Benefits of Tallow for Skincare

Tallow, especially grass-fed beef tallow, has gained popularity in skincare because of its nourishing, hydrating, and skin-compatible properties, making it the ideal base for skincare for all skin types. Here are some of the benefits that set tallow apart:

Skin Similarity. Tallow’s fatty acid profile closely resembles that of human skin, particularly the sebum our skin naturally produces. This means it’s easily absorbed and less likely to clog pores, making it highly compatible with most skin types. Rich in Fat-Soluble Vitamins. Tallow is naturally packed with fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, which are essential for skin health. Vitamin A supports cell turnover, while vitamins D and E help with skin repair and inflammation, and vitamin K is known for its healing properties. Moisturizing and Protective. Tallow provides a thick, occlusive layer that seals in moisture, making it especially beneficial for dry or damaged skin. It helps to form a natural barrier, protecting skin from environmental stressors without causing irritation. High in Omega Fatty Acids. Tallow contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to reduce inflammation and support the skin’s lipid barrier. These fatty acids can soothe irritated skin and improve elasticity. Antioxidant Properties. Tallow contains natural antioxidants that help combat free radicals, which are responsible for premature aging, making tallow a great choice for those looking to maintain youthful looking skin that is resilient to the effects of aging.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry:

Choosing an Old World Style Wine

‘Old World’ wines are wines described mostly by region, rather than actual style. An ‘Old World’ wine is typically going to be from Europe, however, it can also include regions of the Mediterranean basin with long histories of winemaking, such as North Africa and Near East. European countries often included and considered ‘Old World’ are Austria, France, Italy, Georgia, Spain, and Portugal. These countries can have very different styles of wine, which is why ‘Old World’ is not considered a specific style.

It is also a term used in contrast to other regions, such as the United States, Australia, South America, and South Africa, which are known as ‘New World’ wines.

So, now that you know the distinction between an ‘Old World’ and a ‘New World’ wine, let’s discuss why choosing ‘Old World’ wines could be the greatest wine hack ever.

‘Old World’ Wines FTW Generally, an ‘Old World’ wine is going to be made using, well, ‘Old World’ methods. This means, the herbicides, pesticides, and other harsh chemicals we use in modern growing aren’t used, as they weren’t available.

You know how in the U.S. we make a distinction (and subsequently label as such) for plants grown like this, called “organic”?

Well, not the same with ‘Old World’ wines, as you can generally assume many of these wines are “organic” because inorganic, or “conventional” as we now call it, wasn’t a thing in the ‘Old World’,

The grapes grown for ‘Old World’ wines will also be grown in a more biodynamic environment, meaning in a more robust, nutrient rich “living” soil, which will make a healthier glass of wine.

nonanutrition.com

These wines should also not have preservatives called “sulfites” added to them, because, well, once again, this was not a thing in the ‘Old World’. Wine naturally contains a small amount of sulfites, however, these sulfites are often added to ‘New World’ wines as an additional preservative, and people can have sensitivities to these sulfites. In many cases, these sensitivities can be one of the main culprits behind the dreaded “wine headache”. In short, ‘Old World’ winemakers are purists, making wine in the traditional ‘Old World’ way of making wine, before we started adding preservatives, and using harsh chemicals on our crops, making them “organic” and free of preservatives simply because that’s how it’s always been done. Also as a result of this, the grapes grown using ‘Old World’ methods will be more rich in anti-aging antioxidants you hear so much about with red wine, as they have to be more resilient to natural elements, because they don’t have the protection of the herbicides and pesticides.

Finally, an ‘Old World’ wine will typically be lower in alcohol content as well.

All said and done, a great general rule of thumb if you want to drink the healthiest glass of wine without the headache (and yes, red wine, in moderation, is quite good for you and appears to provide real anti-aging benefits) is to go ‘Old World’.

How to Choose an ‘Old World’ Wine If out at a restaurant, and they have a Sommelier, you can simply ask for ‘Old World’ recommendations as a starting off point, and then select something whose taste profile jumps out at you from there. When shopping for yourself, or if you’re having guests over, or personally selecting a wine at a restaurant, going regional for Italy, France, or the Basque region (in between Spain and France) is a pretty good rule of thumb to ensure you are getting an ‘Old World’ wine. Some of our personal favorite styles are Tempranillo (Basque region of Spain), Bordeaux (French regional), and a Cote du Rhone (a coastal region of France). I’ve found Italian wines that are regional, and most likely ‘Old World’, are not named after a grape or region, but rather, the family vintner, so look for Italian wines named after the winemaking family itself.

