Word of Life Bible Institute Yearbook 2012

Becoming a man after Gods heart is so much more than just having a relationship with Christ. It’s about being a leader by being a follower. Its about never being satisfied with your walk where it is. It's about seeking Christ with every fiber of your being. The Bible Institute seeks to cultivate in young men and women that desire for more of Christ. Here at the Bible Institute, young people are forced to have a healthy environment in which to learn and to grow. It is not required simply because it is “good” for us. It is required so that we develop a personal relationship with Christ. We are called to be the leaders of the next generation, and the Bible Institute seeks to provide us with the means necessary for that task.

Word of Life’s women staff is what inspires our girls to strive to be like one day. A lot of them have gone through all the steps we are diligently taking right now....whether it be quiet times at the crack of dawn, devos while the moon is up after study hours are over and you’re exhausted or chapels every Sunday. It can be physically draining but emotionally and spiritually uplifting. Word of Life Bible Institute is training us to be women after God’s own heart, and being in the Word daily makes us long to please and praise our God. We may stray or mess up at times, but He isn’t looking for perfection; He’s looking at the process. Word of Life Bible Institute is about “perfecting” that process.

Don Lough, Jr. grew up at Word of Life and accepted Jesus Christ as Savior in 1970. Ten years later he dedicated his life to be used in full-time ministry.

He is a graduate of the Word of Life Bible Institute in 1984 and of Cedarville University where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1987. His ministry with Word of Life Fellowship began as a teenage young man working in the camps and conference programs. After graduating from seminary, he became the assistant to Paul Bubar, Director of Word

of Life’s International Ministries in 1992. Five years later he became the Vice President of International Ministries where he served from 1997 to 2006. From 2006 to 2011, Don served as Director of Word of Life Fellowship.

With more than 20 years of experience and service in the ministry, he shares the passion of those who have gone before him ... Holding Forth the Word ofLife.

Pursuing God’s heart goes far beyond a statement, a verse or a year. It pours out into every facet of life, in every encounter and in every day. One can only speak from my personal experience, and if there is one thing that is clear, it’s that this man loves the Lord. His love for the Lord is his motivation in all he does from acting as Executive Dean, teaching Bible Survey, leading a new ministry team and one of the greatest gifts God can give a man, the honor of serving Him as a husband and father. We, as a class, want to say “thank you, Mr. Strout” for the image of Christ you have shown to each and every one of us and for your love of Christ which is evident through your presence. We also want to thank you for the “video of the hour,” a much-needed laugh on many a long day!

6

Dick Dray was originally from Ohio, Go Buckeyes! But, he moved up to Pottersville where his children were born. He recently returned back to us after serving in other places and took the place of the Associate Executive Dean. He initially came to Word of Life in 1984 working in Local Church Ministries, being part of the Bible In stitute staff, teaching as a guest lecturer and more. He has done it all! Whether it is working with admis sions, alumni, accreditation, teaching or just day to day operations, he always has a positive attitude and a godly charisma. He loves his wife, Kendi, his children, Danae and J.J., and most importantly he has a great love for our Lord. We are blessed to have him and his family living on campus with us.

7

The New York campus is situated on Schroon Lake, and almost everywhere you walk you get a glimpse of it. It doesn’t get much better than waking up every morning and looking outside your window at the breathtaking views. Our winters may be bitter or some may even say sub-zero, but the beauty of the snow-covered ground and trees are worth it. You will definitely want to stick around for our perfect summer weather and colorful, lively autumn.

We dare you to find a more friendly and vibrant student body than ours here at Word of Life. Stepping onto this campus whether you are a September student or a February student, the feeling of love and being instantly welcomed is almost overwhelming. Someone is always smiling about something! Were all here for some of the same reasons....becoming more Christ-like and grounded in our faith and furthering our Fathers Kingdom.

After asking several second year students... “Why? Why do they do it? Why another year at the Bible Institue?”, I found that the answer is almost always the same. “God wasn’t through with me at Graduation. I feel called to do more, and I know second year will teach me how to do it.” One thing remains the same regard less of where we’re from.... Florida, Canada, Jeju or New York.

It is God who brought us here and the Holy Spir- itwho laid the desire in our hearts. For some of us this dedication to pur sue God’s heart through another year of studying Him at the Bible Institute wasn’t our will but it is clear that this is God’s will for us. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not upon your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths. Honestly, nothing beats trusting in God’s will for your life and all the little decisions in between now and Eternity.

