ULSTER UNIVERSITY OPTOMETRY CLINIC, COLERAINE PROJECT PROFILE

ACOUSTIC PANELS Saint-Gobain Ecophon has supplied Solo™ Triangle free- hanging sound absorbing rafts for a revamp of the Ulster University (UU) Optometry Clinic. Triangular-shaped rafts, chosen to fit around M&E services and align with lighting, were supplied in a Akutex FT painted finish in Ecophon colours Ocean Storm (blue) and Cloudy Day (grey) to complement the refurbished facilities. Having previously provided similar panels to UU’s new Games Design and Development Suite at the Derry~Londonderry campus, the rafts provide a coherent design across campus. Davina Bradley, Project Specification Manager, says, “Our in- house design team developed a bespoke installation method to facilitate ease and accuracy during the installation process, partnering closely with our technical team and ROCS Contracts’ on-site installers to deliver exceptional results. “The coloured Triangle Solos make a significant impact in the room, adding warmth and vibrancy to the space. It was a pleasure working with Bell Contracts and ROCS Contracts on this project as both teams were committed to ensuring a high- quality installation and finish.”

ARCHITECT McAdam’s brief was to design and deliver a suite of new and upgraded facilities to enhance Ulster University’s teaching and learning environment. The Optometry Clinic was reimagined with the look and feel of a modern high-street optician by using large windows and carefully curated interior detailing. Retail-style frame displays, comfortable consultation zones and dedicated diagnostic rooms, supported by intuitive patient-flow layouts, deliver an authentic commercial atmosphere. For the laboratory teaching environment, McAdam prioritised flexibility, clarity of layout and technical functionality, incorporating a retractable partition for adaptability to different class sizes. Challenges included addressing fire-damaged building fabric prior to progressing with the layout and fitout for the laboratory and delivering the project within the context of a live university campus. Laura Smyth, Interior Designer, says, “By integrating thoughtful spatial planning, refined material choices and purposeful interior character, our architects and interior design team have delivered a redevelopment that stands out for its visual impact, functional sophistication and ability to bring people together within a cohesive, contemporary environment.”
