THE ROLE OF PRAYER Prayer may be important to some people and not to others so it’s important for volunteers to take the lead from the dying person and family. If someone asks you to pray with him or her, ask “What would you like me to pray for?” People often find it helpful when prayers include their fears or concerns. Here are examples of prayers from different faith traditions taken from the Oxford Book of Prayer (1989) that volunteers can use when someone asks for a prayer.
