Their absence echoes painfully in our communities, reminding us that violence against women remains far too present.” École Polytechnique December 6 1989, Marc Lépine, armed with semi-automatic rifle and a hunting knife, entered the mechanical engineering class at École Polytechnique. He told the men to leave and ordered the women to one side of the room. He then shot the women, killing six of them, all the while claiming he was “fighting feminism”. He then went through the school hallways, into the cafeteria and another room, killing eight more women with his gun and knife within about 20 minutes before shooting himself. Police investigation determined Lépine bought the gun at a sports store, claiming he was going to hunt small game. He made seven trips to École Polytechnique prior to December 6, wandering around outside and inside the building. The incident over what became known as the Montréal Massacre sparked debate in Parliament and across the country about both the issue of violence against women and the status of Canada’s laws dealing with the acquisition of guns and other weapons. Tight gun-control laws were passed and HSPVQTMJLF$13&7'MPCCJFEGPSHSFBUFSQVCMJD awareness of violence against women and children and for more government and social action to prevent future incidents. The common area at Café Joyeux in Rockland became a room of solemn remembrance on December 6 during a vigil organized by La Coalition de Prescott et Russell pour éliminer la violence faite aux femmes/Prescott and Russell Coalition to Stop Violence against Women. December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action to Stop Violence against Women, intended to honour the memory of 14 women killed at École Polytechnique in Montréal and remind Canadians of the need to stop violence against women and children.
