DECEMBER 2019

Looking Back at an Incredible Decade

The end of 2019 marks the end of the decade. It’s been quite an eventful 10 years at the practice and in my personal life. The world is a very different place than it was in 2010. Over the past 10 years, I have watched my kids grow up, and I have watched my two older kids graduate from high school and college. One graduated from UCLA and the other from USC. My youngest son has only just started middle school. Going into the 2020s, I will watch my youngest graduate high school and attend college, as well. It will be interesting to see his journey unfold just like it did for the others. This past decade, I also wrote two best-selling books, “Anti-Aging Dentistry” and “The Hidden Epidemic.” Writing both of these books was a large undertaking and served as a fantastic way to educate patients and the general public about major issues in the dental world. Education plays a big role in what I do as a cosmetic dentist. There are so many cosmetic and anti-aging treatments available, so it’s important to understand what makes the most sense for each individual patient, and these books help lay that foundation. You can still find these books on Amazon.com. After authoring two books, my other major professional accomplishment was developing an innovative oral care brand called Oral Essentials. It was another way to help bring my vision of healthier, biocompatible dentistry and oral care to life. Even better, it’s a project I’ve been able to work on with my oldest son. Last month, I mentioned my eldest son helps run the Oral Essentials business. The benefit of this is the fact that I get to see him just about every day! I’m very proud of the work he’s done helping develop the Oral Essentials brand. I’m also very proud of my daughter. I mentioned her last month, as well. She is currently attending dental hygiene school and is on the path to becoming a dentist. She has already accomplished so much, and I am looking forward to what she accomplished in the next decade — the sky’s the limit. In the middle of it all, I also worked on the development of Infinity Veneers. These veneers, which we introduced into the practice in the last few years, were designed to solve a major problem presented by

traditional porcelain veneers: discoloration over time. We developed a porcelain and cement system that resisted discoloration, giving patients great options that would last longer than traditional veneers. They have been a great success! It has been a wonderful decade with many blessings and accomplishments. I have watched my practice grow, and I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful new patients. I am looking forward to the next decade. There are still many more ways to innovate in the dental field, more ways to make oral care even healthier. I look forward to exploring new ideas and accomplishing even bigger goals.

As 2019 comes to an end and this decade comes to a close, I wish you the best on your own journey. Here is to a fantastic 2020 and beyond!

Holistic Health Products for All

Holistic wellness is sometimes seen as an inaccessible form of care. Holistic treatments and products can be hard to find, but access to them should never be restricted based on location, demographics, or affluence. Thankfully, this problem is becoming less relevant as more stores begin stocking holistic products Holistic health products, which were often reserved for expensive online shopping or limited boutique releases in the past, are becoming more accessible as drugstores and big-box stores around the country jump on the holistic health train. Chains like Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, and Target have started stocking their shelves with notable holistic staples, especially those related to digestive and immune health. You can even find cleaner beauty and cosmetic products from brands like Burt’s Bees and Tom’s of Maine in many of these stores. Safer baby products, like cough syrup made with all-natural ingredients and diapers from brands like The Honest Company, are being placed in the eyesight of more people everywhere. With this shift in availability, customers have more options than ever before when shopping for holistic care. These stores have an incredible opportunity to bring alternative wellness to areas that haven’t experienced it. Citizens in small, rural, or distressed communities where specialty stores and holistic medical practices are scarce can now explore more options. And if more options at reasonable prices result in healthier and happier people, then that’s great for us all. Your teeth actually help support your lips. If your teeth aren’t in their correct orientation, it can alter the look of your face. Over time, you may notice a change in the way your lips are shaped or even how your nose sits on your face! It just goes to show how important your teeth are. Another thing to look for are lines angled downward on each side of your lips. If these lines are present, your jawmay be too far closed. As a result, it’s compressing your lips and cheeks, which means your bite may need to be corrected. Additionally, take a close look at your teeth. Look for stains and wear. If they appear shorter or more crowded than they did in the past, these can be signs of clenching, grinding, or eating foods too hard for your teeth.

Does Anti-Aging Dentistry Make Sense for You?

Over time, our teeth age. After years of wear and tear from consuming popular beverages like coffee, tea, wine, and smoothies, our teeth begin to lose their luster. They stain, wear down, and may even chip. If not addressed, these problems can get worse, and issues such as chipping or cracking can lead to more serious complications like tooth decay. Our teeth are resilient, but with a combination of time and lifestyle choices, this resilience only goes so far. But you don’t have to compromise. You can turn back the clock thanks to advances in anti-aging dentistry. Here are a few examples offered by Dr. Maddahi:

• •

Teeth whitening Porcelain veneers

• •

Infinity Veneers Dental implants

There is a solution for every kind of issue, and you can determine if anti-aging dentistry makes sense for you right at home! While looking in the mirror or at photographs of your teeth, here are a few things to consider. While smiling, look at the profile of your front teeth. Are they straight up and down or do they slope inward? If they slope inward, you may be losing support in your lips. This can lead to the development of vertical lines around the mouth (which is another sign your teeth may need to be realigned).

These are just a few examples you can use to determine if you are a candidate for anti-aging dentistry. Every issue listed above can be corrected with anti-aging dentistry. If you aren’t sure or you have more questions about Dr. Maddahi’s innovative approach to anti-aging dentistry, you can call us and set up a consultation at 888.597.9470.

5 Foods That Can Damage Your Teeth

Citrus Lemons and limes are among the worst foods for your teeth. Their high acid content destroys enamel. If you’re concerned about the health of your teeth, it’s best to skip this kind of fruit. If you want to flavor your water with something fruity and aromatic, berries make a great alternative. Hard Candy There’s no getting around the fact that sugar is bad for your teeth (and your body), but hard candy is particularly problematic. While most hard candies are meant to be enjoyed over a longer period of time, we may inadvertently chew on them. This can cause cracking and chipping. To make matters worse, the sticky candy can force its way between your teeth and become very hard to remove, which promotes tartar buildup. Dried Fruit Much like candy, dried fruit is packed with sugar and can be very sticky. It can easily lodge between your teeth and stay there until you brush or floss. Dried fruit can be a good snack, but it’s best to find snack foods lower in sugar and higher in nutritional value, such as raw vegetables, including bell peppers, broccoli, and cucumbers. Cheese is also a good snack option. Refer a friend, get a brighter smile!

We love to snack. Unfortunately, many snack foods are not compatible with healthy teeth and strong enamel. There are several foods we need to watch out for — foods that can do more harm than good. Here are five popular examples. Nuts Many types of nuts, like almonds and pecans, are packed with nutrition but can be very hard on your teeth. This is especially true of raw nuts. Almonds, for example, are often cited as being a healthy midmorning snack, but because of their relative hardness and pointed shape, they can cause real damage to your teeth. Instead, opt for sliced almonds or roasted nuts (which are slightly softer) if this is your snack of choice — or skip them altogether. Ice While not a food, many people have a habit of nibbling on ice while enjoying a cool beverage. Unfortunately, this habit can be severely damaging to your teeth. Ice can wear down your enamel and it has been known to chip teeth. This is one habit to avoid!
