“I’m gonna get myself, I’m gonna get myself, I’m gonna get myself connected ”

Samantha O’Sullivan ChMCIPPdip, policy lead at CIPP , explains why you need to book to attend our upcoming BeConnected: National Forum events. Miss them, miss out!

F orgive my cheeky reference to the renowned Stereo MC’s song, but I couldn’t resist! However, as a long- standing member of the CIPP, and now, a very proud member of staff within the policy and research team, I want to share the reasons why our face-to-face or online BeConnected events deserve a slot in your diary. They kick off from February 2024, so there’s still time to book! I must be completely honest now. When I was a member, this is one of the events I never attended. And now I’m a member of staff responsible for the content shared at these events, I kick myself knowing I missed out on such a huge learning experience. So, here I am, wanting to share my lessons learnt with you, so you aren’t missing out in future if you’ve never attended before. So, why should you attend? Our BeConnected events run at the start of the calendar year, providing associate members and above with a thorough legislative update, either face-to-face or online. This is to ensure you can launch into the new tax year, comfortable with what’s changing and why, and also what’s staying the same. Not only is it the perfect opportunity to upskill ahead of the new tax year but it’s also an opportunity for wider learning. For the 2024 events, we’ll provide you with an employment law update, as we know just how much employment law impacts the work we carry out as payroll professionals. Within the policy and research team, we always aim to make our events as topical as possible. During our 2023 BeConnected events, we held a live think

tank session, where we discussed the consultation which had just been released from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). This centred on the calculation of holiday entitlement received by part-year and irregular hours workers, following the recent Supreme Court judgment in Harpur Trust v Brazel. These sessions went down a storm, with members collaborating, to help us formulate our consultation response, and help shape the future of our wonderful profession. These sessions are something we would like to run again, but, as we like to keep our events as timely and topical as possible, it means we don’t have a ‘fixed’ agenda for this interactive session just yet! See what our members said last year... “The BeConnected National Forum in Birmingham last year was both invaluable and uplifting for me. We’ve all been through the struggles of Covid, and this was the first face-to-face forum for me since the pandemic hit us all. It was great to connect with other payroll professionals and to discuss challenges, also sharing solutions. “The legislative update and the employment law sections were refreshing, insightful and useful. Both sessions gave a clear overview of the changes on the horizon (exactly what you need before April), and what exactly this meant for

anyone handling payrolls. The policy team also facilitated an interactive discussion on the Harpur Trust v Brazel case, and it felt reassuring to know that others were finding it challenging too! “The venue and refreshments were great, and everyone was very welcoming. The BeConnected event was extremely worthwhile, and I would encourage all members to attend (associate level members too). Don’t feel too intimated to attend a ‘forum’ – it’s really just a room full of people who are passionate about payroll!” Dates for the diary l 7 February – face-to-face, Birmingham l 15 February – online, 10-12noon l 21 February – face-to-face, London l 28 February – online, 12noon-2pm l 6 March – face-to-face, Manchester l 15 March – online, 2-4pm. All face-to-face events will run from 2-5pm, finishing the day with a networking drinks reception until 7pm. Please note the programme will remain the same for the duration of the BeConnected: National Forum events. You will only be able to attend one event. Don’t delay, head over to the events page of our website to book your chosen event, today: https://ow.ly/ClQG50Q6n8j. I look forward to seeing you all soon and to BeingConnected . n
