Coonhounds Coonhounds are a family of dog breeds consisting of hunting dogs bred to chase raccoons and other prey up trees like bears, foxes, possums, cougars, and bobcats. While their heritage is unclear, it is thought that Basque shepherds living in Australia brought them to America in the 19th century where it was bred to be the unique dog breed we know today.