We aren't just all about harvest jamborees, superbowls and Open Air Evangelism. Aside from our wild, passionate student body here at Word of Life, we offer a concrete development in God’s divine biblical truths. 1 Samuel 13:14 says, “But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, be cause you have not kept the LORD’s command.” It is our desire and prayer here at Word of Life for our young men and women to be pursuing God’s heart. When they leave here, we want them to be able to move on to their next journey with absolute assurance of their faith and to be witnesses while sharing the Gospel unashamedly.

Dear Dr. Davis,

We the students wanted to thank you! Thank you for your perseverance in teaching us the books of 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Romans, Apologetics, Theology and Zechariah. We know it gets hard sometimes, and you’ve been doing the same thing for 34 years now, but we thank you. You have faithfully dedicated to teaching each new generation the foundations of the Christian beliefs, and you do it passionately. You regale us with your many stories time and time again, even when we might not always want to hear that story a fourth time! We often times forget that you were a Bible Institute student many years ago. Thankfully, after getting your degree in Bible and Pastoral Studies at Lancaster Bible College, and your Masters in Divinity at Dallas Theological Seminary, you decided to come back.

We thank you for a great year, and hope you have many more years of teaching.

You know you love waking up at the crack of dawn to get ready to do your quiet time! Even though some of us might not enjoy having a bedtime, after the hours of homework and chapter titles we start to take advantage of lights out. When were not busy working at our service assignments or working off D- Hours, our campus is always busy and has various activities for the students and staff to enjoy....from flag football games on Friday nights, coffee houses, talent shows, to the banquet at the end of the year. We put these things together to grow more in Christ and in love as a whole student body. What's more fun than hanging out with your entire campus? Not much! Well, maybe Mobil pizza...

The resident assistant position at Word of Life Bible Institute is challening. It is far from a piece of cake! These student leaders’lives are front and center with student life. They strive to assist their classmates to spread the Word of God through discipling, implementing the rules of the handbook and being involved with activities around campus. Not only are they doing all these things to better the students, but they are also creating lifelong relationships. The roles of the Service RAs and the Dorm RAs differ. While the Dorm RAs are working on discipleship and keeping things orderly throughout the dorm, the Service RAs are leaders in the workplace. Every work assignment has a specific Service RA. The Service RAs job is to keep the workers organized, to make sure the rules are forced, to answer questions and to assign duties. Our Service RAs are also to be leaders by example. Each service RA is required to work 12-15 hours. Not only are they taking the leadership role of the workplace, but they are also using their time to form relationships and to encourage the other workers.

The Student Council is made up of 2nd year students chosen by the staff to plan events such as the banquet. They are in r charge of coming up with the themes for spirit week as well which is always a blast. They also have the privilege of choosing the acts for the talent shows. Aside from these responsibilities, they have the opportunity to reach out to other students and to encourage them to get involved.

The Bible Institute brings together people from all over the world. Rarely is this statement proven more factual than during the talent show. Many people present their different talents before the Student Council. Once they make it through the grueling process of elimination, we are left with 10 acts to judge publically as a student body. Although most of the acts were singing, it ranged through many genres. In the end, Jon South was voted the top most-talented with his rendition of “Long Black Train”. Coming in second were Pez and the Gang with their song, “WOLBI Rock Anthem.” In an unusual situation, we had a tie for third between the Lion King Quartet and the group of CJ, Jake, Ben and Chris with their original song, “You Saved Us.” All in all, it was an excellent display of talent. The Spring talent show only brought more hidden tal ent to the stage. This time around there were a lot of monologues and less music. Coming in first place was RoRo Thomas who performed a monologue, and we had another tie but this time for second place between Micah Stoudt and Sydney Dahl singing a duet and Phil Miranda and his keyboarding performance.

As the year is winding down and everyone is beginning to think about their summer ministry and what comes next, the student council was busy planning a relaxing, night under the lights for the staff and students. The theme was the based off of the 1940s. The outfits that made appearances were just swell! Everyone looked sharp! From the fantastic Jazz tunes, to the ritzy people and good food, you could say this night was the cats meow!

