PROMISING

YOUNG WOMAN Combining elements from revenge movies, romantic comedies and suspense thrillers, this genre-blending film is unapologetically confronting. Carrie Mulligan stars as Cassie, a former medical student whose life has been derailed by the rape of her best friend. After dropping out of school, and life in general, Cassie spends her days going through the motions working at a local café; her nights are spent feigning drunkenness and baiting men who have the temerity to try and take advantage of her. When the perpetrators who raped her friend resurface, Cassie’s dark hobby escalates into a revenge mission... Promising Young Woman is a jolting piece of social commentary – with an ending that will get people talking. PREMIERES 7TH SEE MORE

OF AGE

PIXIE Pixie is her name and trouble is her game. The wannabe art student masterminds a drug- heist (which naturally goes awry) and then must flee across Ireland from vengeful gangster priests. She hits the road with a bag full of MDMA, a body in the boot of the car and two gormless lads from the local pub. The tone of this hectic comedy-thriller is Father Ted -meets-Tarantino – a fun take on the classic road-trip film. Starring Olivia Cooke, Ben Hardy, Daryl McCormack & Alec Baldwin

ANOTHER ROUND Denmark’s Oscars submission is a tale of stunted growth and ennui, but above all it’s a showcase for the brilliantly enigmatic Mads Mikkelsen. Another Round is a character study hiding behind an outrageous premise: four friends, all middle-aged men who teach at a local high school, embark on a pseudoscientific exploration of the benefits of day-drinking. The common denominator between them is a feeling that they’ve somehow missed out on life; it’s clear that what they are really yearning for is not drunkenness, but the excitement and sense of indestructibility embedded in adolescence. PREMIERES 28TH SEE MORE Ottolenghi & The Cakes of Versailles Celebrity chef Yotam Ottolenghi assembles a star-studded team of the world's most innovative pastry chefs to create an extravagant Versailles- themed culinary gala at the Met Museum in New York. 7th From The Vine a downtrodden CEO travels back to Italy to re-calibrate his moral compass. WIN  3 X DAWN RAID DOUBLE PASSES TO GIVE AWAY*

SERVING UP AN EPIC SLICE OF KIWI HIP-HOP HISTORY DAWN RAID DIRECTED BY OSCAR KIGHTLY PREMIERES 21ST SEE MORE From NZ to NYC – and back again – director Oscar Kightley explores the untold story of Dawn Raid Entertainment, with founders Andy Murmane and Brotha D, who describe the rise, fall, and rebirth of the iconic NZ music label. From humble beginnings selling t-shirts in South Auckland, the somewhat unlikely Dawn Raid duo got up, and stood up – in classic NZ underdog style – to achieve great things against the odds. Serving up both talent and swagger, they became global music royalty, performing with superstars like Beyoncé, 50 Cent and G-Unit, and collaborating with Wu-Tang Clan and Akon. Of course It wasn’t all chart-topping and glamour: there were challenges and struggles; artists’ rifts; tax debts; failure; betrayal – but ultimately they created an undeniable legacy that paved the way for future generations of New Zealand music artists. Some of the biggest names in local hip-hop and RnB including Savage, Mareko, Adeaze, Aaradhna and MC Scribe give an insider’s perspective on the legendary label.

RIALTO CHANNEL PRESENTS STIEG LARSSON AND THE MILLENNIUM TRILOGY, FRIDAYS AT 8:30 SEE MORE Larsson’s Millennium books were a worldwide sensation when they were published (posthumously, after his unexpected death at age 50), and were subsequently made into three internationally successful Swedish films. Like his books’ male protagonist, Larsson was a politically engaged, left-wing, investigative journalist – well known as an independent researcher and campaigner against right- wing extremism – work that earned him death threats, and a life that was replete with the intrigue and danger that fuelled his novels. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo , 1st The Girl Who Played With Fire , 8th The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest , 15th The trilogy centers around two protagonists, who wage war against the villains of society: Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), a damaged and asocial, genius computer hacker with a photographic memory; and “I ABHOR CRIME NOVELS IN WHICH THE MAIN CHARACTER BEHAVES HOWEVER HE OR SHE PLEASES, WITHOUT THOSE ACTIONS HAVING SOCIAL CONSEQUE

Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), a principled investigative journalist and

publisher of a magazine called Millennium. In each instalment respectively they work to find the killer of a billionaire’s niece who has been dead for 40 years, to uncover a sex- trafficking ring that is aided by the government, and to defend themselves against state corruption and repression. THE LEGEND OF BARON TO’A

 Fritz, a Tongan entrepreneur living in Australia, returns to his old Auckland neighbourhood to sell his childhood home. He becomes embroiled with a local gang, and a corrupt cop, inadvertently causing the theft of his late father's priceless pro-wrestling championship belt. When negotiation and diplomacy fail to secure its return, Fritz is forced to embrace his father's fighting legacy to try and get the belt back, by defeating the gang kingpin. First-time director Kiel McNaughton’s crowd-pleasing New Zealand film is a wacky – and highly entertaining – hybrid of martial arts movie and folksy comedy, set amongst the world of criminal gangsters. Starring Uli Latukefu, John Tui, Nathaniel Lees, Jay Laga’aia, Shavaughn Ruakere.

