KEYSTROKE MONTHLY THE
SEPTEMBER 2021 FALL IN THE BLUEGRASS A Special Time of Year
You don’t have to travel far to see the beauty.”
Throughout my life, I have spent plenty of time traveling across America, but few destinations can compare in beauty to Kentucky. No matter what season or where you visit, there is always something fascinating to experience. While I certainly have fond memories of summer and winter, fall in Kentucky is a special time and one of my favorite seasons. The weather we experience during fall is possibly the best we experience all year, especially recently. Our fall weather never strays too far from what is expected. The season officially begins
annual Fall Meet. It’s the only other time you can see live racing at the track besides the Spring Meet in April. In my experience, I’ve found the Fall Meet to be more enjoyable for one big reason: the beautiful view of the racetrack with red and gold leaves that surround the grandstand. Visiting Keeneland is one Lexington tradition you don’t want to miss out on. Those in Louisville also get to feel the excitement of the races at Churchill Downs. Their Fall Meet begins in September and carries into the first week of October. It’s a great opportunity to experience the historic race track if you are unable to go to the Kentucky Derby. Fall also holds the bulk of the college football season. UK and Louisville fans will hopefully have much to cheer about as the season progresses. I used to play tennis with former UK football coach Jerry Claiborne. During his tenure at UK, I was enthralled by the team and rarely missed a game. It’s crazy to think how much has changed since then. While I’ve been to my fair share of tailgates, I prefer to watch the games from the comfort of my couch these days. Whether it’s people celebrating the win or drowning their sorrows, tailgate season seems to be a busy time for Pop-A-Lock. If you find yourself locked out of your car or can’t find your keys while you’re watching the Wildcats or Cardinals live, remember that we’re nearby to help. No matter what activities you enjoy, there is something for everyone during fall in the Bluegrass. Make sure you get out and experience everything our beautiful state has to offer. -Doug Barnes
on Sept. 22, but that first week or two still holds the residue leftover from the summer heat. Most years, you don’t experience everything fall has to offer until October. Whether you’re traveling by the rural farms of western Kentucky, the mountains of the eastern side of the state, or just sticking around Lexington, Louisville, and the rolling hills of central Kentucky, you’re bound to experience some beautiful sights. Most of the trees will reflect different hues of red, yellow, and orange. You don’t have to travel far to see the beauty. Many of the back roads around Lexington and Louisville provide scenic views showcasing the changing of the leaves. The vibrant colors truly take the beauty of our state to the next level.
Of course, there’s more to experience than just the beautiful scenery in fall. In Lexington, Keeneland opens back up in October for their

STICKY BUSINESS
Is Painter’s Tape More Useful Than Duct Tape?
What’s blue, sticky, and as useful as can be? If a roll of painter’s tape just sprung to mind, then you’re on the right track. Although duct tape has the reputation of being the most useful item in the world, we’re not so sure that’s the case. In fact, we’re not even sure it’s the most useful kind of tape . Blasphemy? Perhaps not. Painter’s tape lacks the adhesive qualities of duct tape as well as the fabric-style backing that gives the silver stuff its fabled strength. But here’s the honest truth about those qualities: They’re only there to let duct tape do things tape was never supposed to do. Long-term repairs? Structural support? Duct tape may be useful in a pinch, but around the house, you’re going to do a lot better with the blue painter’s tape. For one, it comes in a variety of sizes, and if you’re painting, that can be a real godsend. It’s also easy to lay flat, fold, and tuck into nooks and crannies (a quality it receives from the paper-style backing). But the real value behind painter’s tape is that it does the exact thing duct tape can’t: It goes on easily and comes off with no sticky residue left behind. That’s what makes it great for painting, but it also means it is ideal for hanging posters, putting a to-do list on the wall, or sticking a label on a jar of food.
Painter’s tape doesn’t have the sheer strength of duct tape, but that’s a feature. A few wraps of painter’s tape will keep that extension cord coiled at just the right length, but the low strength means you can easily tear it when you need the longer cord. This works with cables, hoses, ropes, and straps and is great for keeping a house organized. You can also use painter’s tape to baby-proof outlets, wrap presents, divide a room in half between two feuding kids … the list goes on! What’s your favorite use for tape? Whatever that may be, painter’s tape has you covered.
Turning Your Passion Project Into a Full-Time Job
What You Need to Know
Confucius once said, “Choose a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” These words still ring true today. During the pandemic, more people turned to companies like Etsy or YouTube in an attempt to capitalize on their side hustles. Not everyone was successful in making this transition, but those who were all followed similar methods. If you’ve been yearning to break away from the workforce to turn your passions into a full-time opportunity, here are a few tips to get you started. Think about who can help you. When you’re starting a side gig, you may feel like you need to be in full control and
take on every responsibility. This could be due to finances, or maybe you just aren’t comfortable with sharing your workload. In the beginning, you don’t need to hire full- time people. Instead, you can find people who do contract or freelance work and work with them as needed. This should remove unnecessary stress and allow you to focus on the things you need to accomplish to ensure your business is successful. Invest in yourself. You may not have the money right away for advertisements or to hire a graphic designer to make your company’s logo. However, your consumer base will notice when things are done half-heartedly, which will make them think less of your company and product.
Taking out a small-business loan can help solve these problems, but do not take out a loan just to have extra money sitting around. Have a plan in place beforehand and stick to it. You also need to be money cautious. The worst thing you can do is take out a loan and spend it all immediately. If your investments do not come back fruitful, you would be sitting in a deeper hole than before. Think about the value that expense will have before making your move. If you’re ready to turn your passion into a full-fledged job, there has never been a better time. If you spend your energy in the right places, you will see results that you never thought were possible.

