The Society, which first started work in Spain about 130 years ago, resumed operations early in 1963 after its activities had been interrupted in 1956 through restric tions placed on it by the Govern ment. This year the Society is dis tributing about 2,000 complete Bibles and 4,000 New T e s tam en ts in Spanish. F.B.I. Head Says Communists Seek To Exploit American Youth J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, re ported recently that the Communist party was striving to exploit what it termed a “ drift toward the left” among the nation’s youth. In his year-end report to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, Mr. Hoover stat ed that the youth plan was approved by Gus Hall, general secretary of the Communist party. “ In October,” Mr. Hoover said, “ Communist party delegates met in Chicago, 111. to lay the groundwork for a new national youth organization aimed at exploita tion of what the party describes as a drift toward the left among young people.” Mr. Hoover said that Mr. Hall stipulated that the youth move ment “ should avoid the appearance of a Soviet-style organization, how ever, it should not tolerate anti- Soviet or anti-party thinking.” Aggressive Line Affirmed by Peking Communist Ch ina indicated in January that 1964 would see a con tinuation of its policies at home and abroad. According to an editorial in the Chinese Communist newspaper, Jenmin Jih Pao, Peking will pursue its goal o f a strong economy, will “actively support r e v o lu t io n a r y struggles of all oppressed peoples,” and will “ resolutely oppose the policy of war and aggression of imperial ism headed by the United States.” Jenmin Jih Pao asserted that the country’s 1963 economic plans were “ completely fulfilled and overful filled,” and that the economy had begun to show an “ overall turn for the better.”

Promise to Ban Vulgar Fun at New York . Fair Girlie shows and other tawdry spectacles will not be allowed in the 1964-65 New York’s Fair, Rover Moses promised recently in the ground breaking ceremonies for the Protes tant Center at the fair site in Flush ing Meadow Park. “While we shall have plenty of fun, entertainment and amusement at the fair,” he told a large gathering that included many church leaders, “ it will not be of the vulgar catchpenny variety which is supposed to be the main attraction at fairs and expositions. We can assure you that you will have no offensive neighbors.” College Teaching Called 'Debased' Dr. Marjorie Nicolson, outgoing president of the Modern Language Association, said recently that high er education in the United States was debased by a “ swarm” of stu dents. Dr. Nicolson, professor emeri tus of English at Columbia Univer sity, is a former dean of Smith Col lege. “ American education is suffer ing from dropsy, a morbid swell ing,” she told a meeting of the asso ciation. “ Junior colleges and what we used to call normal schools have b ecom e colleges,” she continued. “ State colleges, too, have swelled into universities, practically all these in stitutions authorized by one legisla ture or another to confer higher de grees.” State legislatures, Dr. Nicol son stated, should not be blamed for their “ innocent belief” that the mass production of Ph.D.’s was the chief essential in higher education. Ac creditation agencies, she said, set the quotas that had to be met. Edu cational leaders “ first weakly, then wearily,” capitulated and lowered standards for higher degrees “ as the demand for college teachers contin ued to swell to fantastic propor tions,” she declared.
