It was not difficult to see th a t he had gripped th e atten tion of the men. Mr. Ch’eng tran slated fo r'D r. A. C. Dixon in Ruling this summer and though we were unable to have Dr. Dixon w ith us, Mr. Ch’eng gave his g reat sermon “Why I am a C hristian” , which was thoroughly in his own h ea rt as he had tran slated it for Dr. Dixon several times. A lthough not Chinese, Mr. Gardner Tewksbury was born in China and speaks a choice'Mandarin. He was edu cated a t th e Nanking, China, and Yale Universities, from both of which he holds th e B. A. degree. Mr. Tewks bury’s course was on th e Church. F irst th e tru th about th e Church as it is re vealed in the Word of God and then a survey of the Church as it exists in China. We feel sure th a t the men have a larg er and tru e r vision of the need in th e ir own land th a n ever before. The Rev. T: J. Preston, D. D., of th e Hunan Union Theological Seminary was w ith us for several days as a visitor and gave some helpful chapel talks and a Sunday morning sermon. The students of this Seminary attended the Conference in a body. When Mr. Ch’eng and Mr. Tewksbury left us afte r th e first eleven days of the Conference the Rev. J. H. Blackstone and th e Rev. W. C. Longden arrived. W ith them came as visitors Mr. William Blackstone, who has helped us by his solo singing and the Rev. Chas. E. Scott, M. A., D. D., of th e American Presby-

bn th e shoulders of four men, and when th e meal is over they are surprisingly near to empty. And ta k e ano ther peep into the same room from ano ther angle when three hundred and tw enty men are eagerly tu rn ed toward th e platform . Every man has his Bible, hymn book and note book and though the room was not built for an auditorium every man can hear. Each m orning th e re are th ree classes of one hour in length and the morning chapel period from eight to eight th irty . A full fifteen m inutes is insisted on be tween each class and the men are thu s able to give splendid atten tion th rough out th e whole morning. The Sunday services are differently arranged so th a t though every day of the Conference is full of happy Bible study, Sunday is in a special way a day of worship and fel lowship. The Speakers Of. course you are waiting "to hear about th e speakers. We cannot attem pt anything like an outline of th eir courses. The Rev. Shen Wen Ching is the only speaker who has been w ith us for the whole of th e Conference. He has de livered a most helpful course on the- Names of Jesus. The Rev.> Marcus Ch’eng, though a younger m a n ,, has already become widely appreciated. He has travelled in Sweden and America and has made a keen evaluation of- sp iritu al conditions in those countries.