55

Tuesday: Cowboys vs. Indians

Friday: Medieval Times

Thursday: Hippie Day

E very student starts off the weekend with the same “I just want to get my music back attitude” and then it happens. Ric Garland teaches the first lesson and the conviction kicks in. The thought changes to “God’s not taking center stage...I am”, and the desire is no longer to conform to the trend. The focus is now to use God’s Word to guide us as to how we view things like dating. At the end of the weekend we are left with a challenge to allow God’s Word to be the standard as to how we live our lives. We leave with an overwhelming desire to surrender...the desire to surrender our relationships, our ears, our eyes and every aspect of what defines us, under God’s Divine direction.

58

They come from the four corners of the globe! They gather together once a year to share experiences, to encourage others and to prove that they’re still alive. They are the valiant men and women on the mission field. They come together for the three-day conference. During the conference, we have the opportunity to hear from some amazing men in the ministry. This year we were challenged by Nard Pugoya, Chris Gnanakan, Harry Bollback and our Chancellor, Don Lough. Missions Conference has been the beginning spark for many a student’s passion for ministering abroad. The Conference ended with a challenge to....wherever we are share the Gospel with those around us. It is only through having a completely surrendered heart that we will see others come to Christ and His kingdom furthered.

59

A time where our campus looks back at how we came to be, Founder's Conference is always full of fun, fellowship, and most of all, great times in the Word of Life itself, God's Word. We heard about Pursuing God's heart and setting up memorials from great speakers like Don Lough Jr., John Bouquet, John Barnett, and one of our founders, Harry Bollback. We saw two great men of our organization's heritage inducted into the hall of fame. We also heard amazing music from not only our Word of Life Collegians, but also Robin Jewell and the Impact Team. To end it all off, we celebrated Memorial Day and remembered those that have given their lives for our country.

Mina Strebel ~ Founders Conference: "John Barnett shared on the importance of reading God's Word and challenged us to set aside activities with no lasting value for Christ and filling it with the Scriptures. It has transformed my relationship with Christ."

Z- j*-ir**+*’'

m

Peter Ogilvie ~ Source One: "Source One has completely rewired my thinking on biblical principles. I thought I could go through life without having to think about what I believed about pertinent life sitations. After the conferene I realized how I need to put everything through the filter of God's Word. The cool thing is that God's Word is also so practical. Source One showed me that."

Josh Crouch ~ Founders Conference: I realized just how great our God works. He used average, ordinary men and women to do great things for His glory. Its a great encouragement to know that we are capable to do the same thing."

Katarina Bork ~ Missions Conference: "Missions Conference taught me that God is always faithful and trustworthy. During this conference a good friend of mine commited suicide and this conference helped me in trusting and relying on God through this hard time and to know that His will is best."

Ministry is the heart and soul of the Bible Institute. Every thing we stand for and everything we learn about is for one purpose; to prepare us for ministry out in the community of the Adirondack mountains. And then when we return home. Our whole purpose as students is to learn the Word of God and then follow it’s commands and go DO! That is exactly what the ministry opportunities give us. Everything from working in Soup Kitchens to Medical Centers to running youth groups. God has a way to use us all.

January 13th, a day that is vitally important in the scope of eternity. Why? You may ask. Because it is on this day that 370 campers, with their youth leaders came to experience Snow Camp. Over the weekend throughout the many pre sentations of the Gospel, 17 campers met Jesus as their per sonal Savior. Since then, there were another 7 weeks of Snow Camp. There were trying times, times when we felt like we couldn’t move on, and times when it felt like we weren’t mak ing a difference. Through it all, we bonded as a staff under the common goal of seeing every life touched and changed for eternity.

of Hope had the distinct privilege of teaching Sunday school, singing during the church service and participate in children’s church. Vision of Hope had the oppor tunity to attend a youth group that had never attended Snow Camp before and after getting the kids excited for Snow Camp as well as the Bible Institute, the youth pastor took this youth group up to Snow Camp during this season. How awesome to see the fruit of the seeds that were planted months prior to Snow Camp starting!

Vision of Hope had quite an over whelming task at hand as Mark Strout ventured to lead the first traveling ensemble from WOLBI NY within the last twelve years. But Becca Chambers, Becky Ziegert, Courtney McLean, Jon South, John Kimler, Kelsey Wallace and Zach Blount were ready to take on the challenge. It all started in the spring of 2011 as Mark Strout presented the undertaking to the upcoming Second years. Following a series of auditions, the eight were chosen After weeks of drama and en semble rehearsals, the team was ready to kick off their tour. Over the next ten days, the team travelled west to Buffalo, into Ohio, all the way down into West Virginia, up to Pennsylvania and finally back home to Potterville, NY. Vision

There is nothing more beauti- ful than seeing the Holy Spirit working in the midst of the body of believers. A church family in Pennsylvania was so blessed through this ministry and in turn uniquely blessed the ensemble with having sufficient funds to return home to Pottersville as well as a won- l ] • j derful dinner at Applebees! The Lord blessedthis unique ensemble with ministry opportunities that have made an impact for eternity. It is truly a privilege and an honor to minister through the venue of sing ing and drama for each member of the team. To God be the glory, for great things He hath done... and will continue to do.

