BUSINESS BUILDING
Critical Activity 1: Build Your Contact List
Who’s on this list? If you’re stuck in the same routine day after day and always hanging out with the same crowd, it may be time to shake things up. Where can you go to meet new people? The most successful people continually get out of their comfort zone on purpose. They actively manage and expand their network. Whether they join gyms, run races, volunteer, or join other groups,
they always make a point of engaging with everyone, remembering names, and writing personal notes. Don’t forget that building a contact list is not a one-time event for new enrollees. A robust, expanding contact list is the first step to a robust, expanding business. Make it a goal to add one name to your contact list every single day. Given time, it may grow to several hundred, if not thousands, of names.
Your contact list is simply a list of everyone you know—family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, people you do business with, social media contacts, and more. This is a “living” document that evolves daily as you add new contacts, get in touch with them, and make notes for following up. “It’s a list of people whose lives you can change,” says Executive Director 9 Stacy Fiske. When you switch your mindset from “Who can I tell about Melaleuca?” to “Who deserves a chance to change their lives?” making your contact list becomes so much easier. DON’T PREJUDGE The most common mistake that business builders make is limiting their thinking when putting pen to paper. After all, it is human nature to prejudge. They think, “Who do I know who would be interested in Melaleuca?” The correct question is simply, “Who do I know?” When making your contact list, be sure you also include all of the people you “know of.” You may know of someone who wouldn’t recognize your name or who doesn’t know you. This could be a local real estate agent whose picture you see on signs around town or a teacher at your child’s school who teaches another grade. All of these are people you should consider adding to your list. EXPAND YOUR NETWORK In today’s fast-paced world, there are more and more opportunities to expand your network of contacts. As you go about your daily routine, think about the people you associate with. Consider where you are, where you were, and where you are going. Keep a running list of who comes to mind.
“Add at least one name to your contact list every single day. Don’t just stop with their name. You should write down as much information about that person as you can so you know how Melaleuca can help them and how you can approach them.”
