Neigborhood Residents

What They Said

NEIGHBORHOOD SELF-SUFFICIENCY “I would love to see FCS be able to leave and continue their work somewhere else. They’ve provided all of the tools, commerce…That’s my ultimate goal. Creating spaces that have businesses. They’ve created an ecosystem of commerce and that’s great, but we’d be fooling ourselves if we thought they’d be here forever.”

• Neighborhood self- sufficiency

• Community economic development (food and healthcare) • Neighborhood engagement (legacy neighbors) • External communications/ storytelling (Impact, suitability of outcomes)

COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT “Establishing that community with services that are truly needed so we’re not a desert for food or healthcare.”

“Uniting the community regardless of age or whatever, they are unifying the community.

NEIGHBORHOOD ENGAGEMENT “Continue to engage neighbors. Paying particular attention to legacy neighbors. It may take a little more focused effort to engage the legacy neighbors.”

“Being a good neighbor is the essence of everything they do and that speaks to me every time.”

EXTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS/STORYTELLING “Showing that this model is sustainable. That would be the greatest impact they could do. Grant Park puffs up their chest as though they’re the greatest neighborhood but don’t acknowledge that FCS helped them to get there.”

PROGRAM OUTCOMES “FCS puts out its strategic plan, but the overall neighborhood doesn’t read them. Jeff and Katie and Jim give us updates at meetings. Anything beyond that would be on us to find out the 5-year plan, etc.” “Working through those areas and seeing them come to fruition. The strategic plan should align with some of the things that are in the neighborhood master plan that was presented to the city.” “I think it might be nice to see an update of some kind (of the plan) to see a checklist of progress. To see all those hours we put in as a neighborhood (with FCS as a lead) are paying off.” “FCS doesn’t want to take over the neighborhood, they want to empower the neighborhood. Quantify folks that feel empowered to stay in their homes as long as they want to without worrying about taxes, gentrification, etc. Some initiatives around measuring employment, and impact of various initiatives.”

• Program Outcomes (intentional, strategic growth and innovative and holistic development) • Enhanced community development (less plight, transportation, speed bumps, restaurants) • Access to health and wellness (7 areas of holistic development/ 7 wellness dimensions) • Neighbor self-sufficiency (training for neighbors to become actively engaged)

“Intentional growth and strategic growth. I’d like to see FCS use their abilities to help get a dentist in the area.”

“FYI...Focused Community Strategies partners with under-resourced neighborhoods to provide innovative and holistic development that produces flourishing communities where God’s Shalom is present.”

ENHANCED COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT “Less blight, more connectivity. More transportation within the neighborhood.”

“We’ve been trying to get speed breakers on some of these streets. They said we don’t have enough traffic. Maybe FCS could help us in that area.”

“Make more emphasis as a neighborhood with regard to our city representatives. I’d hate to see something tragic happen before they pay attention”

“How do we not become Grant Park? There is a sense of entitlement that that neighborhood has. Especially around property values and worse parts of gentrification. FCS is a great catalyst for making the desirable things (schools, etc.) happen.”

“A restaurant where we can get a full course meal.”

ACCESS TO HEALTH AND WELLNESS “FCS mission talks about holistic development. I think of the 7 areas of holistic development. If they had something that addressed each of those 7 wellness dimensions (providing neighbors with access) that would be the perfect example of success.” NEIGHBORHOOD SELF-SUFFICIENCY “A theme of handing the work off to the neighborhood. Legitimately finding a plan for neighbors to take over (training for neighbors to become actively engaged). There is definitely more space for neighbors to jump in.”

“Grant Park became the golden child when the neighbors jumped in and made it their own.”
