Hello to our Lakes families,
13
What ’ s on @ The Lakes
I hope that everyone was able to enjoy some quality time as a family over the holidays and you are enjoying our current sunny weather. Fourth terms are always very busy times for schools with end of year activities and lots of planning and organisation for the next year happening as well. Looking at our school calendar over the next few weeks highlights this and demonstrates that we have hit the ground running. Pace yourself and if any issues arise, please get in touch with me at school. Our home/school partnerships are one of our greatest strengths here at The Lakes. A massive congratulations to Aimee and our Performing Arts team for the Performing Arts Showcase last week. Our students did an unbelievable job showing our school values and for a lot of the students, their first time on stage. Lakes Legends!!!! We have had some staff changes to start Term 4. We wish Mrs Comito all the best as she has started her maternity leave and have been extremely lucky to welcome Miss Nikoloska to the Year 2 team. As some of you may be aware, Mr Brooke has welcomed a baby girl, Ruby at the end of last term. Liam is taking some time to be a dad and will return to The Lakes to start next year. In the meantime, we have been very fortunate to have Darrel join the Year 4 team across the past few weeks. On our Secondary Campus, we welcome Cham Wickramasinghe who has commenced in a Secondary Science position, and Jackson Balazsy who has joined our Education Support team. Welcome to The Lakes. In some other staffing news, it comes with some sadness but a great deal of pride that we let our families know that Dylan Ross has been successful in gaining a Leading Teacher promotion position at Northern School of Autism in 2025. Dylan has led SWPBS this year and been the Team Leader in Year 6. Dylan has a clear passion for disability and inclusion programs and will be a wonderful acquisition for the leadership team at NSA. Congratulations Dylan on a huge achievement. In the same vein, Amanda Allan has been successful in gaining a teaching position at Kilmore Primary School in 2025 which reduces her travel time to work. Amanda has been a fantastic classroom teacher, instrumental in leading curriculum change at The Lakes with the literacy leader ’ s initiative and more recently apart of our PLC team in 2024. Amanda will be an awesome addition to her new school. As a College, it looks like we will be very fortunate from a staff perspective in 2025 with most staff returning and a full book of staff to start the year. Staffing across Victorian schools continues to be a major issue/concern with a lot of classroom positions unable to be filled. We continue to be one of the very few schools that continue to buck the trend in this area.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT
A reminder that in Terms 1 and 4, students need to be wearing hats outside at recess and lunch. This needs to be a school logo wide brim hat to be inline with the Department of Education SunSmart policy. If you don ’ t have one or it has gone missing, please speak to our Uniform Shop to purchase another one. If students do not have a hat, they will be asked to play undercover during break times. You would have by now noticed our new addition to our school with the installation of our double basketball court. It has been wonderful seeing students and staff using the space during lunch breaks and in class time. We will continue to add features to the space to make it more user friendly with paths, possible seating and grass areas to make it more accessible and inviting. On the topic of facilities, leadership have continued in conjunction with School Council to upgrade and modify several inside and outside spaces. This has been a 2 year process and I am happy to say that we are coming to the end of these priorities. A lot of planning, budgeting and speaking with staff, students and families have happened across the past 12 - 15 months to turn these priorities into reality. I hope our school community is as proud of our school as what we are. Below is a rundown of projects that have been completed over the past 24 months.
R U OK?
At the end of last term, The Lakes Community (students and adults) celebrated and highlighted R U OK? Day. Thank you to everyone for engaging in and supporting this important topic. Our hope is that everyone continues through the year to check in on their loved ones, friends and teammates and ask, R U OK?
To remind us all, here is a simple conversation map.
Ask R U OK? It ’ s best to pick a quiet time when you ’ re alone with them if you can, not in front of everyone. Approach them in a relaxed and friendly way, it doesn ’ t have to be a big deal, just a casual conversation. If they say they don ’ t want to talk right now, see if they want to talk another time, or ask if there ’ s someone else they ’ d like to talk to for support. Listen: Listening is the thing that can make the biggest difference for someone who needs help. It can be tempting to rush or change the subject. It can also be hard to hear that one of your friends is sad or is struggling – but remind yourself that by listening, you are making a difference. Remember that silence is ok too – you can just sit or walk together. Give the person some space and quiet so they can find the words to express what they ’ re going through. Encourage Action: Once they ’ ve shared why they are sad, worried or angry, you might suggest to them that they think about one small step they might be able to take. You don ’ t have to have all the answers, and it can be good to encourage them to share how they ’ re feeling with an adult they trust. This could be a teacher, coach, parent, instructor, or staff member. Sometimes, just talking can help them feel better. Check In: After the conversation make sure you don ’ t ignore what happened - keep checking in. It ’ s important to continue showing care so that they continue feeling supported and so they know they can always come to you if they feel that way again.

