Pet. 3 :19) ? What is “ sin unto death” (I John 5:16) ? And what about those spirits like locusts (Rev. 9) ? Add to this the study of ori ginal languages in which the Bi ble was written. Our English Bi ble today is the result of pain staking toil by devoted men who sought to translate the Old Tes tament Hebrew and Aramaic and the New Testament Greek into the English language. One can consume hours and days — even a lifetime—just working through the original languages to write out word pictures that will articu late precisely what the Hebrew or Greek meant in its colorful rich ness. Some of these are very in telligible to the layman who can not handle Hebrew or Greek, and he can use them with pleasure. Such are Kenneth Wuest’s books on the New Testament, William Barclay’s seventeen commenta ries on the New Testament, and certain individual commentaries on various books. Even these are not all. What about the area of the apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, the history o f translating the Bible, and on and on? But ultimately we come to the most vital practical matter o f ap plying the Bible. If a man traffics in the Book but does not apply what it says to his own life in a living way, he has not involved himself as God intends. He may be out to master the Bible, but he keeps that Bible at arm’s length and tragically it does not master him. The proper attitude is to combine a spirit of diligence in studying the Word with a re ceptivity that cries, like our Lord, “ I come to do thy will!” Some fairly recent works help ful to King’s Business readers are: John Scammon has contributed Living With the Psalms (Judson Press, $3.95), a daily devotional guide in Psalms 23, 51, 24, 73, 139, 44, 97, 110, and 8. There is a richness of refreshing comments, (continued, on page 37)

T HIS Scripture is directed only to "born- again” (John 3:3) people in whose hearts the Holy Spirit has been implanted by grace. To them alone, who have the loving Lord Jesus as their Shepherd and Guide, is the promise made that “ all things" that come in their life will "work together for good.” The unsaved, who are not "called according to His purpose,” will find that ultimately all things will work together for their greater sorrow — both here and hereafter. For a life unblessed and untempered by the grace of God is one that can expect only increas ing unhappiness and fearful consequences. A dear old Negro pastor was once asked to speak at the funeral of a little child. Taking as his text Romans 8:28 he said in substance: "Brethren, we can’t take any one of God’s dealings by itself. We have to put them all together. He doesn’t say His deal ings work by themselves, He says they work ’together’ for good. Have you ever heard a brass band? If you take each of the horns separately and listen to them — you’d find
it makes mighty poor music. The high tenor horn is sometimes shrill by itself. It takes all the horns playing together to make sweet music. This life is often like the notes on the big bass horn. There is very little music there; but let us wait in faith until God brings in the other instruments, and then there will be blessed harmony and a pleasing melody. The bass horn of death makes a solemn and often unwelcome sound. Let us wait, however, for the horn of the resurrec tion, for the horn of the ascension, for the angelic horn; for when all the horns in God's great hand have ‘providenced together’ then they will produce their splendid music in Heaven!” Don’t try to analyze the one horn of distress you hear now, Christian. By faith determine to wipe your tears and wait for "God's orchestra.” Someday it will sound the full melody of Romans 8:28 on the Glory Side!
THOT: God gives us crosses here, that we may wear crowns over There!
