Conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Effects, possible solutions and the role of the Federal Republic of Germany For nearly 30 years, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been plagued by violence — resulting in millions of deaths, systematic sexual violence, and war crimes. The conflict is driven by ethnic tensions and the illegal exploitation of valuable resources such as coltan, cobalt, gold, and diamonds, which neighboring coun tries like Rwanda benefit from. These materials are exported to Europe, China, and the Gulf states. In this seminar, we will examine the causes, dynamics, and international entanglements of the conflict and engage with experts to explore Germany’s responsibilities and interests in a region whose stability is in creasingly vital in light of global crises, migration, and economic potential. Das Horn von Afrika gilt als chronisch instabile Region und als Spielball konkurrierender Groß- und Mittelmächte. Dennoch keimen immer wieder Hoffnungen auf Stabilisierung. Die stra tegisch bedeutsame Lage macht das Gebiet sicherheits- und wirtschaftspolitisch relevant für Europa – zugleich verdichten sich hier globale Herausforderungen wie Klimawandel oder autoritäre Entwicklungen. Trotz jahrelanger internationaler, auch deutscher Präsenz schwindet die Aufmerksamkeit für die komplexen Entwicklungen und ihre humanitären Folgen. Das Seminar beleuchtet das Zusammenspiel globaler, regionaler und lokaler Dynamiken – und rückt dabei auch Perspektiven lokaler Akteure in den Fokus.
