SPOTLIGHT CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF “ALMANAC”
Produced by Twin Cities PBS, “Almanac” first aired on December 7, 1984, and has since become a pioneering public affairs show that redefined the genre with its distinctive blend of balanced reporting, thoughtful analysis and signature Midwest quirkiness. Over the past 40 years, “Almanac” has provided Minnesotans with fact-based, nonpartisan journalism, offering engaging interviews and in-depth reports on critical issues affecting the state. In a time of growing political polarization, “Almanac” has remained a trusted source for both policymakers and the public, known for its commitment to civil discourse and exploration of diverse perspectives. It has earned a reputation as one of the most respected television offerings in the region, relied upon for its dedication to fostering thoughtful discussions on the most pressing topics. As noted by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, “[‘Almanac’] is a testament to…the belief that there is a place for civil discourse, there is a place for discussions of important issues, and there is a place where we can celebrate who we are and where we are at.” For four decades, “Almanac” has enriched the civic life of Minnesotans by delivering thoughtful, timely stories that educate and challenge its viewers. It stands as a pillar of public affairs television in Minnesota, continuing its tradition of trusted journalism and civil dialogue. We value TPT to keep us informed about current affairs and world issues. [TPT and PBS programs provide] a true and unbiased take on those events. – MARTHA NELSON AND ALAN KORPI, PRESIDENT’S SOCIETY MEMBERS

Storytelling That Inspires
At TPT, we leverage engaging storytelling to make an impact on our shared communities. Stories have the ability to educate, spark empathy, inspire action and drive real change. This past year, TPT brought powerful stories to life across Minnesota and beyond – tackling urgent social issues, spotlighting pivotal moments in history, igniting conversations in our communities, celebrating creativity and culture, and reaching new audiences across multiple platforms.
MINNESOTA EXPERIENCE At the start of 2024, TPT released four new “Minnesota Experience” films that center on some of the trailblazers who have shaped Minnesota in more recent history. Jesse Venture Shocks the World! To coincide with the 25th anniversary of Jesse Ventura’s inauguration as the Governor of Minnesota, we premiered “Jesse Ventura Shocks the World!” in January, a film that looks back at the origins, evolution and surprising impact of one of the most famous, infamous, unpredictable and enigmatic governors in American history.
Hope in the Struggle: The Josie Johnson Story Timed with Black History Month in February, we premiered “Hope in the Struggle,” featuring the life and work of Freedom Fighter, activist and educator Dr. Josie Johnson. Known as Minnesota’s “First Lady of Civil Rights,” Dr. Johnson fought for fair housing, education and civil rights, and she shares how her experiences turned her to activism and how the next generation is taking up the mantle. The struggle for justice and equality continues, but there is hope in the struggle.

The Electric Indian In March, TPT released “The Electric Indian,” a tribute to Ojibwe hockey legend Henry Boucha. A stand- out hockey star from Warroad, Minnesota, Boucha impressed on the ice from the 1969 Minnesota High School Hockey Tournament to the 1972 Olympics to the NHL, but an on-ice assault and injury ended his athletic career and unexpectedly led to a journey of healing and cultural reclamation. “The Electric Indian” reached audiences nationally “The Electric Indian” aired nationally 241 times on 107 channels in 49 markets . Also the film was honored with four festival film awards and/or nominations. Profe In Minnesota, the Latine community burgeons amidst a vast opportunity gap. Two charter schools, rooted in decades of struggle, champion equity through decolonized, bilingual education. Premiering in April, “Profe” delves into this educational revolution, blending history and contemporary narratives to illuminate its profound impact.
ARTS & CULTURE PROGRAMMING With a long history as a vibrant arts & culture storyteller, TPT premiered a body of work that explores the creativity of artists living with disability, Minnesota’s rich tapestry of local bands and musicians, and the power of food to understand history and heritage, and to connect community. Art + Medicine: Disability, Culture and Creativity In October 2023, TPT aired its fourth installment with the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Center for the Art of Medicine entitled “Art + Medicine: Disability, Culture and Creativity.” Hosted by beloved storyteller Kevin Kling, Professor Jessica Horvath Williams, PhD and Doctor Tsegaensh Selameab, the film centers on artists and healthcare clinicians who use stories and performances to challenges our perceptions of disability.
Key Highlight In April, “Profe” also premiered at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival.

Certain to make audiences crave a global culinary adventure right in their backyard, the series later premiered on broadcast and on YouTube in fall 2024.

Stage TPT’s third season of “Stage” premiered in October 2023 with six new episodes featuring marquee local musicians such as Dessa, Soul Asylum and Chastity Brown, who selected a band or artist they admire as an opening act. Blending propulsive live performances and storytelling from the iconic 7th St Entry stage, the show was filmed in front of a live audience of local music fans. In addition, TPT produced a YouTube series called “Backstage” that centers on conversations between the artists about their influences, how they got their start and why they admire one another. National Award Winner “Stage” was the proud recipient of the 2024 Gracie Award in the “TV-Local” category from the Alliance for Women in Media.
We have many great musicians in Minnesota, but going to live events is not very accessible. I don’t like crowds, my mom is in a wheelchair. There are many reasons that attending a concert is not an option. So getting TPT to record live concerts is a great benefit to the community and allows a more diverse audience to enjoy our local music scene.

HYPE HYPE is a youth media program that amplifies the voices of historically underrepresented high-school students and uses media-making as a pathway to self-efficacy, civic engagement, community storytelling, and post-secondary educational and career exploration. HYPE youth receive an immersive experience in media production, storytelling, leadership, communication and mentorship that shapes their personal and professional trajectories. I grew up watching PBS KIDS every day and it has always been a wonderful highlight of my childhood for me. I enjoyed watching shows and playing games on PBS KIDS like ‘SciGirls’, ‘Design Squad’ and ‘Dragonfly’. These shows have even inspired me to want to pursue a career in Biochemistry as an African-American-Somali woman. I firmly think that it was because of having these shows as a kid, it helped me see that people with my background can make it in a world of science. – SUKAYNA BARKADLE, 17-YEAR-OLD STUDENT