Hacking The Holidays:

Detoxification

The festive season's indulgences and environmental stressors create unique challenges for our body's natural detoxification processes. The holiday season brings joy and celebration, but it also introduces an array of challenges to our body's natural detoxification systems. From rich foods and increased alcohol consumption to late nights and stress, our bodies face a heightened toxic load during this festive period. Environmental factors like indoor heating and less time outdoors can further compromise our natural cleansing processes, making mindful detoxification strategies particularly important during this time of year.

Z Biotics: Prevent Hangovers

When we drink, our bodies break down alcohol into an unwanted byproduct called acetaldehyde. That byproduct is largely responsible for how we feel the day after drinking. ZBiotics “Pre-Alcohol” helps our gut catch up by temporarily adding a probiotic that can break down acetaldehyde. This probiotic – Bacillus subtilis ZB183™ – has been engineered to produce the same type of enzyme as our liver: one that digests acetaldehyde.

nonanutrition.com

From Feast To Vitality.

Cymbiotika Liposomal Glutathione

Glutathioine is known as the body’s “master antioxidant”, which means it is an antioxidant produced within the body and controls many pathways such as anti-inflammatory and detox. Glutathione pairs well with ZBiotics before an evening of festivities.

Cymbiotika Activated Charcoal

Charcoal is an effective binding agent, which means when consumed, it will bind to harmful toxins in the body such as heavy metals, synthetic chemicals, and other inorganic compounds. Take any time of day on an empty stomach to aid the body in detoxification.

JustThrive Probiotic

Probiotic spores, unlike a traditional probiotic supplement, actually re-seed gut bacteria, leading to healthier, more diverse populations of beneficial bacteria. The environmental factors, stressors, and food & drink choices during the holiday season can all wreak havoc on your gut. Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is your #1 line of defense.

Hacking The Holidays:

Maintain Gut Integrity and Boost Immunity with Colostrum

Colostrum is the nutrient-rich “first milk” produced by mammals after giving birth, and is packed with 400+ powerful bioactive compounds that support gut health and immunity.

This means that the only time you would have had colostrum naturally was immediately after you were born, and that is if you were breastfed. Which means, the only way to now reap all of the almost magical benefits of colostrum is through supplementation. Colostrum has been shown (clinical research-backed) to be 3x more effective than the flu shot at preventing infection, can help maintain the integrity of your gut and intestinal lining, reduces inflammation, and helps support your beneficial gut bacteria.

As we celebrate the holidays, it typically means eating pro-inflammatory foods that can wreak havoc on our gut health and the overall integrity of our gut and intestinal lining.

Our celebrating is often done with co-workers, friends, and family in the heart of cold & flu season, which also puts our immune system to the test.

Colostrum is an amazing 1-2 punch to combat both the attack on our gut and our immune system as we eat, drink, and be merry with friends and family.

nonanutrition.com

Here are some of the most notable benefits of this magical superfood of mother’s milk:

Rich in Immunoglobulins. Colostrum contains high levels of immunoglobulins (especially IgG), which are antibodies that help protect the body from pathogens like bacteria and viruses. They can help build a stronger immune system by directly supporting immune cell activity, and is most likely one of the primary reasons colostrum supplementation has been

shown to be 3x more effective at preventing transmission of the flu than the flu shot itself.

Supports Gut and Intestinal Lining Repair. Colostrum contains growth factors, particularly epithelial growth factor (EGF) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF), which help repair and regenerate the gut lining. This is especially beneficial for people dealing with “leaky gut” or intestinal permeability, as it helps strengthen the barrier that keeps toxins out of the bloodstream. Antimicrobial Properties. Colostrum is naturally rich in lactoferrin, an antimicrobial protein that helps to kill harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses in the gut. Promotes Beneficial Gut Bacteria. Colostrum supports a healthy gut microbiome by encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria. This is due in part to its oligosaccharides, which act as prebiotics—essentially “food” for good bacteria. Anti-Inflammatory Effects. Colostrum has bioactive anti-inflammatory compounds that can help reduce inflammation in the gut and throughout the body. Chronic inflammation can weaken the immune system, so reducing inflammation is key for maintaining strong immunity. Boosts Cellular Immunity. Colostrum helps regulate cytokine production, which supports immune system communication and cellular immunity. This can be especially beneficial for people looking to strengthen their body’s response to pathogens and reduce susceptibility to infections.

