanded our clinic in northwest Omaha to include urgent medical and dental care, and we formed a unique Medical/Legal Partnership with the Immigrant Legal Center. With these and other program additions, we anticipate welcoming even more people to OneWorld clinics next year. OneWorld strives to be a place that is non-judgmental, patient-centered and focused on addressing the whole person with respect and dignity. Being healthy requires an eye not just on health, but also on the community support system and policies. Early in 2017, our board of directors adopted an immigration reform policy position, and we took public stances on issues that affected the health and well-being of our patients and employees. At local, state and federal levels, we expressed support for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Medicaid expansion, reauthorization of the Community Health Center fund and state legislation seeking to protect refugees. OneWorld is proud to be a steady voice in advocating for Nebraska’s most underserved populations, and we look forward to another year of growth as we provide quality, affordable health care to all—regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, immigration status or ability to pay.

Patients & Participants Rising Teen and Young Adult Health Center helps patient cope with depression
English classes boost confidence
When Patricia Paniagua first came to the U.S. from Guatemala with her children in 2015, she was both excited and frightened. She couldn’t wait to be reunited with her husband, who had been living in the U.S. for four years, but she was also nervous because of her language barrier. “My first struggle was communication with people,” she said. “I was so scared to go to the store … I remember my first conference at my kids’ school, I was scared to go. I had to ask for a translator.” About a year later, Patricia was referred for English classes at the Learning Community Center of South Omaha. She was thrilled that she could take classes and bring her youngest child along. Since starting classes, her English has improved significantly. “It’s amazing, and it’s a dream come true,” she said. “I’m learning, and every class that I come to is different, it’s wonderful, it’s unique! … I feel more confident since I started studying here.”
According to Dr. Amy Lacroix, a provider at OneWorld’s Teen and Young Adult Health Center, the clinic has been able to help several young patients through difficult situations in the past year. One young woman came to the clinic with her father because she was suffering from depression after graduating from high school. “She was spending all her time in her room, on her phone and on the internet with no social outlets,” Dr. Lacroix said. After her initial meeting with the staff at the clinic, the patient began coming in regularly for follow-up appointments, seeing the clinic’s behavioral health specialist and taking medication. “She is now trying to set goals for herself,” Dr. Lacroix said. “She got a job, she has a new look, and she is trying to meet people.”

Staf f Rising Employee advocates for DACA in Washington, D.C. In 2017, a OneWorld employee who is a participant in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program traveled with Andrea Skolkin, CEO, to Washington, D.C. There, she spoke to Nebraska’s members of Congress about the importance of passing the Dream Act of 2017. “I don’t remember coming to the U.S., and I don’t see why I have to go to Mexico,” the employee said. “I talked to our elected officials about my daughter a lot…I would never leave my daughter behind, so if I had to leave, I would be taking a lot away from her.” Skolkin and the employee hoped that sharing her family’s story with Nebraska’s senators and representatives would convey

Our staff members are some of OneWorld’s greatest assets, so we are proud to celebrate their successes. In 2017, several residents who completed rotations at OneWorld and several established staff members went on to become doctors or Physician Assistants (PAs). One student doing clinical rotations at OneWorld in 2017 was a former OneWorld patient. Mitzi Infante-Magaña came to OneWorld seeking help with an illness while she was an uninsured undergraduate student, and according to her, being treated by a OneWorld PA was a turning point in her life. From that point on, she started studying to become a PA, and she loved being able to come back to OneWorld for part of her training. “Being immigrants, my family had very little access to good health care,” Mitzi said. “That’s what I love so much about OneWorld—they don’t turn people away.”

Community Leadership Rising Teen and Young Adult Health Center becomes trusted community resource
Partnerships allow for holistic care
New collaborative partnerships have allowed us to go beyond health care and provide more resources to vulnerable members of our community. OneWorld and the Immigrant Legal Center (ILC) formed a unique Immigrant-focused Medical/Legal Partnership in 2017 to assist qualifying patients with free legal assistance for immigration issues. Similarly, OneWorld’s Associate Medical Director of Women’s Health, Courtney Allen Cowardin, CNM, created a partnership with Saving Grace Perishable Food Rescue, a local nonprofit that delivers excess perishable food to nonprofits that feed the hungry. Patients can now come to the Women’s Health Center on Friday afternoons to receive bags of healthy groceries. “My inspiration was talking to patients and having them tell me that they had food insecurity or that they were hungry and their kids were hungry,” she said.
Since OneWorld’s Teen and Young Adult Health Center opened in 2016, the clinic has provided primary and behavioral health care and sexual health services for thousands of young patients who speak nine different languages and live in 13 different ZIP codes. According to data from South High School, which is located across the street from the clinic, the number of pregnant students at the school decreased by half between the 2015-2016 school year and the 2016-2017 school year.
OneWorld opens second Quick Sick urgent care location
In 2017, OneWorld expanded its clinic in northwest Omaha to include a Quick Sick urgent care clinic. The new Quick Sick clinic offers patients the ability to walk in and receive care for both medical and dental issues—no appointment needed.

Donors & Supporters Rising Saint Gerald Catholic Church boosts the Baby Boutique
Volunteer numbers soar in 2017
In 2017, we counted 25 volunteer clinicians, and we gained 24 new general operations volunteers. Our volunteer clinicians specialize in fields such as dermatology, endocrinology, optometry and pulmonology, and they generously donate hours of their time to OneWorld. With the addition of a new general operations volunteer program, volunteer opportunities grew to include working in our Baby Boutique, assisting with English classes at the Learning Community Center, greeting patients, helping with administrative tasks and working on various special projects. “I enjoy volunteering at OneWorld because it’s good to get exposure to a diverse patient population,” Dr. Debra Romberger, a volunteer physician in OneWorld’s TB clinic, said. “You learn from the patients, and you learn from their situations, and you feel like you’re helping them in some small way.”
Sewing and knitting groups at Saint Gerald Catholic Church in Ralston support OneWorld by frequently donating hundreds of handcrafted baby blankets, bibs, hats and more for our Baby Boutique. Our patients “purchase” these items with Baby Bucks they earn for attending prenatal and newborn appointments. In addition to the church’s regular contributions, their donation drive in October 2017 resulted in carloads of diapers, baby wipes and baby outfits for the Baby Boutique. Thanks to Saint Gerald Catholic Church, babies and families can access needed items. “Giving our time, effort and resources is worthwhile for us because it is a way to share the talents we have with others who will benefit from them,” one of the volunteers said.
