Concrete Society recognises Northern Ireland’s future industry leaders
Six talented young people at the start of their careers were recognised with Student and Sustainable Concrete Challenge awards organised by the Young Members’ Committee of the Concrete Society NI Region. Recognising dedication and hard work by individuals who will play a key role in advancing the local concrete industry in the future, the awards were presented by Young Members’ Committee Chair Donna Harkin. Ulster University students recognised on the evening included Aibrean Keyes (Construction Engineering & Management) and Jonathan Coon (Civil Engineering), achieving highest scores
in their respective Institute of Concrete Technology Stage 1 and concrete-related modules. Among winning entries from Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) was Aoife Duddy (Civil Engineering) with her submission ‘State-of-the-art macro defect-free cementitious composites: a review and experimental investigation’. QUB student Sumit Vishwarkama (Architecture) came out top with ‘A proposal which successfully employed concrete as an essential component of civil works and a civic infrastructure that supported a water-gathering framework in a time of water precarity’. The Sustainable Concrete Challenge
Awards, meanwhile, saw the Young Members’ Committee set a challenge for students, graduates and young industry professionals based in Northern Ireland to submit a paper relating to sustainable concrete use including innovative methods for contributing to the achievement of net zero and beyond in the concrete industry. Shauneen Cavanagh from Gravity Architects won the challenge with her paper, ‘Concrete action in a growing town: sustainable concrete use and carbon consideration in LK House, Letterkenny’. ‘The case for lean concrete: sustainable pad design for small-scale structures’ secured runner up for Yahya Hajjami from Design ID.
