The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into education marks the beginning of a transformative era, unlocking remarkable opportunities for innovation in teaching and learning, as Nicola Gatti and Susanna Sancassani from the Politecnico di Milano outline here. With additional input from Luca Alessandrelli, Tommaso Bianchi, Daniela Casiraghi, Maristella Matera and Ludovica Piro EMBRACING THE EdTech Revolution T he AI revolution is reshaping how educators approach their profession and how students engage with learning. previously inaccessible. These insights, in turn, enable educators to trace patterns and trends, adjust their teaching strategies accordingly and deliver targeted interventions that enhance learning outcomes. AI-powered tools can also increase collaboration among students, encouraging them to undertake problem-solving and project-based activities that transcend subject boundaries. All of this contributes to fostering a truly holistic learning experience where students can apply knowledge from many disciplines to real-world scenarios. Combining new technology & pedagogical theory To make these advancements available to students and teachers at the Politecnico di Milano, we have developed a tool called My Learning Talk (MLT). This innovative platform, designed to complement and improve traditional classroom instruction, allows students to delve deeper into a topic by means of an AI-based dialogue system trained with materials provided by teachers themselves. Thanks to MLT, students can benefit from customised examples and quizzes with personalised feedback, leading to a dynamic learning experience. By simulating dialogue with a tutor, the tool helps students clarify their doubts, explore different perspectives on a given subject and nurture critical thinking skills. Teachers, on the other hand, can leverage MLT to supplement their lesson plans, create engaging assignments and monitor student progress with greater accuracy.
enables an unprecedented level of personalisation of the educational experience, allowing content to be tailored to meet the unique needs of each and every learner. Not only does this approach bolster students’ strengths, it also helps to address their areas for improvement. AI-enabled personalised learning means educational content can be adapted in real-time based on the student’s progress, learning style and preferences. If a student is struggling with a particular concept, for instance, an AI-powered system can provide additional resources, alternative explanations and practice problems to help overcome the difficulties. At the same time, AI can introduce more advanced topics to students who excel and seek further challenges. This high degree of adaptability ensures that every student progresses at their own pace and supports their personal development while fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment. Moreover, AI equips educators with sophisticated instruments for promoting critical thinking and active learning within a transdisciplinary framework. By leveraging data analytics and machine learning algorithms, teachers can gain insights into student performance and learning behaviours that were
