The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT
A reminder that in Terms 1 and 4, students need to be wearing hats outside at recess and lunch. This needs to be a school logo wide brim hat to be inline with the Department of Education SunSmart policy. If you don ’ t have one or it has gone missing, please speak to our Uniform Shop to purchase another one. If students do not have a hat, they will be asked to play undercover during break times. You would have by now noticed our new addition to our school with the installation of our double basketball court. It has been wonderful seeing students and staff using the space during lunch breaks and in class time. We will continue to add features to the space to make it more user friendly with paths, possible seating and grass areas to make it more accessible and inviting. On the topic of facilities, leadership have continued in conjunction with School Council to upgrade and modify several inside and outside spaces. This has been a 2 year process and I am happy to say that we are coming to the end of these priorities. A lot of planning, budgeting and speaking with staff, students and families have happened across the past 12 - 15 months to turn these priorities into reality. I hope our school community is as proud of our school as what we are. Below is a rundown of projects that have been completed over the past 24 months.
R U OK?
At the end of last term, The Lakes Community (students and adults) celebrated and highlighted R U OK? Day. Thank you to everyone for engaging in and supporting this important topic. Our hope is that everyone continues through the year to check in on their loved ones, friends and teammates and ask, R U OK?
To remind us all, here is a simple conversation map.
Ask R U OK? It ’ s best to pick a quiet time when you ’ re alone with them if you can, not in front of everyone. Approach them in a relaxed and friendly way, it doesn ’ t have to be a big deal, just a casual conversation. If they say they don ’ t want to talk right now, see if they want to talk another time, or ask if there ’ s someone else they ’ d like to talk to for support. Listen: Listening is the thing that can make the biggest difference for someone who needs help. It can be tempting to rush or change the subject. It can also be hard to hear that one of your friends is sad or is struggling – but remind yourself that by listening, you are making a difference. Remember that silence is ok too – you can just sit or walk together. Give the person some space and quiet so they can find the words to express what they ’ re going through. Encourage Action: Once they ’ ve shared why they are sad, worried or angry, you might suggest to them that they think about one small step they might be able to take. You don ’ t have to have all the answers, and it can be good to encourage them to share how they ’ re feeling with an adult they trust. This could be a teacher, coach, parent, instructor, or staff member. Sometimes, just talking can help them feel better. Check In: After the conversation make sure you don ’ t ignore what happened - keep checking in. It ’ s important to continue showing care so that they continue feeling supported and so they know they can always come to you if they feel that way again.
