Un honneur

The Mayor’s Tragedy Watching Clarence Rockland’s Commit- tee of the Whole meeting held in Bourget on August 6th was a déjà vu experience; like watching an old episode of “Spin City”, a sitcom premised on a mayor and his aides “spinning” their version of the truth to citi- zens in order to hang on to power.

minds is ratcheting up. Remember all of this when you step into the ballot box a year from now. I for one will cast my support be- hind those four councillors whose actions are not tainted by the shroud of an OPP in- vestigation. Our local politics, like any good play should be about honesty, ethics and morality - not petty vindictiveness, repre- hensible ethics, and vacuous leadership. Unless you are willing to be satisfied with another 4 year “encore” of the same drama, it is time for the silent majority to step up and be counted!

What we have in Clarence Rockland is far from a comedy; it is a tragedy of monumen- tal proportions. It is the story of a mayor us- ing a council meeting in the same way he uses the city’s web site - as a personal pul- pit to spin his version of the truth to justify reposting the infamous July 12th papers in the “Gatien Affair” and to continue waging his vindictive little war against the city’s for- mer Director General, Daniel Gatien. What a shameful display of leadership! That of course is only Act 1, serious to be sure, but one that is part of a much larger ongoing OPP investigation that will unfold in due course. Remember that fact - those who are at this moment under investiga- tion are mostly the very same “new regime” claiming the moral high ground of working in your best interests while at the same time pointing their fingers at those untainted “old guard” councillors as the obstruction- ists. What utter nonsense! Attend just one council meeting and make up your own minds about who the obstructionists are. Act 2 of this play is pre-election posturing and the gauntlet has been dropped. Mayor Guibord is doing his best to eliminate the competition and deflect the public’s view away from the criminal allegations he and some of his colleagues are under as the OPP investigation nips at their heels. His efforts to marginalize Councillors Serrurier, Payer, Desjardins and Thivierge have left them no choice but to resign their committee re- sponsibilities on council in a final desperate act of protest against the mayor’s actions – and that suits the mayor just fine. It seems to have been his game plan all along to remove the dissenters as what he really ap- pears to want on council are more bobble- heads who will agree to his every wish. This is far from the clan war the mayor is trying to portray. It’s a morality play being orches- trated by our mayor using, in my opinion, reprehensible ethics to win back his seat for the next election by isolating, marginaliz- ing or removing four good and decent men who truly have the best interests of the city at the core of their being. The final act of this little drama is about to unfold and each citizen of Clarence Rock- land must have a supporting role in how the end is scripted. In fact, it is each citizen’s civic duty to assume a starring role in the outcome of this play which carries with it all of the themes befitting a true Shakespear- ean tragedy. Before the curtain drops ask yourself if our city is better off today than it was three years ago? Imagine the time and energy this mayor and his allies have wasted on infighting against four good men and on the “Gatien Affair” when our city has so many other pressing and obvi- ous needs. Imagine what could have been accomplished if all this foolish effort and vindictiveness by the mayor and his allies on council had been used to actually bet- ter our city. Imagine where we might be if he had spent all this time actually “leading”, which I assume is a large part of his job de- scription. We really deserve better and it starts at the top. Election time is around the corner but the battle for our hearts and
