three cerebral palsy World Cups – one in England, one in Argentina and one in Spain. Alongside my footballing achievements, I have also continued my education. Shortly after the accident, my educational memory in some subjects had dropped to level one / two – the equivalent to a year one child at the age of seven. With one-to-one support, I have remarkably gone on to achieve a degree in a sports science programme and graduated in late 2018. My inspirational story and ‘never give up’ attitude has been recognised as I’ve also been awarded an MBE for services to young people in Solihull in the West Midlands in the United Kingdom. I have inspired people throughout the UK and the world, delivering my renowned inspirational ‘anything is possible’ speeches, which encourage every individual that giving up never has to be an option, no matter what. I have had many personal and physical challenges to overcome, but anything is possible. In your careers, there will be days when you struggle, days when you don’t feel like training or working hard. But if you have hope, self-belief and determination, you will be surprised at what you can achieve! I know I am. My own journey doesn’t stop here though, I want to play for team Ireland in the Paralympics, I want to win as many caps as I can and hopefully one day captain Northern Ireland and lift that World Cup. More importantly, I want to continue to inspire others, highlighting what fantastic opportunities there are, and inspiring them to work hard to achieve their goals and dreams. I wish you all the very best in your futures, make the most of every opportunity you are given and, of course, remember that with hard work and determination, anything is possible . n

be at whatever we do. My dream was to become a professional footballer and I was on the way to fulfilling my dream until a road traffic accident back in 2012 almost took it away. I suffered a severe brain injury after being hit by an overtaking car while crossing the road. Shortly before the accident, I had just finished a four-year contract at Birmingham City Football Club Academy and was trialling for Milton Keynes Dons Football Club. Following the accident, I was rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, placed in an induced coma and spent 11 uncertain days in intensive care. I was then transferred on to a neuro ward where I spent the next four months in the early stages of recovery. I went on to complete an intense six-month rehabilitation programme ran by The Children’s Trust in Surrey where I learned to eat, walk and talk again. I finally returned home in February 2013 and from there, I began my remarkable journey to recovery. Nothing was going to stop me getting back on that pitch where I belonged. I’m now back playing football for my local Solihull Moors Football Club Community team and my beloved Northern Ireland cerebral palsy team as well. There were two things that gave me the best chance to recover as I have today: l the parental and family support in everything I have done has been massive l a ‘never say die’ attitude. What I’m doing now My life changed completely after the accident but now I have so many other and better opportunities. Playing for Northern Ireland has seen me gain six international caps and play in
