philosophy through some of my business friends later in life, and it hit home for me as much as it did for millions of others. As I started focusing my business toward working with other business owners, I was introduced to the Ziglar family at a small-business conference. Now, I’ve been representing the family for about six years. When I heard of Zig’s legacy while growing up, I never imagined that I would one day get to be in a position to help protect it, much less be his lawyer. To start, I connected with Zig Ziglar’s son, Tom. I like working with positive people, and you don’t get more positive than Tom and the rest of the Ziglar family. Right away, Tom and I hit it off. I called my dad right after meeting him because I was so excited. Riding in the same car as Tom Ziglar was surreal. I heard Zig’s wisdom and words coming through his son. Tom is constantly creating, and everything he develops with his dad’s legacy is to help individuals and small-business owners improve their position in life. Last year, I completed Ziglar’s legacy certification training so I can teach their methods. It’s been rewarding to not just serve as their lawyer but to also be part of carrying on Zig’s legacy. Ziglar reaches tens of millions of people a year. His emphasis on self-improvement tied to service is a Ziglar hallmark. If you purposefully invest in yourself, you can make a difference for others. People want instant success, but you have to work on yourself first. You have to improve and become what you want to be, and then you can have the things you want. Through Zig’s family, his message continues to reach people. It’s been an honor and quite a lot of fun to represent Zig’s legacy. The Ziglars are truly good people. Something that’s become clear to me working with the Ziglar family is the importance of relationships in business. In our practice, we don’t just have clients; we have friends. Everything we do is relationship-based, so we get to know our clients on a deep and personal level. Zig was right: You can have everything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want. – Scott

IT’S ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS HOW I GOT TO KNOW AND WORK WITH THE ZIGLAR FAMILY

F ew names are more synonymous with positivity and motivation than Zig Ziglar. When I was a kid, my father, who was a salesperson, went to conferences and came back extolling Ziglar’s name. Dad always had Ziglar’s tapes around the house, and I would often hear his words of wisdom. Almost everyone is familiar with Zig’s lessons. Through the ‘80s and ‘90s, Zig was the No. 1 sales and motivational speaker, and he inspired millions of people to live the lives they want and find success. I was reintroduced to his

RECOGNITION, FLEXIBILITY, AND PURPOSE

3 TIPS FOR ATTRACTING MILLENNIAL EMPLOYEES

DITCH THE 9-TO-5 STANDARD Offering more flexible work hours is a start, but if you really want to attract millennials, then your entire work environment should embrace modernity. Have the latest tech and tools for day-to-day operations, offer frequent opportunities for promotions and raises, avoid micromanagement, and give your young employees room to learn and grow. CREATE A SENSE OF PURPOSE More than anything, millennials are looking for some level of personal fulfillment — not just a paycheck. Create a brand story and work culture that expresses a greater purpose for prospective employees to get behind. Set high standards for the culture you want to create and maintain those standards. If you do this right, the talent you’re looking for will come to you. Just because millennials want more flexible work schedules and individual recognition doesn’t mean they aren’t willing to work hard. In fact, the opposite is true. By adapting your company culture to suit their lifestyle preferences, you can make sure your younger employees take an interest in your business and stick around. before. I have to be the best I've ever been. Maybe someone in the audience will take my message home, try it, and get a different result. Maybe that’ll be the spark that gets them going.” Secondly, Zig had been given some insight about the company’s goals from the vice president of sales. Zig did some research and felt that by weaving in some of these components, at least one person in the room would know he took the time to make it personal. Maybe it would inspire them to search out the truth, apply it, and take their life in a new direction. persistency and consistency. Consistency is for the worthy objective you work toward every day, and persistency is how you level up that goal every day. For each speech Zig gave, he studied and prepared for at least three hours. It didn’t matter if it was a speech he’d given hundreds of times. Zig didn’t just practice the same material; he added new elements each time, making it applicable to his audience. His practices of persistency and consistency made him what he was, and they make the perfect formula for success. PERSISTENCY AND CONSISTENCY In this story, Zig illustrated his formula for success:

You might have heard people call millennials lazy, entitled, and afraid of long-term commitments, but that trend is starting to shift. Today, businesses can’t afford to write off millennials because they actually make up a major percentage of the workforce. According to the Pew Research Center, there were 56 million millennials either working or looking for work in 2017, making up 35%

of the labor force. When so much of the country’s available labor is part of one demographic, you must ask yourself this question: How do I get millennials to work for me? CATER TO THE INDIVIDUAL Millennials don’t want to be just another cog in the machine. They want to work somewhere that values their unique skills and lets them use those skills effectively. When seeking millennial talent for your company, highly specific job listings will attract exceptional employees. Once they’re on board, be sure to nurture their skill set. Give them a chance to grow with your company, and they’ll be sure to stick around.

A FORMULA FOR SUCCESS As I shared on the cover, I’ve been fortunate to help the Ziglar family preserve and further Zig Ziglar’s legacy. Today, Zig’s son, Tom, carries on his legacy through giving his own charismatic presentations. In a recent one, Tom shared a story that illustrated how Zig became the incredible businessman and person he was. THE ZIGLAR APPROACH

TAILORED TO THE AUDIENCE Tom’s story takes place during the last 20 years of Zig’s life, when father and son were flying to a speaking event together. Zig planned on presenting some of his classic sales and motivational topics, giving a speech he’d given many times before. As people settled into their seats, waiting for the plane to take off, Zig took a brief nap. As soon as the plane was in the air, though, Zig awoke and began reviewing his speech. Tom was confused. “Dad, what are you doing? You’ve given this speech a thousand times,” Tom said.

So Zig explained, “There are two reasons I’m doing it. First, there are people in that room who’ve never heard me speak

You have an attorney on retainer, but you hesitate to call them. When you do, you watch the clock as the minutes tick by, knowing it’s costing you an arm and a leg just to ask about that contract. “I’m sure it’ll be fine,” you think. “I’ll just sign it.” You aren’t even worried about securing your business against a lawsuit. “That won’t happen to me,” you think.

But then, isn’t that what everyone who’s been on the other end of a lawsuit thinks?

Traditionally, attorneys charge by the hour, and you watch as your money flies out of your pocket just to seek legal advice. This discourages people from calling their lawyer until they’re in real trouble. By then, it’s too late. The lawsuit is already underway, and your assets are already being handed out to everyone but your loved ones. That’s why Scott Reib does it differently. After seeing far too many businesses lose everything because they waited until it was too late to contact their attorney, Scott built a model that encourages engagement and interaction with his clients. costume parade, where men and women alike dress in old- fashioned garb and march through the streets in honor of Ludwig and Therese’s marriage. The rest you could say is history, or geschichte ! OKTOBERFEST IN … CANADA? While Oktoberfest in Munich traditionally starts on Sept. 22, Canadians celebrate during the week of Oct. 6–14. The twin cities Kitchener and Waterloo host the largest Oktoberfest outside of Munich, boasting more than 700,000 people in attendance each year. The event has a musical concert dubbed “Rocktober” and a dog parade known as “Dogtober.” Even though the Ontario area is becoming more and more popular, you can still enjoy Oktoberfest on a budget. You can find hotels in the area and surrounding cities for well under $100 per night. Not everyone can make their way to Munich or even Canada to celebrate the fantastical event, but most areas will have something going on. If you love German culture, do a little bit of digging, and you’re sure to find an Oktoberfest event near you!

With Oktoberfest right around the corner, you may start hearing some of these fun sayings: “I don’t give a Schnitzel,” “Keep calm and Prost on,” or “You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy beer.” But what exactly is Oktoberfest, and why do so many people celebrate it? Here are some fun facts about it.

ROYAL BEGINNINGS Oktoberfest is deeply rooted in Munich culture. It all started with the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on Oct. 12, 1810, and the citizens of Munich were invited to attend the celebration just outside the gates of the city. The celebration’s main attraction was horse racing, which was also a staple event for the next year but has since been removed from the current celebrations. In 1811, a large agricultural fair was mixed into the event, and in 1817, beer pubs and performers were added. Perhaps one of the most famous events during Oktoberfest is the