72

Our Drama team is a very talented, busy group of people. All the hours they spend practicing always shows off during their performances. Whether it is during a conference, chapel, snow ip or summer camp, they always on an excellent presentation and glorifying God while they do it!

73

Word of Life's Praise Band is bursting with talent. The team includes the leader Cody Sargent, Ashley Har well, Jillian Jaynes, Sarah Zatkiewicz, Peter Hamblen, Chris Dreger, Jake Mosley, and Oscar Quintero. You haven't heard pure God- glorifying talent until you've listened to the Praise Band. Whether it's a Chancel lor’s Chapel or Sunday morning and evening services, they are always prepared to worship our Lord. The tired bodies, out-of-tune strings, and sore voice boxes are never noticeable with the hours of practice they put into the music. We commend them for their dedication to worship.

From singing on stage, to working at Word of Life Island, to serving ice cream for Source One, the Impact Team does a variety of things! These nine guys were either First or second-year students at the Word of Life Bible Institute last year and are now taking a year to travel around the East Coast with their leader, Andrew Blount, and Micah Melville. They started their year by traveling together in a van. going from church to church, singing and doing services. Then for the Winter, the team headed down to Florida to help with Gospel Pro ductions, The Sights and Sounds of Christmas. They stopped back up in New York to help at Snow Camp and then headed to Honduras for a 17-day missions trip. They will spend their sum mer working and singing on Word of Life Island.

I

You may see this team of young ladies and gentlemen often per forming at Chancellor’s Chapel and during Snow Camp, but they do a lot more than that! There are also separate ensembles with different students from the Col legians that perform during cha pels. Also, over spring break all of the Collegians separated into groups, went to various places, performed and ministered to people all over. They’re spreading the Good News by doing the one thing they all have in common and love....singing!

■r Every year, the Bible Institute pools its student body for the soccer players. These guys, under the leadership of Coach Warken, play about 16 games in their regular season. The soccer team offers its members a two-fold opportu nity. A chance to play soccer, and a chance to minister to fellow soccer players. After games, the team will gather round and share a word of testimony with whoever they just competed against. It’s a unique ministry opportunity enabling those who might not have otherwise had the ability to hear the Gospel.

Far more than just a sports team, the girls’volleyball team proves to be quite the force on and off the court. 1 Timothy 4:8 says physical training is good, but training for godliness much better, promising benefits in this life and the life to come. These girls without a doubt train for more than earthly glory. They are working towards something much more lasting. That fact is clear through their effort to maintain that this is a ministry first with the goal of being a light amongst darkness and furthering the Gospel with volleyball as the common ground.

Men’s basketball....it’s more than playing a sport and guys hanging out! It’s about furthering God’s kingdom. Just like everything else here at Word of Life, the Men’s Basketball team serves more than one purpose. They not only seek to push themselves harder and enjoy the sport of basketball, they use their talents and abilities to reach people with whom we would otherwise not have the opportunity to share the Gospel. Whether through sharing testimonies after a game or going to New York City to play and share the Gospel there, they seek to make Christ

Cant quite keep up with these girls! They really set the bar high in more ways than one proving it’s far more than just girls playing basketball. These girls work to build up His Kingdom making this team a true ministry. It’s apparent through the way they interact with opposing teams that they want more than a victory. The greatest goal above all is that God will be glorified through the way they play, pray and interact both on and off the court.

I had an image of the country of Brazil and how it looks like and what they ate since I used to live in Brazil. But what I experienced on the ministry side was all new things. We had an opportunity to meet Mr. Harold Reimer who started the Word of Life ministry in Brazil with Mr. Harry Bollback and hear his testimony from his life experience. He caught all of my attention because the situation was what Japan looks like spiritually now and what he wanted to do with Brazil was the same as what I want to do in my future in Japan. We worked for a local kids ministry for the first day and worked for the day camp ministry most of the week. We were told that local kids were so poor and every kid has some family issue and they need love. So I was expecting that we need to go and show them love. But they actually came to the us and asked us a bunch of questions and jumped on our backs. I was moved by their smile when they were playing with us. They looked so happy. Ministry became more real through this trip. In Philippians chapter two, it talks about being one and when we actually do it, God uses us since He is so gracious and faithful to us.

