In the height of the first wave of the pandemic in Victoria (March-June), Housing Choices partnered with some amazing support services to put together the Darebin Food Sharing Program. These meals are being provided by Food Share, a community organisation that rescues surplus food that would otherwise be wasted. Their motto is 'Rescue, Cook, Feed.' The program was able to deliver 1290 nutritious meals, 520 pastries and 110 desserts to 92 households across 47 properties. In such dicult times, it was a ray of hope to see so much good will and community spirit. The amazing work could not have been made possible without the help of The Bridge, Food Share, Reservoir Neighbourhood House, and Rotary Preston. For six weeks, sta from all teams across the business volunteered their time to pack, sort and deliver food parcels to our tenants who live in Darebin.
It was a highly successful program, with residents commenting:
Our residents may be experiencing diculties at this time due to reduced incomes, reduced ability to access the community, reduced availability or price rises on fresh produce or other health and wellbeing impacts. In the first month of the program HCA sta collected, packed and delivered over 600 nutritious, pre-cooked frozen meals to support our residents at over 60 dierent addresses.
