Not Paul, with his "falling away" and his "perilous times;" not Peter, with his "last day scoffers" and reservation "of fire;" not James, with his "cankered gold;" not Jude, with his "wandering stars" and "blackness of darkness." On the mount of Olives He predicted "tribulations," "wars and tumults," TO THE END. present eyjl a g e" is essentially such; Satan is its, lord; its seat is " in the wicked one;" its spirit " i s enmity against God." That which is essentially evil can- not beget good; that which is inimical to God cannot be reconciled. The ground on which that optimism bases its confidence is treacherous, for the "peace and safety" it boasts are the very harbingers of the doom it deprecates (I Thes. 5:3). Against it we hold a biblical and invincible op- timism. This is " t h e best kind of a world," for "all things work together for good to them that love God." The dark, dark story of these ages vindicates the " p e s s i m i sm" of Jewish prophets in their age, and of the Christian apostles in our own.. All came to pass as they had said; all is now. as was predicted. These facts alone are a firm foundation for a sure and biblical optimism. The course of Provi- dence in the light of prediction proves that. God rules. Fulfilled • thread seals un- fulfilled promise. All shall come to pass, in due time; not through an evolution of good out of evil, of light out of darkness, but by a "new creation" and. a rising Sun. We are optimists of the true school. Buoyantly, bravely we pursue our pilgrim and militant way; sharing our wallet, re- sisting evil; hoping to the end; "while BIBLICAL The realization of that blind OPTIMISM, optimism is in the nature of the case impossible. But nowhere has God promised to brighten up this age. Whatever of betterment in social and eco- nomic conditions may come, will be not of promise, but of ' iforebearance and long suffering" (Bom. 2:2). What awaits this age is "great tribulation, such as never was since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall b e " (Mat. 24:21). "Watch therefore, and pray al- ways, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36). Evangelical (?) pul- pits have welcomed him, and evangelical (?) ministers' associations have hastened to do him honor and seek his counsel. What says the Scripture of such? If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him »God speed (2 Jno 9, 10). But many now, called Christians and ministers, have as little regard for apostolic injunctions as for the true doc- trines of Christ, and sensibility to Truth, j. H. S. A FORBID- DEN GUEST. Dr. B. J.
