A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear Brunswick Community College Family,
and Business Incubator have provided entrepreneurs with invaluable resources, fostering economic growth and job creation in Brunswick County. Beyond academics, we have deepened our engagement with the community through impactful service projects such as hurricane relief efforts and poverty simulations. Our student-athletes have demonstrated excellence both on and off the field, with standout performances in baseball, basketball, and softball, reinforcing the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. None of these achievements would have been possible without the unwavering support of our donors, partners, faculty, staff, and students. The generosity of our community, including a historic $500,000 gift from Alan Holden and over $4.3 million in planned giving commitments, is a powerful affirmation of the value and trust placed in BCC’s mission. As we look ahead, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing exceptional education, fostering innovation, and creating pathways to success for all who walk through our doors. Together, we will continue to build a brighter future for our students, our community, and beyond.
As we reflect on the remarkable journey of 2024, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the incredible strides we have made together at Brunswick Community College. This year has been one of unprecedented growth, innovation, and impact, strengthening our commitment to excellence in education, workforce development, and community engagement. Each participant was given a new identity reflecting varied
circumstances of those experiencing homelessness in the community. One of these participants, Nduwimana Maherhero, a student in BCC’s Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program, took on the role of a 16-year-old pregnant teenager responsible for her 10-year-old brother. Reflecting on the experience, Maherhero shared, “It’s easy to make assumptions about people’s situations from the outside. But taking on this role really opened my eyes to how alone it can feel.
It’s an experience that’s going to make me a better nurse because now I understand how these situations can happen and how hard it can be to turn things around.” “I felt the frustration of navigating a system that’s supposed to help but isn’t always accessible,” Rebecca Walters, a BCC instructor, portrayed a 21-year-old single mother with a 1-year-old child. She struggled to access the resources her character desperately needed. “I felt the frustration of navigating a system that’s supposed to help but isn’t always accessible,” Walters explained. Other BCC participants included students Janna Plummer and Nick Campana, as well as instructor Tammy Parrella, who joined in the overnight simulation, sleeping in makeshift shelters with only donated bagged lunches for food. This powerful simulation revealed the complexities surrounding homelessness and poverty, reinforcing Brunswick Community College’s commitment to fostering empathy and understanding among students and faculty. By stepping into the shoes of those in need for just one night, BCC’s participants walked away with a deeper sense of empathy, a commitment to removing biases, and a renewed determination to advocate for their community’s most vulnerable members.

Donor Appreciation Event Hosts Over 300 Attendants
The Foundation of Brunswick Community College (BCC), joined by more than 300 participants, shined the spotlight on its donors at the 2023 Donor Appreciation Luncheon on October 6. Foundation and BCC Leadership thanked and applauded donors for making college a reality for hundreds of students annually. This fall alone, donor support resulted in more than $240,000 in scholarships to 208 students. “We began this semester with record enrollment numbers, largely due to your efforts to expand access to a college education,” said BCC President Gene Smith. “Every dollar and hour that you give makes a difference.
Thank you for realizing that and for choosing to invest in BCC. As we look ahead, we’re excited about plans for what’s next including new programs, services, and state- of-the-art facilities, all laser-focused on student success. Thank you for making this possible, being here today, and your continued support.” Sponsored by Dinah E. Gore and held at the Dinah E. Gore Sports & Aquatics Complex, the event featured a welcome from Foundation Executive Director Teresa Nelson and remarks from BCC Board of Trustees Chair Alan Holden, BCC President Gene Smith, and Foundation Board of Directors President Teresa Carroll. Attendees also heard from Student Ambassadors, Ava Hinson, Kaylin Mills, and Cam Williams, who thanked donors for believing in the students of BCC. “You have contributed to the life of our college and supported students in countless ways,” said Nelson. “Your gifts have provided tuition scholarships, stocked our food pantries, and grown our emergency fund, helping students overcome unexpected obstacles and get them back on track. You also served as mentors, attended and cheered for students at college events, volunteered for committees, shared kind words of support, and so much more. Today and every day, we thank and appreciate you.”