Colostrum’s unique combination of immune-supportive, gut-healing, and anti-inflammatory bioactive compounds makes it a powerful tool for enhancing gut health and supporting immunity.

Colostrum Cream Frosting Ingredients

Colostrum Cream Frosting Instructions

• Beat softened butter and cream cheese until well blended.

• 1/2 cup butter, room temperature • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature • 1/2 cup Colostrum • 2 cups tapioca powder • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1/8 tsp salt • Maple syrup to taste

• Add colostrum, tapioca, vanilla, salt, and maple syrup to desired level of sweetness. Beat until creamy.

• NOTE: We recommend adding pure maple syrup, an entirely natural sweetener to taste, but feel free to use stevia or monk fruit if you’d prefer. If you want the frosting more on the sweet side, feel free to be more liberal with the maple syrup, as long as it’s pure and unprocessed.

• Spread the frosting on top of the cooled cake with a spatula.

Finishing Touch

• For an added nutritional boost, we crush and top the frosted cake with organic dark chocolate, which is one of the most antioxidant rich foods on the planet and provides a nice final touch.

Hacking The Holidays:

Regulating Blood Sugar

The holiday season can be rough on the waistline. It begins with Thanksgiving, which for many of us, is probably our most indulgent meal or day of eating of the year, and then keeps going with holiday parties and get-togethers, and finally finishes off with the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.

And then there’s the natural inclination to just let it all go for the entire holiday season.

Fear not, there are some natural plant & herb extracts that are highly effective at helping to curb appetite and more effectively regulate blood sugar.

Think of them like nature’s Ozempic .

Not only do these extracts not have any side effects, but they actually have profound anti-aging and disease preventive properties, and are known as “fasting mimickers” for their ability to recreate the benefits from fasting on our cells just from taking them. Furthermore, one of these extracts, Berberine, is an amazing molecule that has also been shown in clinical research to reduce plaque buildup in your arteries significantly better than statins.

That’s all on top of helping to reduce the impact of all those bad calories we consume during the holiday season.

nonanutrition.com

From Feast To Vitality.

The Glucovantage and Cravings Killer from Alpha Lion can be your secret weapon during the holiday season to help you better regulate your blood sugar and curb your appetite. Benefits of the active ingredients in these two supplements include: Activates AMPK (Adenosine Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase). An enzyme often called the “metabolic master switch.” AMPK regulates energy metabolism and glucose uptake. When activated, AMPK increases glucose uptake in cells and improves insulin sensitivity, helping to lower blood sugar levels. Increases Insulin Sensitivity. By improving insulin receptor sensitivity, the active ingredients make it easier for cells to respond to insulin. This allows more glucose to enter cells from the bloodstream, lowering blood sugar levels. Reduces Gluconeogenesis in the Liver. Berberine and InnoSlim ™ inhibit enzymes involved in gluconeogenesis, the process by which the liver produces glucose. By reducing the liver’s glucose output, they help keep blood sugar levels more stable.

Slows Carbohydrate Digestion. Berberine and InnoSlim ™ slow the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines, helping to prevent sharp spikes in blood sugar after meals.

Lowers Blood Lipids. Berberine is also known to help regulate lipid metabolism, reducing triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. Improved lipid levels can contribute to better overall metabolic health, which supports blood sugar regulation, and reduces risk of heart disease.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry:

Cranberry Gin Fizz

This clean, holiday inspired cocktail is rich in antioxidants and is a great appetizer drink before a meal as it will also aid in digestion. Gin as a digestif. Gin is always a great choice for a cocktail, and even if you don’t like the flavor of it straight, the herbacious essence is often muted in a well mixed drink, and it should just come off as a “refreshing” flavor. First, gin is probably the cleanest burning of all liquor options (one could also add tequila to this discussion), making it less likely to cause a hangover, and is easiest on your body to process. The juniper and some of the herbs that are added to gin also classify gin as a “bitter” which means it’s a digestif, making any gin cocktail a true digestive aid before a big meal. Cranberries add a nutrient rich, seasonal touch. Cranberries are such a classic holiday seasonal fruit, and are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and anti-aging antioxidants like polyphenols and resveratrol. Use a pure, organic cranberry juice for this cocktail to ensure the cleanest, healthiest juice as a mixer. Furthermore, cranberries, having a bitterness to them, also act as a complementary digestif to the gin.

nonanutrition.com

How to make a Cranberry Gin Fizz

• Pour one part gin (1oz-1.5oz based on preference) into a tall cocktail glass.

