Volk Packaging’s Derek Volk Publishes ‘Go For Third’ BY LEN PRAZYCH With a deft “stroke of the pen” and a few thousand clicks on a comput- er keyboard, Derek Volk, CEO of Biddeford, Maine based Volk Packag- ing Corporation, published his latest book, “Go For Third: Leadership Lessons from the Softball Field to the Workplace.” Coincidentally – or not – the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers began last week what is destined to be one of the most competitive World Series matchups in years. While the lessons Volk imparts in a breezy read of 44 short chapters grew out of his experiences coaching his daughters’ softball teams at multiple levels for 20 years, the concepts and “Action Plans” he pres-
IP Laying Off Hundreds, Closing Plants In Four States Memphis, Tennessee based International Pa- per (IP) will be laying off hundreds of workers in connection with plant closures in Illinois, Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee. The disclosure comes on the heels of 650 layoffs at its headquarters and a plant in Texas. IP filed a WARN notice with the state of Ten- nessee on October 21 disclosing the perma- nent closure at their facility in Cleveland, Ten- nessee, with 115 workers affected. There are no bumping rights since the clo- sure is permanent. “The plan is that the machines and associ- ated operations will permanently shut down by the middle of December 2024,” the state- ment read. “The first employees will begin terminating employment on or about December 16.” The North Carolina WARN notice indicat- ed the permanent closure of an IP container plant in Statesville affecting 74 employees. IP confirmed the closure of a Kansas City, Missouri facility, laying off 150 workers and an unspecified number of employees at a plant soon to close in Rockford, Illinois, according to media reports. Many lessons would be rele- vant to the managers of a ma- jor league baseball team try- ing to get the most from their “heavy hitters,” and certainly, to the owners and managers of a box making company do- ing business in the ultra-com- petitive North American cor- rugated and folding carton industries. Volk is no rookie to the world of box making or pub- lishing. He began his career as a sales manager in his family’s sheet plant operation more than 30 years ago and with retirements of his father

E-Commerce Packaging Market Driven By Environmental Concerns Retail e-commerce sales of merchandise are forecast to grow 8.9 percent per year to $1.4 trillion in 2028, accord- ing to “U.S. e-Commerce Ready Packaging Market 2024- 2033,” issued by ResearchAndMarkets.com. This represents a slowdown from the high levels seen during the pandemic, but it is still well above growth in overall retail sales and most sectors of the US economy. However, the continued expansion of home delivery is having opposing impacts on the packaging industry and the types and amount of packaging used. E-commerce continues to have a profound impact on the packaging industry as companies adapt to the rapid shift from traditional retail models focused on brick-and-
mortar stores and centralized distribution to one that in- cludes online shopping and delivery direct to customer’s front doors. This shift toward home delivery is leading to significant changes in operations, infrastructure, and logis- tics at companies throughout the supply chain. The continuing robust growth of e-commerce has raised concerns about its environmental impact, particu- larly regarding carbon emissions from transportation and the large amount of packaging waste generated. Consum- er product manufacturers, retailers, and parcel shipping companies are all looking for more sustainable practices that optimize packing and delivery, reduce the amount of shipping materials used, and include the development new eco-friendly and delivery-compatible options. Demand for traditional e-commerce related packaging - primarily shipping boxes, mailers and associated protec- tive packaging materials - is forecast to grow 6.4 percent
per year to $8.5 billion in 2028, lagging growth in e-commerce sales due to con- tinued efforts to reduce the use of excess shipping materials. The shipment of Ships in Own Contain- er (SIOC) packages will continue to see double-digit growth over the next decade, reaching 6 billion units in 2028. While a small share of packages have historically been shipped in their own packaging, ef- forts to reduce packaging waste and im- prove profitability will continue to drive this shift away from traditional materials. While the shift toward online shopping was well underway by 2020, the pandem- ic significantly accelerated it; there were sharp spikes in online purchasing in 2020 and 2021. Since then, some consumers have started to return to their pre-pan- demic habits and preferences, resulting in a drop from the unusually high levels of online shopping. On the other hand, there are customers that have continued to rely on online shop- ping; their behaviors will have an important effect on the need for e-commerce ready packaging. Factors driving consumers to remain online shoppers include continuing closures of brick-and-mortar retail stores, which can significantly limit the availability of items that would have been purchased at those stores. But there are reasons for shoppers to return to brick-and-mortar stores, including the desire to support lo- cal businesses, the difficulty of dealing with numerous shipping boxes and pack- aging waste, a preference for picking out items in person, the difficulty or cost in returning items that are not wanted, and concerns about the environmental impact.

