SERMONS WITH INSIGHT

Sermons with Insight contains sermons that Pastor Zimany delivered while serving as a Lutheran clergyman. The sermons use metaphors to communicate religious terminology. In sermons, the congregation is encouraged to get involved in many causes. His main criteria for admission, however, was to present perspectives and methods that differ from those of fundamentalists and other groups. Examples of how what Jesus says literally can apply to us figuratively are given in a few of the discourses. Some of them deal with what it means to be saved and how we might change, finding transforming power, sometimes via self-sacrifice, and being born again, possibly after singing “I surrender all.” For instance, “yield fruit” signifies “perform good actions.” Other sermons highlight the importance of Jesus’ presence on earth, through which he brought God’s love closer to us and showed the value of faith, particularly among those who needed it most—outcasts, sinners, and scoundrels—giving them a sense of acceptance and self-worth and thereby demonstrating what God is like, how God acts, and what God is concerned about.

T he Rev. Dr. Roland Daniel Zimany has been preaching and has been in the pastoral ministry since 1997. He served as interim pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Illinois in 1997 and as minister of Luther Memorial Church in Des Moines, Iowa in 1998 to 2003. Presently, he serves as pulpit supply minister at Deerfield Retirement Community and in other churches in the state of Iowa. Pastor Zimany is a native of Irvington, New Jersey of Slovak heritage. In 1956, he went to pursue an education at Princeton University, earning the degree in Public and International Affairs, which later led him to work in business and government in the New York metropolitan area for fourteen years, mostly as a management analyst and as an interviewer. The year 1970 has always been the turning point of his life when a major career change took place. With a strong determination and faith in God, he went to Union Theological Seminary, from which he earned a Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree in 1974. Six years later, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion degree at Duke University in 1980, after spending a year at the University of Tuebingen, in Germany, which resulted in a book, entitled Vehicle for God: The Metaphorical Theology of Eberhard Juengle. In the same year after earning the doctorate degree, he became professor of Philosophy and Religion at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois up until 1993.

He and his wife, Barbara, have been married since 1976.

An effective communicator of God’s Word, the Rev. Dr. Roland Zimany is known for his practical and dynamic teaching style which helps people apply the timeless truths of Scripture to their everyday lives. Before considering the important part of the sermon, let's take a look at today's Gospel lesson and ask, what's wrong with this picture? What takes place in our Gospel story that does not reflect the way things usually happen in the world? If were teaching a class, I would now stop talking, and there would be a long period of silence, while you look through the biblical text on your bulletin insert, to try to find something unusual. But to ensure that this sermon ends before it's time for Sunday School to begin, I'll save some time by pointing out that it is highly unusual for two pregnant women to meet and for one to say to the other, "You're going to be the mother of someone whom I'll be calling 'Lord.’” Normally, Elizabeth--or anyone else--would not know such a thing in advance. Right? The reference is to Jesus, of course. Elizabeth calls him "Lord," and that fact provides a clue to what is going on here that you, as an average person-in-the-pew, would not even begin to imagine. At least, I didn't, until I went to seminary.

ECHOES OF FREEDOM

A Visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial

The Berlin Wall, a stark symbol of division and oppression, may be gone, but its memory lives on power- fully at the Berlin Wall Memorial. Located on Bernauer Strasse, this poignant outdoor exhibition serves as a vital testament to a divided past and a beacon of hope for a future free from such barriers. For anyone seeking to understand the profound impact of the Cold War on Germany and its people, a visit to this site is not merely recommended; it is essential.

U nlike a traditional museum, the Berlin Wall Me- morial integrates the remnants of the Wall with open-air exhibits, personal narratives, and his- torical documentation. The memorial is built around a preserved section of the original border fortifications, including a watchtower, a segment of the inner wall, the "death strip," and the outer wall. This allows visitors to physically walk through the very space that once sepa- rated families, friends, and a nation. The chilling reality of this physical barrier becomes palpable, offering a vis- ceral understanding of the fear and desperation it once instilled. One of the most moving aspects of the memorial is the "Window of Remembrance," an impressive display of photographs of those who died attempting to cross the Wall. Each face tells a story of courage, desperation, and ultimately, tragedy. These personal stories, interwoven with detailed historical accounts and original artifacts, humanize the immense political struggle and bring home the devastating human cost of the division. Beyond the physical remnants, the memorial also fea- tures the Chapel of Reconciliation, built on the former site of the Reconciliation Church, which was demol- ished to make way for the expansion of the Wall. This

modern chapel offers a quiet space for reflection and a powerful symbol of overcoming historical trauma. Furthermore, the visitor center provides a wealth of in- formation, including historical films, audio recordings, and interactive exhibits that delve deeper into the polit- ical context, the daily lives of those affected by the Wall, and the events leading up to its fall. A walk along the Bernauer Strasse offers additional in- sights. Information steles placed along the street mark significant escape attempts, tunnels, and the locations of houses that once straddled the border, vividly illus- trating the ingenious and often heartbreaking lengths people went to in their pursuit of freedom. The Berlin Wall Memorial is more than just a collec- tion of historical facts; it is an experience that resonates deeply. It serves as a powerful reminder of the fragility of freedom and the importance of vigilance against all forms of oppression. In an increasingly complex world, the lessons learned here – of division, resilience, and the triumph of the human spirit – remain profoundly relevant. A visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial is not just a journey into the past, but a crucial reflection on the present and a vital call to remember, so that such walls may never rise again.