• Add two parts (roughly 2oz) organic cranberry juice.

• Add a teaspoon of real cranberry relish or a chunky cranberry sauce (don’t use the gelled together canned cranberry sauce) and mix together.

• Fill glass with ice.

• And now to add some bubbles, as bubbles always feel more celebratory.

• Top off with your choice of Prosecco to add some bubbly sweetness, • or a bubbly mineral water like Pellegrino for a little extra hydration.

• Optional: Garnish with a sprig of rosemary to complement the gin and another teaspoon of cranberry relish on top.

Try Ketones for an Uplifting Non-Alcoholic Cocktail

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry:

Why Ketones over Mocktails? Most mocktails are comprised of adaptogenic herbs and botanicals that mellow you out, which is great if you’re looking for a non-alcoholic alternative to an end of day relaxing drink or glass of wine. If you’re with family or friends celebrating, or at a holiday party, the last thing you probably want is something that will mellow you out too much. Ketones are the most ideal natural energy source for your body and brain, as they are an energy source produced by the human body. You can also consume bio-identical ketones that your body will recognize as natural ketones, giving you the same satiating, uplifting feeling you get when in ketosis. The KEY ketone based energy drinks also combine a therapeutic amount of caffeine (about as much as a small cup of coffee), and when combined with the ketones, it’s like peanut butter & jelly for your brain, the perfect combo! This combination will provide you with an energizing, uplifting feeling and “buzz”. Furthermore, ketones are natural appetite suppressants, so drinking ketones can also help avoid over consuming food which is always a concern during holiday festivities. And funny thing is, ketone esters are actually a form of alcohol. When we think of an alcoholic drink, the form of alcohol we are actually referring to is “ethanol”. There are many other forms of alcohol that don’t lead to intoxication and ketone esters are one of them. Drinking a KEY ketone drink actually has a bit of a boozy taste to it, so pour it over some ice and enjoy it like you would a hard seltzer.

Cold Water Exposure Rewires your Brain

An article published in February 2023 titled, MRI scans reveal changes in the brain’s wiring after cold water shock, cites an interesting, and first of its kind study on the effects of cold water immersion on the brain. In the study, 33 participants were given an initial functional MRI (fMRI) scan of their brain, and then were immersed in a cold bath with only their head sticking out for 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes, study participants quickly dried off and were then given another fMRI scan of their brain. The physiological effects and subsequent benefits of cold water immersion have been well studied, however, this was the first study of its kind that studied the effects of cold water immersion on the brain, and its effects on psychological health. “All tiny parts of the brain are connected to each other in a certain pattern when we carry out activities in our day-to-day lives, so the brain works as a whole.” said Dr Yankouskaya. “After our participants went in the cold water, we saw the physiological effects – such as shivering and heavy breathing. The MRI scans then showed us how the brain rewires its connectivity to help the person cope with the shock.” When the before and after (cold water immersion) fMRI scans were compared, they showed that changes in the connectivity between parts of the brain had occurred. Most notable were changes in the wiring of the medial prefrontal cortex and the parietal cortex. “These are the parts of the brain that control our emotions, and help us stay attentive and make decisions,” Dr Yankouskaya said. “So when the participants told us that they felt more alert, excited and generally better after their cold bath, we expected to see changes to the connectivity between those parts. And that is exactly what we found.”

nonanutrition.com

Here’s the most fascinating aspect of the study when you consider the seemingly profound effects of the cold water immersion after only 5 minutes…the study participants were immersed in water at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius (the study was performed in the UK). We’ll save you the time, as we did the math for you. 20 degrees Celsius is equal to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s not that cold at all. Which means even a 5 minute “kinda cold” shower should elicit some positive changes in your mood and emotions. What a great way to take greater control to start your day! If you consider this time of year, with shorter days, less sunlight, more clouds, and the increased incidence of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), combined with the general mental and emotional anxiety and stress the holidays can bring, a somewhat cold to cold shower could be extremely beneficial in improving your mood, ability to handle and mitigate stress, and overall outlook for the day. We know it’s cold, and a cold shower probably sounds as appealing as a sharp stick to the eye, but if the benefits it yields mean a better, happier you this holiday season, that is more adept at handling stress during these short, dreary winter days, the trade off could be well worth it. Also, don’t underestimate the power of daily mental wins to start your day, and jumping in a cold shower when it’s 30 degrees outside requires more of a gut check than doing it when it’s sunny and 70, which then means you start your day mentally with a much bigger “win”. In short, EMBRACE the cold.