Thirty-six students across grades 9-12 in the Manufacturing, Production, and Green Technology (MPGT) Acade- my, Ceres High School’s award-winning career and technical education program, visited PSC to tour the plant floor, hear from current corrugated packaging employees, and engage in a hands-on competition using cor- rugated point-of-purchase displays. and educational institutions nationwide to open their doors to students, parents, educators, and community leaders, fostering an in-depth under- standing of the rewarding and high-paying careers available in modern manufacturing. During the event, students connected their technical education coursework with examples of real-world production, maintenance, engi- neering, and innovation on the plant floor. They were also reminded of the role corrugated products play in our everyday lives and the ability of corrugated to provide appeal to consumers while interacting with point- of-purchase displays. Most importantly, students heard directly from PSC team members about the value of an industry career and the rewarding nature of working for an industry that prioritizes their employees, the planet, and their customers. “At PSC, we know that thriving in our industry takes more than ma- chines. It takes a focused group of women and men who are dedicated to our values: 360˚ Health, Teamwork, Quality, and Sustainability,” said Trenton Mayol, President & CEO at PSC. A Ceres High School Academy student in attendance who is also a member of the MPGT, said: “It’s all really intricate, which is something I didn’t expect to see at a box factory. You don’t really think that a lot is going to go into making boxes, but it’s a lot of different steps. We learned that you really play with the geometry (of a box) and that interests me.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Kevin Schannauer, the offset pressroom manager for Grafika Print, says they have experienced increased pro- duction since integrating the Sentinel ink system on their Koenig & Bauer Rapida 106 X into their operations. “The system has not only reduced ink waste and wash-up times, but it has also ensured that colors remain consis- tent and free from contamination. This is largely due to the minimal amounts of fresh ink maintained in the fountains. Additionally, the ability to track ink usage on a job-to-job basis has proven invaluable for our workflow. The service and support from Sentinel has been exceptional, making this equipment a must-have in our high-speed production environment,” Schannauer said. “Our customers depend on us to produce vivid, eye-catching packaging on our new Koenig & Bauer Rap- ida 106 seven-color UV press,” says Wade Holbrook, who owns International PaperBox, a 65-employee Utah busi- ness along with his wife Kay. “Having the Sentinel ink man- agement system on our press has supported total color consistency and productivity as well as reduced our labor and waste costs. It’s been a game-changer.” Andy Morris, Senior Vice President of Cartons and Labels at the Jones Healthcare Group, headquartered in Canada, they have a Sentinel ink management system on each of their Koenig & Bauer Rapida presses. “Our biggest benefit is its time savings. Hall of Fame that he came up with the idea for his induc- tion speech, “Everything I Know About Business I Learned from Coaching Girls Softball,” and the idea for his book. Volk had more than enough content for his 10-minute speech and as it turns out, the outline for the book to which he was unknowingly about to give birth. “When the speech was uploaded on social media, I was overwhelmed with positive responses. Quite a few people said to me, ‘You should write a book about that,’ and so I did,” he relates in the introduction of “Go For Third.” He adds that he wrote the book not with the intention of gain- ing more credibility but to empower others and share leadership lessons he learned on his journey of discovery as a business own- er and as a softball coach. Another home run. Take Risks Those watching this year’s World Series will probably have heard the phrase, “Go For Third,” more than once during the broadcast. What may not be articulated by the game’s announcer, however, is the line upon which Volk “bases” his motivational premise: “Go For Third, Even When It’s a Risk,” which also happens to be the title of Chapter 1. Writes Volk, “Taking a few risks will cause you less stress and eliminate your chance of failure or looking like a fool, but it also destroys your ability to do something amazing. Don’t live in fear. Go for third base!” He rational- izes: the worst thing that will happen is that in a softball game you will get thrown out, which could be considered the equivalent of losing a sale at the box plant. “Either way, you can rest in the knowledge that you gave it your best shot and you’ll go on to fight another day. I would much rather see my player or employee fail while trying to do something special than sit back safely and always be average, accomplishing nothing more than getting by.” Volk’s “Action Plan” for the book’s opening chapter involves doing an in-depth analysis regarding where an owner and his or her company can take more risks. It asks the questions: Where and why are you losing sales? What employees seem afraid to make decisions due to a fear of failure? What piece of equipment do you know you need but have been too cautious about pulling the trigger on buying? Is there a person you feel confident would be a great asset to your business but have been too scared to approach? Answer those questions and then make your competitors beat you as you go for third. Without giving away “too much of the plot” here, read- ers of Volk’s new book on leadership will benefit from his lessons on every phase of the game, from “Keep Your Eye on the Ball” (Chapter 6), to “Don’t Swing a Bat That’s Too Heavy” (Chapter 14), to “Sometimes It’s Best to Stick Your Superstar in Right Field,” (Chapter 36), to “An Accurate Derek Volk

250,000 SF Akers Packaging

Throw Late is Better Than a Wild Throw on Time” (Chapter 37). Some of the Volk’s leadership lessons may seem like he is “preaching to the choir,” that is, if the choir is full of his peers and readers of Board Converting News – very successful owners of corrugated and folding carton com- panies who are undoubtedly leaders in their own right – but what successful owner isn’t willing to say he or she can’t learn one more valuable lesson that may improve their company or their leadership skills? For example, consider Volk’s “Action Plan” at the end of “Think of Your Players First” (Chapter 30): Block out 10 time slots of at least 30 minutes in your calendar over the next month. Have one-on-one meetings, ideally out of the office over a meal, to ask 10 people on your team, “What can I do to help you?” Then the real challenge starts: shut up and listen! As best-selling author and professional speaker John Brubaker so eloquently writes in the foreword, “Derek Volk’s book will challenge you to take a long hard look at the way you lead and will cause you to see things through a different lens. And that’s precisely the point: In order to achieve a level of success you haven’t had before, you have to be willing to lead at a higher level than you ever have before.” So like New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, or Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, grab your highlighter, a pen and some paper to take notes – you’ll certainly have time between the seemingly endless com- mercial breaks strategically built into every World Series game – and get ready to show your players that you’ve got their backs and have all the bases covered. Play ball! Visit volkboxes.com for more information or amazon. com to order “Go For Third: Leadership Lessons from the Softball Field to the Workplace.”