By Hannah Mahoney

Personally, God used this Missions Reality trip to transform my thinking in many areas. Each day seemed to come with a new challenge from the Lord. Altogether, I would describe Missions Reality as a life changing experience, but don’t just listen to me, here’s what the students have said... “The people on the trip really took the Proverbs 27:17 passage to heart, and made tne trip one of the biggest learning experiences of either of my years at the BI. I came back to the U.S. a changed person, and look for ward to many more mission trips!” - D. C. “On the trip, the Lord really taught me the importance of the Gospel being the cause of not just evangelism, but everything we do.” - E. O. Es solo por Jesus que vivo yo! - It’s all because of Jesus I’m alive! That is tne message our team shared ev erywhere we went in the Dominican Republic. From Haitian villages to local churches and even in public schools, the Gospel of Jesus Christ was shared! Most of us were not able to talk with the people in their own language, but praise God, He has given us so many more ways than just speech to communicate love! In a local Haitian Village, we had the opportunity to hand out bundles of food to 65 very needy families! It was such a blessing to be able to tell them about the love of Christ ana then give them a taste of what that love looks like. In multiple cities, we were able to bring the fun of camp right to public school students through Super Matches where we would sing, play games and share the Gospel. One of the most exciting opportunities we had was to work with the Word of Life missionaries on the new property, helping them prepare for camp! It was hard work, but having the chance to encourage them was more than worth the effort! “One of the biggest things I learned was that God is always at work, whether you see Him or not, and it’s not up to me to judge the success, but just to do.” - A. R.

“God Greatly impacted me through this trip, much more than I had expected and in different ways. I have grown a passion for the needs in the Dominican Republic, and now I will be returning as an intern!” ; - S. N.

In the city of Bernal we stayed at the beautiful Word of Life Property. Once there we spent time charing about Christ in a detenion center, childrenn's home, a prison, an orphanage, public school, and shopping plaza. I was so amazed at how quickly our team bonded and worked. The second day we headed to Mexico City to help out with a Word of Life Teens Involved event that they put on there. For me it was something I was used to because I had grown up performing in Teens Involved. The one thing I wasn't used to was not being able to understand the things they were saying. You could tell they had the same passion as us but just in a different language. On the third night we were ready for Open Air Evan gelism. Within 3 hours we had passed out over 3,)000 tracts and got to share in 3 different locations through out Mexico City. 1was so impressed at how open the peopl were to the Gospel. They would stop and talk or if they couldn't stop they took a tract so they could read it. The kids that we met at Sunday School and gotten to know came and helped translate for us. It was an amaz ing time. On the fifth day we helped out at the missionary school that's on the campus there. We mixed up the Mexican and the gringos so it was semi fair but in the end my team lost. However I wouldn't trade the time and the fun there for a win. I had a blast. It was bittersweet to leae but I was glad to be a part of it. God wowed me and opened my eyes to how powerful the gospel really is. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything.

It was different than any missions trip I had ever been on and I have been on eight now! There were a lot of firsts for me on this trip. It was my first time flying on Lufthansa Airlines, first time in Europe, first time I have had an exchange rate of $1 to 220 (Hungarian Forint), first missionary trip with a such a big group, first time seeing a castle in person, first time being to a museum dedication to showing the oppres sion of a nation, first time teaching English to somebody outside of the United States, and first time ever being at an orphanage. The first orphanage we went to just blew me away. There was not that many there that day, maybe 25, but it was still a lot to me. All those kids really wanted was to be loved on. All of them were having a great time with us expect one, who I later learned that his parents had died very tragically and so now he only really gets along iwht those he can help and protect. We had the opportunity to minister at a couple schools. The second school was a public school, so we went to teach conversational English all day long! It was so much fun. I had never done anything like that before. Thoughout the day we taught about ten or so different English classes, as well as going to a couple classrooms where they sang for us and we sang for them. I have to just stay that it was one of the cool est missions trips events that I have ever done. Over-all it was a great trip, and I am glad that God could use me in it. | ~Ethan VanBruggen 89
