PATIENT SPOTLIGHT

Sylvia had back surgery exactly one year ago and her doctor sent her a list of physical therapy facilities she could go to, once she completed her recovery. Sylvia wanted a facility that understood pain and injury, and would be able to help her get back to living a life full of daily activities. After talking with a few of her friends about her surgery and the recovery process, she kept hearing the same answer: “Go to One to One Physical Therapy.” She decided to do a little research on us and came to the conclusion that it was time to go to One to One for therapy after six months post-op. She was still experiencing a good amount of pain from her back surgery, as well as pain from her hip and shoulder surgeries. So Sylvia was willing to give anything a chance when she came to us. During her time at our facility she has worked with many of our amazing therapists but one connection outweighed the rest. After she began working with Stacy, our PTA, the two formed a bond that helped Sylvia through her physical therapy treatment. She found that Stacy really understood that she was taking charge of her own body and expressed what “Sylvia has made remarkable progress in the last two months with us!”

9WaysToPreventFallsAtHome

This doesn’t have to involve a complete house remodel. You can make your home safe from falls with just a few basic changes. Senior care experts offer the following advice for preventing falls at home: 1. Clean up clutter. The easiest method for preventing falls is to keep your home neat. Remove all clutter, such as stacks of old newspapers and magazines, especially from hallways and staircases. 2. Repair or remove tripping hazards. Examine every room and hallway, looking for items such as loose carpet, slippery throw rugs, or wood floorboards that stick up. Then repair, remove, or replace those items for more effective fall prevention. 3. Install grab bars and handrails. These safety devices are crucial for going up and down stairs, getting on and off the toilet, and stepping in and out of the bathtub without injuring yourself. 4. Avoid wearing loose clothing. Opt for better-fitting and properly hemmed clothing that doesn’t bunch up or drag on the ground.

7. Make it nonslip. Bathtubs and showers, as well as floors in kitchens, bathrooms, and porches, can become extremely dangerous when wet.To prevent falls on slick surfaces, use nonslip mats. 8. Live on one level. Even with precautions like guardrails, stairs can present a significant falling hazard. Try to limit the trips you take up and down the stairs. 9. Move more carefully. Many people fall at home by moving too quickly from a sitting to a standing position and vice versa. Pause after going from lying down to sitting and from sitting to standing. Also take a pause before using the railing on stairs, whether going up or down.

5. Light it right. To create a home that’s more suitable for the elderly, install brighter light bulbs where needed, particularly in stairways and narrow hallways. 6. Wear shoes. Socks may be comfortable, but they present a slipping risk.

TipsForBetterHeartHealth DoWhat'sGoodFor TheHeart!

1. Aim for lucky number seven. Young and middle-age adults who slept 7 hours a night have less calcium in their arteries (an early sign of heart disease) than those who sleep 5 hours or less or those who sleep 9 hours or more. 2. Keep the pressure off. Get your blood pressure checked every 3-5 years if you’re 18-39. If you’re 40 or older, or if you have high blood pressure, check it every year. 3. Move more. To keep it simple, you can aim for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week of moderate exercise. Even if you exercise for 30 minutes a day, being sedentary for the other 23 1/2 hours is really bad for your heart. 4. Slash saturated fats. To help your heart’s arteries, cut down on saturated fats, which are mainly found in meat and full-fat dairy products. Choose leaner cuts and reduced-fat options. 5. Find out if you have diabetes. Millions of people don’t know that they have this condition. That’s risky because over time, high blood sugar damages arteries and makes heart disease more likely. We’ll solve the puzzle of your pain. This puzzle is for you!

6. Think beyond the scale. Ask your doctor if your weight is OK. If you have some pounds to lose, you’ll probably want to change your eating habits and be more active. 7. Ditch the cigarettes, real and electronic. Smoking and secondhand smoke are bad for your heart. If you smoke, quit, and don’t spend time around others who smoke as well. E-cigarettes are popular, but they’re not completely problem-free. They don’t contain the harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke but, they still do contain nicotine, so your goal should be to quit completely, not just switch to a less toxic version. 8. Clean up. Your heart works best when it runs on clean fuel. That means lots of whole, plant-based foods (like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds) and fewer refined or processed foods (like white bread, pasta, crackers, and cookies). 8 6 3 2 9 3 2 7 4 9 5 1 1 8 6 5 3 8 6 9 7 1 6 7 8 4 5 9 7 2 3 1 8 9 n° 19750 - Level Easy 7 2 8 5 3 7 5 4 1 8 3 2 4 5 3 7 1 3 4 2 4 1 9

A 30 Second Self-Test For Balance • Have you ever lost your footing while walking causing you to stagger? • When you go shopping, do you feel more secure holding onto a shopping cart? • Or have you ever gotten up in the middle of the night stumbling in the dark to the bathroom only to catch yourself from falling by grabbing the furniture?

30 Second Self-Test for Balance 1. Stand on a hard floor near a table or countertop for support. 2. Bend one knee and lift the foot–if you’re left- handed, stand on your left leg and lift the right foot; do the opposite if you’re right-handed. You don’t need to lift it high, just enough to keep it off the floor. 3. Now without holding onto anything slowly count the number of seconds you can hold that position without putting your foot back down. 4. Repeat the test 3 times, and then add up your total time and divide it by 3 to find your average balance time (for example, if test 1 was 4 seconds, test 2 was 8 seconds, and test 3 was 6 seconds, you’d add up 4, 8, and 6 to get 18. Divide by 3, and your average balance time is 6 seconds).

What it means: If you could not complete this test without being unsteady, you likely are at risk of falling.

Your next step is to see what is causing your loss of balance & unsteadiness and reserve your spot at our past patient only Balance & Dizziness Workshop.