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
TRANSITION 2025
As we begin the term, I thought that I would outline more details about our Transition Program for 2025. The aim of the program is to ensure that every child feels more confident about next year by removing some of the unknowns before the end of this year! Our on - going Transition program includes our Year 5&6 students spending time on our Secondary Campus throughout the year during 5/6 Sport, Special Events and use of the amazing facilities our Secondary Campus offers. This is on top of the Statewide Year 6 Transition Day that happens throughout the state on Tuesday 10th December for all students in Year 7, 2025. This is a day where students will experience different subjects and teaching styles and moving to different areas of the school for lessons as they start to get a feel for what next year might have in stall! Our 2025 Prep Transition Program also continues following on from our very successful “ Experience The Lakes ” sessions. These commence on Wednesday 6th November, continue over 4 weeks and will be run by our Prep 2025 team. There will also be parent sessions running on the 6th and 13th of November starting at 9.30am for any parents who would like to hear more about our programs here at The Lakes. Thank you to Clare for all the hard work she has done to visit our local Kindergartens and speaking with families about this important milestone in our little people ’ s lives.
YEAR 2 REFLECTION YEAR 2 SRC
This week, we ’ re really excited to share our thoughts about the new basketball courts that have just opened on our Primary Campus! As Year 2 students, we love playing basketball during recess and lunch, and these new courts make it even more fun. First, the courts are bright and colourful, which makes them super awesome. We ’ ve already noticed more of our friends wanting to play basketball, and it ’ s great to see everyone having fun together. The new space means we have more room to practice our shots and play games without bumping into each other. The markings on the courts help us understand where to shoot and where to stand during games. It feels like we ’ re real basketball players! Along with the new courts, we ’ re really excited that Zooper Dooper Fridays are starting back up! On the first Friday, SRC students raised over $250! The money we raise helps us plan fun activities and projects. Overall, we ’ re really thankful for the new basketball courts and the return of Zooper Dooper Fridays. We can ’ t wait to make more amazing memories playing with my friends.
TERM 4 PRIMARY ASSEMBLY TIME
Our Friday assemblies will continue to be held in the last session (from 2:30pm) in our gym. These will run fortnightly across even weeks of the term. As a school, we are looking for feedback from our parent community as to the best time for our Primary Assemblies to be held with the possibility that from 2025, these may be held on Monday mornings. Please come and speak with me and share your thoughts. Please note, that l will be taking some Long Service Leave over the next few weeks. For any issues or concerns, please speak with Mr Zull, Mr McLean or Ms Sutton in my absence. I look forward to connecting back with you when I return to finish off an exceptional year. Thank you to everyone who has supported the school ’ s growth and improvement so far this year! We look forward to the continued support for the rest of the year.
YEAR 12 REFLECTION YEAR 12 STUDENTS
During Term 4 the year 12 cohort had their final weeks of classes where we have been completing course work and preparing for our final exams. We had Spirit Week where we had a different theme for each day including Pyjama Day, Anything but a backpack and come dressed as the first letter of your name. We are looking forward to our final day of Secondary school Celebration Day where we will have a breakfast with the staff and then go to 10 Pin bowling and Lazer Tag followed by a lunch. Following this celebration we will be studying for our final exams and getting ready to move into the next stage of our lives including full time work, apprenticeships, university or other tertiary studies.
Have a wonderful week.
Marcus
The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter SCHOOL COUNCIL
Hello Lakes families,
Firstly, a huge congratulations to our Year 12s for finishing their last day of formal classes this week, and well done to all their parents/carers who have supported them in their education journey. Finishing secondary education is a huge achievement in itself and best of luck to all of our students, regardless of the pathway they have chosen going forward, whether it be sitting exams for an ATAR score; pursuing other training/higher ed options; or employment. Best of luck to our Year 11s who begin their exams too. You will have all received an email regarding our Colour Run! This is an amazing initiative organised by our SRC and will bring together our two campuses again for a united event and most importantly though, it is about having fun together as a school! Please support the SRC by either encouraging your child to participate, raising funds for items for the school requested by the students themselves; attending on the day to cheer our students on or by being a volunteer helper. Last year ’ s inaugural event was a blast and it would be good to have just as successful a year this year! Well done also to everyone involved with the College ’ s second Curtain Call night last week. Everyone did an amazing and fabulous job. Similarly, to our bi - yearly Performing Arts Showcase, the night not only showcases our school ’ s talented students, but there is also the intangible benefit that it brings both Campuses together as a united school and boosts school pride, all of which align with the core areas of our school ’ s Strategic Plan. It is great to have this now cemented as a regular event. In school facilities news, our 2024 program of facility upgrades is now completed. The most recent upgrades being air - conditioning being installed in to the classrooms on Primary, the creation of a professional development space in the Learning Street on Primary and commencement of painting the exterior walls of the gym on Secondary, with quotes now obtained.
Our Fundraising Subcommittee ’ s next activity will be a raffle at Primary ’ s Night Under the Stars event in December. There will be some great prizes to be won just in time for school holidays including accommodation at a city hotel and mini golf at Yarrambat Golf Park. The team are also planning another Welcome Back BBQ to be held on Friday 7 February 2025. This will be another opportunity to bring everyone together to welcome new families and reunite after the 6 - week break.