KEEP YOUR CAR SAFE AT HOME Ensuring It Is Secure and Protected
Our cars are some of our most valuable assets. We rely on them to get us to and from work, the grocery store, and many other destinations. They’re also a heavy investment, as new cars cost tens of thousands of dollars. Even with all of the technological advancements cars have undergone over the last few decades, break-ins and thefts are still a common occurrence.
Here are a few extra steps you can take to ensure your car stays safe.
someone if they do get into your car. Dash cams are a great tool for insurance claims if you get into an accident, but there are also dash cams that work when your engine is off. That way, if someone breaks into your car, the camera will turn on and capture them in the act. This can be turned over to the police to help find any missing valuables. Buying a steering wheel lock can also help deter the theft of your vehicle. Not only will it take the thief an extended time to be able to drive away with your vehicle, but it will also prevent them from breaking into your car in the first place. They’re more likely to find an easier target than go through the trouble of disabling a steering wheel lock.
Hide your valuables. Ideally, you should never leave any of your valuables in your car when you’re not in it, especially if your car is sitting outside overnight. If you have no choice and have to leave electronics or other valuables in your car, ensure that they are hidden and out of view. Wrapping them up in a blanket or tucking them under the seat should do the trick. More often than not, a burglar will look into your windows before breaking into the car. If they don’t see anything worth taking, they’ll leave your car alone. Invest in a dash cam and steering wheel lock. While an experienced thief might be able to disable car alarms, there are other tools you can buy that will deter theft and help identify
Newer car security systems come with more theft-deterrent features than ever, but you can never be too protected.

MORE USEFUL THAN DUCT TAPE?!
READY TO TURN YOUR PASSION PROJECT INTO A FULL-TIME JOB? PAGE 2 ENSURE YOUR CAR IS PROTECTED AT HOME PAGE 3 WILLIE THE PARROT: THE ULTIMATE DANGER ALARM PAGE 4
Willie the Quaker parrot was a pretty remarkable bird. Like many parrots, he had a knack for mimicking certain sounds and words, including barking dog noises, human kissing noises, and a fair share of swear words. However, what made Willie a hero one day was not just what he said, but also when he said it. Meagan Howard, Willie’s owner, brought him over to her friend Samantha Kuusk’s house while she babysat Kuusk’s little daughter, Hannah. Hannah and Willie were both in the kitchen while Meagan prepared a Pop-Tart for Hannah’s breakfast. After placing the Pop-Tart on the table, Meagan stepped away to use the bathroom. Willie the Parrot: The Ultimate Danger Alarm
knew something was wrong. She rushed to the kitchen to find a very frantic Willie and a very blue Hannah. Meagan jumped into action. She grabbed Hannah and performed the Heimlich maneuver until the Pop-Tart piece dislodged itself and shot out of her mouth. Meagan may have been the one to stop Hannah from choking, but she insists that Willie was the real hero of the story. If he hadn’t used his unique mimicking skills to get Meagan’s attention, she doesn’t know what would have happened. It’s worth noting that before that incident, Willie had never used the phrase “Mama! Baby!” before. He knew something was wrong, and he knew how to get help.
While she was away, however, Hannah got her hands on the Pop-Tart and began to scarf it down,
lodging a piece in her windpipe. She started choking and was unable to signal to Meagan that something was wrong. Luckily, Willie came to the rescue.
Shortly after the incident, Willie received the local Red Cross chapter’s Animal Lifesaver Award for his heroic actions.
Willie began squawking and shrieking, saying the words “Mama! Baby!” over and over again. In a matter of moments, Meagan
