In 2024, some members of the HYPE crew appeared on camera to reflect on the “American Gothic” series of photographs by Gordon Parks. Their film, titled “Gordon Parks’ American Gothic: Liberating the Voices and Visions of a New Generation,” premiered on the TPT YouTube channel on Juneteenth and was shown during the closing celebration of Minneapolis Institute of Art’s exhibit of Parks’ “American Gothic.” CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT FOR EDUCATORS In partnership with subject matter experts, TPT’s Center for Lifelong Learning team created multiple education and curriculum guides for local content in partnership with community members for “Stage,” “Hope in the Struggle: The Josie Johnson Story,” “The Electric Indian,” “Profe” and “Jesse Ventura Shocks the World!” Education staff also met with the Minnesota Historical Society to plan professional development/ activation activities for summer/fall 2024 and presented the “Stage” season 3 project at the Minnesota Music Educators Conference in February.
HYPE HYPE is a youth media program that amplifies the voices of historically underrepresented high-school students and uses media-making as a pathway to self-efficacy, civic engagement, community storytelling, and post-secondary educational and career exploration. HYPE youth receive an immersive experience in media production, storytelling, leadership, communication and mentorship that shapes their personal and professional trajectories. I grew up watching PBS KIDS every day and it has always been a wonderful highlight of my childhood for me. I enjoyed watching shows and playing games on PBS KIDS like ‘SciGirls’, ‘Design Squad’ and ‘Dragonfly’. These shows have even inspired me to want to pursue a career in Biochemistry as an African-American-Somali woman. I firmly think that it was because of having these shows as a kid, it helped me see that people with my background can make it in a world of science. – SUKAYNA BARKADLE, 17-YEAR-OLD STUDENT
