I T WAS PURE CURIOSITY. A crowd was gathering. The word had been passed along that Jesus of Naz areth was coming. Zaccheus wasn’t especially interested, but he did want to see Jesus just to see what He looked like. (That is what the Bible says.) He was a small man so by one look at the crowd he knew there was no way to see Jesus but to climb the sycamore tree. That is where Jesus saw him as He walked up the road: just another curious, determined person up where he could get a good look. But Jesus understood how to use this man’s cu riosity to accomplish his conversion. He called out, “Zaccheus, come down quickly; I must come to your house.” What a surprising greeting for Zac cheus! Not only had his curiosity been satisfied, but also he found for giveness and new life in Christ. This was not just a strange com bination of circumstances, but a God-planned situation. Jesus used the man’s curiosity and the circum stances to bring him to repentance and discipleship. Once a man came to an evangelis tic service out of curiosity. Maybe the music, the personality of the evangelist attracted him or the large audience aroused his curiosity. Dur ing the invitation, someone spoke to him about becoming a Christian. The message had appealed to him and he responded to the invitation. A passerby stopped to listen to a Christian giving his testimony at a street meeting. He was about to move on when a worker spoke to him about becoming a Christian. He re sponded to the kind invitation and became a new creation in Christ. An alert, eager Christian may find a person’s curiosity an open door to his life. Paul wrote to Timothy, “ Preach the Word, be instant in sea son, out of season.” The Christian is urged to speak the word when it is convenient and when it is not. We, too, should use every opportunity, even simple curiosity, which Jesus used with Zaccheus. You, too, may have such an opportunity. Use it. It may result in the winning of a person to Christ. Curiosity! Yes, satisfy the curiosity with the Sav iour.