Philippines Takes Center Stage at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2025

In a landmark moment for Philippine literature and culture, the Philippines is poised to take the prestigious role of Guest of Hon- or at the Frankfurter Buchmesse 2025 (Frankfurt Book Fair), held from October 15 to 19. This unprecedented honor marks a signif- icant milestone, offering the archipelagic nation an unparalleled global platform to showcase its rich literary heritage, vibrant cultural tapestry, and diverse voices to an international audience.

Under the evocative motto, “The Imagination Peo- ples the Air,” inspired by a line from Jose Rizal's seminal novel "Noli Me Tángere," the Philippines aims to build a bridge between its unique storytell- ing traditions and global perspectives. This theme encapsulates the profound intersection of Philip- pine literature, its dynamic culture, and its deeply rooted history, inviting the world to experience the nation's beating literary heart.

The Frankfurter Buchmesse, the world's largest and oldest book fair, annually draws thousands of exhibitors, publishers, authors, and literary enthu- siasts from across the globe. For the Philippines, being the Guest of Honor is not merely about ex- hibiting books; it's an opportunity to foster inter- national collaborations, promote translations of Filipino works into German and other languages, and strengthen the global network of Philippine publishers, authors, and cultural institutions.

Preparations for this momentous event have been under- way for quite some time, with various government agen- cies, including the National Book Development Board (NBDB), National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Office of Senator Loren Legarda, collaborating to ensure a truly impactful presence. Visitors to the 2025 Buchmesse can anticipate an immer- sive experience within the Philippine Guest of Honor Pa- vilion. Designed by Stanley Ruiz and curated by Patrick Flores, the pavilion promises to be an architectural mar- vel, configured like islands to evoke the archipelago itself. Utilizing indigenous materials such as kapis (shells), bam- boo, and pineapple fabric alongside modern elements, the design will create an airy, light, and generous space for introspection and connection. The translucent mem- branes of the structures, reminiscent of kites or lamps, will also serve as screens for captivating moving-image projects, further enhancing the sensory journey. The literary program itself is set to be extensive, with over 77 literary events planned, featuring a roster of at least 100 authors and creative players. The literary events will showcase a blend of veteran and new literary talents, with genres ranging from climate fiction and new adult to sci- ence fiction, poetry, graphic novels, children's literature, and contemporary fiction. The lineup is set to include award-winning writers like Luis Gatmaitan, Sarge Lac- uesta, and Ronaldo S. Tinio, along with Daryll Delgado and Jessica Zafra, who will have new German editions of their works. The program will also spotlight the vibrant graphic novel and comic scene, featuring artists such as Renren Galeno, J. Philip Ignacio, and Paolo Herras.

In addition to literary events, the Philippines will present its diverse cultural landscape through roughly 50 artists participating in various exhibitions, performances, and films. Attendees can look forward to unique cultural pre- sentations, including a special performance by the inter- nationally acclaimed Philippine Madrigal Singers, known for their powerful choral renditions of sacred hymns, folk traditions, kundiman classics, and contemporary Filipino works. Exhibitions like "Oculus" and "Sulog: Filipino Ar- chitecture at the Crosscurrents" will further deepen the cultural immersion. The Philippines' presence as Guest of Honor at Frankfurt- er Buchmesse 2025 is more than just a grand display; it is a profound declaration of identity, resilience, and the power of storytelling. It signifies a nation eager to share its narratives, engage in meaningful conversations on history, imagination, and pressing global issues, and ulti- mately, to give people the air with its vibrant and endur- ing imagination. This highly anticipated event promises to be a memorable celebration of Philippine creativity and a testament to the universal language of books.

A Gen X tale and an inspirational guide to advocate for yourself David Albert Francoeur

" I Rebuke Discouragement" is the spirit and heart- beat of an unforgettable human-interest story that centers on an ordinary individual confront- ed with an extraordinary situation. When a team of medical professionals delivered the devastating news that he was going to die, he made a powerful deci- sion: not to accept it. This story dives deep into how he acted and reacted, challenging what seemed in- evitable. It’s the kind of life-or-death moment most people fear but rarely face — and the author takes you directly into the heart of it with moving clarity. What makes this book truly stand out is its su- perb writing and the depth of its emotional and spiritual impact. Far more than a medical or personal memoir, it’s an inspiring call to inner strength and hope. The author doesn't just recount events — he invites the reader into his mindset, his struggle, and ultimately his triumph. It’s hard not to imagine yourself in his position, asking: how would I respond if my life were on the line?

