New Tools in the Arsenal: GrazonPD3 ™ Herbicide Despite the success of their existing programs, Redding and his team are always looking for more efficient and effective ways to control invasive weeds. This year, they turned to a new tool in their battle against leafy spurge: GrazonPD3 ™ , a herbicide from Corteva Agriscience. GrazonPD3 combines two well-known active ingredients—2,4-D and picloram—in a user-friendly formulation designed to increase control over difficult-to- manage weeds like leafy spurge.” // We’re excited to see if we get increased control compared to just using picloram // Redding Historically, Weston County has relied heavily on Tordon ® 22K herbicide, a picloram-based product, which has proven effective. However, when Redding learned about GrazonPD3, which combines picloram with 2,4-D choline, he saw an opportunity to improve results while potentially reducing the

environmental impact. The lower volatility of 2,4-D choline—a key ingredient in GrazonPD3—makes it safer to use in sensitive areas, especially with aerial applications where wind can spread herbicides to non-target areas. “We’re excited to see if we get increased control compared to just using picloram,” Redding noted. GrazonPD3 also offers the convenience of being a premix, reducing the need to combine different products and simplifying applications. In Weston County, where large, open areas with few trees are ideal candidates for aerial herbicide spraying, GrazonPD3 presents an exciting new option. First-Hand Experience with GrazonPD3 The Weston County team completed their first aerial application of GrazonPD3 in June 2024, covering large tracts of land with a helicopter at a rate of 64 ounces per acre. While the application went smoothly, the unpredictable Wyoming wind temporarily paused operations.

Noxious weed control with improved ease of use

GrazonPD3 ™ herbicide features • Controls 70+ weed species • Combination of picloram and 2,4-D choline o Convenient pre-mix • Lower use rate compared to Tordon ® 22k (picloram) + 2,4-D o 40-80 oz/A vs. 64-80+ oz/A • Near-zero volatility with 2,4-D choline • Reduced odor

Redding observed that the GrazonPD3 formulation was “stickier” than previous treatments, helping it adhere better in windy conditions—an essential feature for a state known for its gusty plains. As with any new product, logistical lessons were learned. The team had opted for smaller two-gallon herbicide jugs, assuming they would be easier to manage for aerial applications. Still, Redding reflected that a 250-gallon tote might have been more efficient in the future. He advises other weed management districts looking to try GrazonPD3 to consider product packaging carefully and work closely with applicators to optimize the process. Looking Ahead The fight against leafy spurge and other invasive weeds in Weston County is far from over. Still, the outlook is promising with continued cooperation between landowners and public agencies and the introduction of innovative tools like GrazonPD3.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the results and refining our approach as we go,” Redding concluded. This persistent effort ensures that the natural beauty and ecological balance of Wyoming’s landscape remain intact despite the challenges posed by invasive species.
