What They Said
NEIGHBORHOOD ENGAGEMENT “Neighborhood engagement. Being available and being visible in the neighborhood.”
• Neighborhood Engagement • Community development (housing, Carver Market) • Affordable housing development
“They are not selfish. They help any and everybody.”
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT “The homes that have been built in south Atlanta. Since 1989 we’re a striving community and it seems everyone wants to buy here. Working for APD (Zone 3), they wanted an officer, so I purchased a house and I’ve seen the growth of FCS since then and I’m grateful that they came into partnership with us.” “I’d never heard of an organization that wanted to live in the neighborhood they are trying to change. It is a total effort. Nothing is held back. They are fully invested in every possible way.” “I’m appreciative of the south Atlanta coop and also so very proud of how they’re building the neighborhood because there were a lot of rundown houses. Cleaning up the community and making it look like someone wants to live here.”
“Carver Market and being able to have that asset (access to fresh foods and vegetables) and the coffee shop is a space where neighbors can gather and experience community.”
AFFORDABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT “As an FCS homeowner, I’m most proud of their affordable housing initiatives.”
EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS/STORYTELLLING “Position themselves very well but being an organization that’s not trying to make a profit can inherently put FCS at a disadvantage.” “The things FCS does, they do very well. But there is a lack of knowledge around all the things that FCS does. They do a lot of things, but I don’t necessarily know about all of them.” COMPETITION “Other developers are trying to invade what FCS is doing in the area (selling houses at high prices). FCS continues to do their work and provide for people. It’s sad that people want to buy homes but can’t afford these prices.” “A house across the street sold for $40K, then after they remodeled the home, it went for $260K. To me, that was gouging.” RESIDENT TRAINING (FINANCIAL LITERACY) “If FCS could provide some training on financial literacy that would be great. The people that would get pushed out of the neighborhood, it won’t be because of taxes, it would be because of financial literacy.” COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT “If we had more home improvement for seniors. Some of the things we need done, we can’t afford to do it. Things that are next door to senior homes where they can’t get out and keep them clean. The sidewalks are so bad we can’t take walks without stumbling and falling.”
• External Communications/ Storytelling • Competition (Developers/ Investors) • Resident training (financial literacy) • Community development (senior home improvement, leadership training, neighborhood watch)
“We have a lot of seniors at Blackshear. They need to get a little more involved – we need to reach out to them and offer programs for seniors.”
“Leadership development training and also a neighborhood watch. I’ve been thinking about it but it would be good to have FCS support it.” “At the civic league we’ve seen a gap without an anchor of support (Katie). It’s something to be mindful of (similar to what Tanisha was saying). Information is power when it comes to that sort of thing (getting involved).”