Although small in size, this book delivers enormous value. With the tone and pacing of a gripping Holly- wood movie, the story never feels preachy or clinical — it feels human. It’s a reminder of the power of advo- cating for oneself, even when facing the most intimi- dating odds. After determined and positive efforts to seek out answers and fight back, the author eventually hears a stunning conclusion from a group of neurolo- gists: they believe he may have just saved his own life. This is more than a book — it’s a lifeline. Readers will come away not only inspired but equipped with practical advice that could genuinely change their own lives. The message is universal, the experience deeply personal, and the lesson unforgettable. "I Re- buke Discouragement" is a must-read for anyone who’s ever been told to give up — and chose not to.

D espite what Jo Ann Fuson Staples might tell you, she is no ordinary woman. She has led a remarkable life, full of adventure, love, hardship, and survival. Raised in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky, she comes from a long line of strong mountain folk, those ready to take on ad- versity and fight for anyone they love, no matter the odds. Although the pain from those experiences followed Jo Ann for the rest of her life, the bonds she made with her friends and family members only grew stronger, and from there, Jo Ann dove head-first into life.

D uring the year before Matt passed, he tried to teach me about our personal accounts. I refused to learn, thinking it might jinx his health. I refused to enter- tain any thoughts that he will be leaving me soon. Then the day came and I fell to pieces. I couldn't eat or sleep, my life changed. It was so hard to start all over. I never left the house for months. I couldn't even go outside in the sun. I cried out to God for help to get up, fight and get back my life. Then all kind of signs came to me. This book will help you restore back your life at your pace with your Holy Spirit. Everyone has their own story. This book is giving you a blueprint of how I walked each step after a devastating event of loss to God's victory to start living again. I was born in Hawaii into

a family with a father that fought during the World War II. It was after the Pearl Harbor attack. He was in the military in the 442 Regimental Combat Team. He was my first mod- el to learn how to fight my emotions. I am not a professional writer, but I know I am a child of God. Matt persuaded me to go back to college. He told me, I needed to value myself with confidence in my life. He promised to take care of me in every way. My English teacher told me, I had a flair in writing and I should look into that. I forgot about that until after Matt passed away and he was always my most promis- ing subject. This is my first book, but with God's assistance and the love for people who are loss, I will move forward.

CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

by Bruce D. Charsky

T his book covers the topic of end times. The purpose of this book is to detail out the chronological order of events described in the book of Revelation from the Bible. I believe the Bible is the holy and inspired word of God and that the book of Revelation gives us insight into the events both leading up to and including the end times. The book of Revelation also covers the topic of eternity and how our decisions about Jesus determine our eternal desti- nation. This book takes the reader through the entire book of Revelation with many other biblical references to support and provide additional information and put the material into the appropriate context for the reader. The main section of the book reveals the order of events in an outline format

showing the biblical reference for the reader to follow along in his or her own Bible. I have also included maps and a two-page timeline that shows the overall series of events. There may not be a more important topic in today's age than to know one's final destination and our decision for Jesus. People want to know about the end times and this book will provide the reader with an insight into the biblical order of events while explaining the impact to you, your family, your community and the globe as a whole. Dive into this book to find out all about those topics you have been wondering about such as the mark of the beast, the rapture, the seven year tribulation and ultimately, about eternity with or with- out Jesus.

When he overhears the sparrows the miners keep to detect deadly gasses in the mine talking about escape, he decides to help them. The saga of gold, love, and experiences of two American, Midwestern young brothers and their family during the turbulent years of the First World War.

I n the summer of 1914, brothers Henry and Joseph Morgan enjoyed carefree days on their family farm in North Dakota, where playful rivalries and youthful adventures filled their hours. Surrounded by the warmth of family life and the prom- ise of a new century, the brothers could not yet imagine how far the world beyond their fields would reach into their lives. The dawn of the twentieth century brought rapid progress—elec- tricity, automobiles, airplanes, and dreams of a brighter future. Yet, alongside these achievements, tensions in Europe erupted into what would become the First World War. Like millions of

others, the Morgan brothers were drawn into the conflict, their paths diverging in extraordinary ways as they left behind the innocence of farm life for the harsh realities of the battlefield. What follows is the saga of two young men whose lives were for- ever altered by war, their experiences preserved through letters, journals, and family lore. Their story is not only one of broth- erhood and sacrifice but also a reflection of a generation whose youth was shaped by love, loss, and the turbulent years of the Great War.