In other news, at School Council ’ s most recent meeting on 22 October, we:
Endorsed Curriculum Charges for 2025;
•
Brainstormed a list of improvement projects across both campuses for 2025; and
•
Endorsed the purchase of interactive screens to be installed into classrooms on Primary for innovative teaching.
•
Endorsed expenditure for the 2025 Welcome BBQ.
•
Endorsed 2025 Term Dates, including Curriculum Days.
•
As always, if you have any issues, ideas or questions that you would like raised at our next Council meeting, or any other support, please feel free to send me an email to amanda.farrelly@education.vic.gov.au. Our last meeting for 2024 will be on Tuesday 19 November. Visitors and observers are always welcome!

WHOLE - SCHOOL SEMESTER 2 PERFORMING ARTS SHOWCASE
On Wednesday 16th October, The Lakes South Morang College presented our second whole - school Performing Arts Showcase ‘ Curtain Call ’. All students worked very hard this Semester to get their performances ready for the evening and each item showcased the excitement and pride each student felt. For my Year 10 Elective class I chose Music and for our assignment we had a choice of learning a song and performing it. I chose to form a band. My band made a collective decision to perform “ We Will Rock You ”. At first we had some trouble learning our parts and playing together. We had a term to learn it but for the first few weeks we were messing around a bit and having fun. Half way through we had mastered it and we could perform it well. Time flew past and it had come up to the day we had to perform. A lot of us were a bit nervous and we had to do a few practices at the stage to make sure everything was right. We first played in front of our peers and friends where we had a few issues but they were all sorted before the show. When it was time to perform, I was nervous. This was the first time I had played in front of a very large crowd. Walking on stage was an experience, but when I sat down at my chair and got ready it was amazing and I had fun. I was smiling and laughing the whole time with all my friends. It was fun learning and playing with a band, it was a great experience. – Lucas M, Year 10 Firstly, I would like to state that every grade including Prep, Year 3, and Year 6 made an amazing effort to keep the audience entertained. They were OUTSTANDING! When the Prep ’ s came on stage, they all had smiling faces and with the extra help from the High School for their performance. I even enjoyed coming on stage myself, it was a once in a lifetime experience and everyone performing was SUPERB! It was amazing seeing children enjoying the stage and I bet the audience LOVED IT! My overall experience has to be 5 stars. It was really nice to see the children behaving when they were waiting for their turn to perform. You must be asking what was my favourite performance? Well, my favourite performance had to be the Time Warp. I loved how everyone was on stage performing and younger levels were listening to teachers for their positions. Overall I think it was BREATHTAKING!!
You were A - S - T - O - N - I - S - H - I - N - G! – Anitej S, Year 6
I was a little bit worried while I waited for my turn to perform. But I got to pair up with my friend and he helped me stay confident. He encouraged me to be brave and then when we danced together I felt ok dancing in front of everyone. Isaac M, Year 3

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter TEACHING & LEARNING
Teaching and Learning at The Lakes is based on a basic premise, High Expectations. Teachers and students alike are constantly planning, learning and reflecting on how to work towards their utmost best.
However, the journey doesn ’ t have a final destination where we can ease back and relax. As professionals we continue to actively seek opportunities for continued improvement. With the introduction of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 and Victorian Curriculum 2.0 in 2025 we have new opportunities for renewal and reinvigoration of our current practices. Staff have spent Terms 3 and 4 familiarising themselves with the new Curriculum content and planning for both implementation and assessment in 2025. Additionally, teacher professional learning and practices will be focused on learning and improving each of the elements of the Teaching and Learning Model.
We have achieved some amazing results this year across a range of data sources. These include:
•
NAPLAN
•
VCE results
•
Student attitude to school survey (ATOSS)
•
Parent Opinion Survey
•
Staff Opinion Survey
These results have been achieved through the implementation of a range of programs and approaches including:
•
Learner Coaches and the Learner Agency hour on the Primary Campus
•
The Tutor Learning Program across the College and the MYLNS program at Year 10
•
The VIA program from Years 7 to 10
•
A continued focus on the teaching of explicit phonics on the Primary Campus.
•
Teacher professional development covering a diverse range of areas such as ‘ Planning for Achievement and Growth ’, ‘ Cognitive Load Theory and it ’ s implications for classroom teaching ’ and ‘ Identifying and Planning for High Ability student learning ’. Cross Campus Learning walks for all staff with a focus on how explicit teaching is used in different year levels and subject areas. Professional Learning Communities where Learning Areas and Year levels use a range of data to identify a problem of practice, research new ways to approach this question and finally implement and monitor practices for success with a view to continual improvement. The roll out of the new Disability Inclusion program and its implications for students who need assistance to access learning equally due to a wide range of challenges. The use of Compass for Reporting and Assessment purposes. This enables assessments and feedback to students and families in a timely manner so that Learners can become active, knowledgeable participants in their learning journey.
