PROJECT PROFILE ABC HEALTH & LEISURE TRUST, BELFAST
ASBESTOS REMOVAL & DEMOLITION McCusker Demolition Ltd was engaged by Connolly & Fee Ltd to deliver phased asbestos removal and demolition works for the project. Works were undertaken within a live environment, surrounded by residential properties and an active commercial complex, requiring rigorous planning, stakeholder communication and environmental controls. Extensive asbestos removal was undertaken in conjunction with the phased demolition, necessitating full compliance with regulatory standards and strict health and safety protocols. Phase 1A involved partial demolition of the retained school buildings, which remained in active community use including a gym. Use of specialist robotic demolition equipment was critical in managing the interface works safely and precisely. Following construction of Phase 1B, the first stage of the new community hub, Phase 2A involved careful demolition of the remaining school structures near the new build. M&E CONSULTANT Simpson & Crawford Consulting Limited was engaged by Belfast City Council and Urban Villages to provide M&E consultancy services for this new community facility. With the existing building in full operation as a community hub, the new buildings were constructed in phases, working closely with project architect The Boyd Partnership and stakeholders. Featuring new environmental and sustainable technologies including solar electric generation and integrated air purification ventilation with heat recovery, the building offers reduced carbon emissions and water usage and is more than ready to meet the educational, physical and wellbeing needs of the local community and its staff members.
