said: “You can see what hap pened to this boy when he left his father. He fell into sin. At last he was so dirty and so hungry and so disgusted with himself that he decided to go back home. He ex pected his father to scold him— maybe even beat him — and per haps make a servant out o f him. But you have heard what he did instead: he washed him and clothed him in clean clothes (his father’s best) and fed him a big, delicious meal. Can any of you tell me the real meaning of this story?” To everyone’s surprise, Run ning Deer jumped to his feet and walked up to the front. “ I can, Mr. Cameron,” he said, “ I am like that boy. I tried to run away from my sins but I just took them with me. They got worse and worse. I thought Swift Arrow could carry me so far I would forget I was a sinner. But I was running the wrong way,” and tears came into his eyes, a strange thing for an Indian boy. “ I want to come to Jesus and have Him wash me and make me His boy.” Mr. Cameron put his arm about Running Deer and together they knelt on the grass and leaves. The missionary said softly: “ Running Deer, say this prayer after me if you mean it: ‘Lord, I receive Jesus as my Saviour and ask Thee to forgive me and save me for His sake.” In a clear voice, Running Deer re peated the words, after which the boys and girls gathered around, joyously singing: “ What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood o f Jesus” It was the happiest night of Run ning Deer’s life. He had stopped running, for he had run straight into the arms of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now a fine church for men and women, boys and girls, stands where the little brush arbor had been and Running Deer’s grand children go to a lively Sunday school, but few of the older people remember the brush arbor, the missionary who truly loved the Pimas, and the boy who stopped running.