NEEDED TO BE TOLD How much did you know about honour abuse and violence before this production? “I was aware of the idea of so-called honour- based violence and the toxicity of shame driving extreme abuse. I had my own experience of abuse and the societal carried shame of being a gay man growing up in the 1970s and 80s. I remembered the Banaz case but had no idea of the extent of the heartbreaking brutality that she suffered nor the fact that she had turned to the police for help so often before she was tragically murdered. “When I read the scripts, I was floored by the power of the story and Gwyneth’s screen- play. I then watched the 2012 documentary Banaz: A Love Story before I met Liza Marshall of Hera Pictures. “I was considering directing another drama at the time but having read Honour there was no choice. I felt this was a story that needed to be told. My hope is that in some way we can try to help puncture the shame that stops people re- porting honour-based abuse. The shame I had carried came frommy belief that I was ‘wrong’, there was something inherently bad about me. By telling this story, maybe we can help people living under the control of honour systems realise that it’s not them who are wrong or at fault. “When we spoke to Karma Nirvana, the British charity which supports victims of honour-based abuse, they explained that often it tends to be their nearest and dearest that are abusing them, making it even harder to report. Perpetrators will use shame to ensure victims don’t report it." Why turn this story into a TV drama? “Telling this story as drama allows us to reach as wide an audience as possible. The audience’s way into the story is via Caroline played by Kee- ley Hawes, one of the UK’s most loved actresses, and I hope this casting will bring audiences to

Director Richard Laxton

this issue, and allow them to connect to a world that, likeme, they may have little knowledge of, via a character who also joins the case with a lot to learn about this issue. Through drama we can show the characters with an intimacy and closeness that will bring the audience into the emotional heart of the story.” What is your prime job as a director? “My primary job is to bring the audience into the heart of the story and its core characters. By creating emotional connectivity I hope there may be a more compassionate understanding of difference. We all share feelings of love, fear, vulnerability, regardless of wherewe come from.” What attracted you to the scripts written by Gwyneth Hughes? “Gwyneth has an extraordinary skill in capturing the core of this story and writing the emotional heart of the characters. When I read the screenplay I was struck by the delicacy of tone and compelling dramatisation.” What are your thoughts about the fact Banaz was murdered despite asking police for help? “When I see the real-life police video footage of Banaz coming to a police station and say- ing, ‘This is happening to me,’ I find it so heart- breaking. I hugely admire her strength and courage but I’m also heartbroken that she was a victim of this crime. It seemed she was alone in her pain and despair and tragically invisible to those who she was asking to help her. “DCI Caroline Goode’s subsequent work was remarkable because she was utterly determined that she was not going to let this young girl be ignored any more. She says she

was just doing her job but she and her team did not rest and overcame every hurdle to get justice for Banaz.”

THE CONTROL OF HONOUR SYSTEMS

Banaz’s murder was brutal and deeply shocking. How do you deal with that? “I was very conscious of striking the balance between telling the story and not exploiting the brutality and shock of what hap- pened. We all agreed from the start that we would never depict Banaz’s murder in any way. Instead, Gwyneth wrote a scene where Caroline reads the translation of a phone call where one of the accused is boasting about her assault and murder. It is still very affecting and the audience experience, the brutality of the crime through aroline and the impact on her personally.”

 SEE MORE The story follows the police investigation, and the revelations about police failings, in the run-up to the so-called ‘honour killing’ of Banaz Mahmod, a 20-year-old Iraqi Kurdish woman who was murdered on the orders of her family when she left an abusive arranged marriage bringing ‘shame’ upon them. When DCI Caroline Goode (Keeley Hawes), discovered that Banaz had been to the police five times to report the family’s threats to her life, she was appalled that her colleagues had missed multiple chances to prevent this murder. Caroline vowed that she would not rest until she finally got justice for Banaz. It was a promise that would quickly become all-consuming.

A ARON WILKINSON WILD ABOUT THE WEATHER... You’re a self-described storm chaser, what does that entail? Keeping an eye on the weather, looking for potentially unstable situations in the coming days usually via weather models. When I see something worthy of chasing then hopefully I’m free – and if not then plans are cast aside to make sure I am free! I’ll usually drive to where I think storms may initiate, a timing thing when it comes to the weather – the perfect confluence of parameters/events and the roading network to get me there. Once in situ I’ll wait around for storms to develop or if I see a big cloud brewing in another direction 30 or 40km away I’ll shift, provided it’s right, but sometimes you have to stick to your game plan. Once a storm has developed I’m usually chasing it, keeping ahead of it to take photos of cloud structure and hopefully lightning if I’m lucky. Just taking it all in really. Were obsessed about the weather from a young age? I always liked the weather growing up, but I remember the 1992 snow storm in particular and lightning flashing through the curtains. It was probably some elusive thunder snow, but I didn’t know then. It was a big storm on the 27th October 2002 that really made me plunge head-first into trying to figure the weather out. A tornado dropped down near Tai Tapu on the outskirts of Christchurch, there was big hail across the city and ferocious lightning. John Gaul from the New Zealand Thunderstorm Society (believe it or not) filmed that tornado and I hunted him down to get a copy. I’m still good friends with John to this day, he lives in Geraldine, Canterbury’s ‘thunderstorm corner’. Apart from weather systems, what do you like to watch in your downtime? I watch a movie here and there but honestly not a lot of TV for me these days, there are too many other things I have to focus on. Apologies considering this is a magazine about films and what’s on TV! Are there any TV shows you’re currently binge watching? There is a series that’s just come out on Amazon Prime called “Wayne”. It was only 10 episodes so I smashed it out in three days, it was pretty cool. I went through all of Seinfeld three years ago in pretty quick fashion, I lived in the country then so had a little more time up my sleeve. What’s the forecast for summer 2021? Please say it’s good! I’ll tell you one thing: it’ll be a bit warmer than spring, a bit warmer than autumn, definitely warmer than winter LOL. Mostly I’m a dude who deals in the next 5 to 10 days max, long range forecasts I leave to the expert, Phil Duncan from WeatherWatch.co.nz who I’ve been working with for the past 10 years.

The WeatherWatch analyst and self-confessed storm chaser is a regular on Country TV and unsurprisingly he spends more time watching the skies than the screen! COUNTRY TV ON SKY  SEE MORE
